    Variability in spawning frequency and reproductive development of the narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) along the west coast of Australia

    The narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) is widespread throughout the Indo-West Pacific region. This study describes the reproductive biology of S. commerson along the west coast of Australia, where it is targeted for food consumption and sports fishing. Development of testes occurred at a smaller body size than for ovaries, and more than 90% of males were sexually mature by the minimum legal length of 900 mm TL compared to 50% of females. Females dominated overall catches although sex ratios within daily catches vary considerably and females were rarely caught when spaw n ing. Scomberomorus commerson are seasonally abundant in coastal waters and most of the commercial catch is taken prior to the reproductive season. Spawning occurs between about August and November in the Kimberley region and between October and January in the Pilbara region. No spawning activity was recorded in the more southerly West Coast region, and only in the north Kimberley region were large numbers of fish with spawning gonads collected. Catches dropped to a minimum when spawning began in the Pilbara region, when fish became less abundant in inshore waters and inclement weather conditions limited fishing on still productive offshore reefs. Final maturation and ovulation of oocytes took place within a 24-hour period, and females spawned in the afternoon-evening every three days. A third of these spawning females released batches of eggs on consecutive days. Relationships between length, weight, and batch fecundity are presented

    Age validation, growth, mortality, and additional population parameters of the goldband snapper (Pristipomoides multidens) off the Kimberley coast of northwestern Australia

    Goldband snapper (Pristipomoides multidens) collected from commercial trap and line fishermen off the Kimberley coast of northwestern Australia were aged by examination of sectioned otoliths (sagittae).A total of 3833 P. multidens, 80–701 mm fork length (98–805 mm total length), were examined from commercial catches from 1995 to 1999. The oldest fish was estimated to be age 30+ years. Validation of age estimates was achieved with marginal increment analysis. The opaque and translucent zones were each formed once per year and are considered valid annual growth increments (the translucent zone was formed once per year between January and May). A strong link between water temperature and translucent zone formation was evident in P. multidens. The von Bertalanffy growth function was used to describe growth from length-at-age data derived from sectioned otoliths

    Extended Photometry for the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey: A Testbed for Photometric Redshift Experiments

    This paper describes a new catalog that supplements the existing DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey photometric and spectroscopic catalogs with ugriz photometry from two other surveys; the Canada-France-Hawaii Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Each catalog is cross-matched by position on the sky in order to assign ugriz photometry to objects in the DEEP2 catalogs. We have recalibrated the CFHTLS photometry where it overlaps DEEP2 in order to provide a more uniform dataset. We have also used this improved photometry to predict DEEP2 BRI photometry in regions where only poorer measurements were available previously. In addition, we have included improved astrometry tied to SDSS rather than USNO-A2.0 for all DEEP2 objects. In total this catalog contains ~27,000 objects with full ugriz photometry as well as robust spectroscopic redshift measurements, 64% of which have r > 23. By combining the secure and accurate redshifts of the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey with ugriz photometry, we have created a catalog that can be used as an excellent testbed for future photo-z studies, including tests of algorithms for surveys such as LSST and DES.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures and 5 tables.     Biological characteristics and mortality of western butterfish (Pentapodus vitta), an abundant bycatch species of prawn trawling and recreational fishing in a large subtropical embayment

    The western butterfish (Pentapodus vitta) is numerous in the bycatch of prawn trawling and recreational fishing in Shark Bay, Western Australia. We have thus determined crucial aspects of its biological characteristics and the potential impact of fishing on its abundance within this large subtropical marine embayment. Although both sexes attained a maximum age of 8 years, males grow more rapidly and to a larger size. Maturity is attained at the end of the first year of life and spawning occurs between October and January. The use of a Bayesian approach to combine independent estimates for total mortality, Z, and natural mortality, M, yielded slightly higher point estimates for Z than M. This result indicates that P. vitta is lightly impacted by fishing. It is relevant that, potentially, the individuals can spawn twice before recruitment into the fishery and that 73% of recreationally caught individuals are returned live to the water

