Enumeration and characterization of arsenic-tolerant diazotrophic bacteria in a long-term heavy-metal-contaminated soil
The abundance of arsenic-tolerant diazotrophic
bacteria was compared in a long-term contaminated
soil versus a non-contaminated one. In addition, the
characterization of tolerant diazotrophic bacteria was
carried out. Differences in the number of heterotrophic
N2 fixers were found between soils. Contaminated soil
showed a decrease in the microbial population size of
about 80%, confirming the great sensitivity of this
group of soil bacteria to metals. However, quantitative
analysis of the response to increased doses of arsenic
reveals that the proportion of the culturable diazotrophic
community tolerant to arsenic was identical for both
soils (contaminated and non-contaminated). Twentytwo
arsenic-tolerant diazotrophic isolates were obtained
and further characterized. 16S ribosomal DNA sequence
analysis revealed that these bacterial isolates
were distributed among four taxons (Actinobacteria,
Firmicutes, γ-Proteobacteria, and β-Proteobacteria).
Most genera recovered from the contaminated soil were
also found in the uncontaminated soi
Niche partitioning and coexistence of two spiders of the genus peucetia (araneae, oxyopidae) inhabiting trichogoniopsis adenantha plants (asterales, asteraceae)
Niche theory suggests that the coexistence of ecologically similar species in the same site requires some form of resource partitioning that reduces or avoids interspecific competition. Here, from July 2013 to December 2015, we investigated spatial niche differentiation at three different scales of two sympatric congeneric spiders, Peucetia rubrolineata and P. flava, along an altitudinal gradient in shaded and open areas in an Atlantic forest in Serra do Japi, SP, Brazil. These spiders are peculiar in that they present an exclusive association with the plant Trichogoniopsis adenantha (Asteraceae). In theory, the coexistence of two Peucetia species could be explained by: (1) microhabitat segregation with individuals from different species occupying different parts of the same plants; (2) mesohabitat segregation with different species using plant in different environments; (3) macrohabitat segregation, where different species would not co-occur along the altitudinal gradient. With respect to micro-habitat use, in both species, different instars used different plant parts, while the same instars of both species used the same type of substrate. However, the two Peucetia species segregated by meso-habitat type, with P. rubrolineata preferring T. adenantha plants in shaded areas and P. flava preferring those in open areas. Our results support the hypothesis of niche partitioning begetting diversity, and highlight the importance of analyzing habitat use at multiple scales to understand mechanisms related to coexistence1410CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQCOORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DE PESSOAL DE NÍVEL SUPERIOR - CAPESFUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESPnão temnão temnão te

Síndrome De Transfusão Feto-fetal: Neurodesenvolvimento De Lactentes Tratados Com Cirurgia A Laser
To assess the neurodevelopmental functions of survivors of twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) treated by fetoscopic laser coagulation (FLC), during the first year of life