    1D convolutional neural networks for detecting nystagmus

    Vertigo is a type of dizziness characterised by the subjective feeling of movement despite being stationary. One in four individuals in the community experience symptoms of dizziness at any given time, and it can be challenging for clinicians to diagnose the underlying cause. When dizziness is the result of a malfunction in the inner-ear, the eyes flicker and this is called nystagmus. In this article we describe the first use of Deep Neural Network architectures applied to detecting nystagmus. The data used in these experiments was gathered during a clinical investigation of a novel medical device for recording head and eye movements. We describe methods for training networks using very limited amounts of training data, with an average of 11 mins of nystagmus across four subjects, and less than 24 hours of data in total, per subject. Our methods work by replicating and modifying existing samples to generate new data. In a cross-fold validation experiment, we achieve an average F1 score of 0.59 (SD = 0.24) across all four folds, showing that the methods employed are capable of identifying periods of nystagmus with a modest degree of accuracy. Notably, we were also able to identify periods of pathological nystagmus produced by a patient during an acute attack of Ménière's Disease, despite training the network on nystagmus that was induced by different means

    An investigation into the diagnostic accuracy, reliability, acceptability and safety of a novel device for Continuous Ambulatory Vestibular Assessment (CAVA)

    Dizziness is a common condition that is responsible for a significant degree of material morbidity and burden on health services. It is usually episodic and short-lived, so when a patient presents to their clinician, examination is normal. The CAVA (Continuous Ambulatory Vestibular Assessment) device has been developed to provide continuous monitoring of eye-movements, allowing insight into the physiological parameters present during a dizziness attack. This article describes the first clinical investigation into the medical and technical aspects of this new diagnostic system. Seventeen healthy subjects wore the device near continuously for up to thirty days, artificially inducing nystagmus on eight occasions. 405 days’ worth of data was captured, comprising around four billion data points. A computer algorithm developed to detect nystagmus demonstrated a sensitivity of 99.1% (95% CI: 95.13% to 99.98%) and a specificity of 98.6% (95% CI: 96.54% to 99.63%). Eighty-two percent of participants wore the device for a minimum of eighty percent of each day. Adverse events were self-limiting and mostly the consequence of skin stripping from the daily replacement of the electrodes. The device was shown to operate effectively as an ambulatory monitor, allowing the reliable detection of artificially induced nystagmus

    A meta-analysis of metal biosorption by suspended bacteria from three phyla

    Biosorption of heavy metals by bacterial biomass has been the subject of significant research interest in last decades due to its efficiency, relatively low cost and minimal negative effects for the surrounding environment. In this meta-analysis, the biosorption efficiencies of different bacterial strains for Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Cr(III), Mn(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) were evaluated. Optimum conditions for the biosorption process such as initial metal concentration, temperature, pH, contact time, metal type, biomass dosage and bacterial phyla, were evaluated for each heavy metal. According to the results, the efficiencies of bacterial biomass for removal of heavy metal were as follows: Cd(II) > Cr(III) > Pb(II) > Zn(II) > Cu(II) > Ni(II) > Mn(II). Firmicute phyla showed the highest overall (living and dead) biosorption efficiency for heavy metals. Living biomass of Proteobacteria had the best biosorption performance. Living bacterial biomass was significantly more efficient in biosorption of Cu(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) than dead biomass. The maximum biosorption efficiency of bacterial strains for Cd(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) was achieved at pH values between 6 and 7.5. High temperatures (>35 °C) reduced the removal efficiencies for Cu(II) and Zn(II) and increased the efficiencies for Cd(II) and Cr(III) ions. The maximum biosorption efficiency of non-essential heavy metals occurred with short contact times (24 h). The mean biosorption capacity of bacterial biomass was between 71.26 and 125.88 mg g−1. No publication bias existed according to Egger’s and Begg’s test results

    Nystagmus during an acute Ménière's attack: From prodrome to recovery

    OBJECTIVE: We are currently undertaking a clinical investigation to evaluate the diagnostic capability of a system for detecting periods of pathological dizziness. This article presents an analysis of the data captured during an acute attack of Ménière's disease. DESIGN: The Continuous Ambulatory Vestibular Assessment (CAVA) device is worn by patients in the community, and continuously records eye and head movement data (vestibular telemetry). STUDY SAMPLE: A 53-year-old lady with a fifteen-year history of left-sided unilateral Ménière's disease. RESULTS: The patient wore the device nearly continuously for thirty days. The data revealed a three-hour long attack of vertigo consisting of four separate phases of nystagmus. The duration, beat-direction and slow phase velocity of the nystagmus evolved through time. The first phase contained isolated nystagmus beats which preceded the patient's record of the vertigo attack onset but coincided with anticipation of an impending vertigo attack. CONCLUSIONS: CAVA provides a unique insight into the physiological parameters present during episodes of dizziness. Here, it has provided the first full example of an acute Ménière's attack, including a period of prodrome. These findings have implications for the prediction of vertigo attack onset, for the diagnosis of Ménière's disease and other diseases resulting in dizziness
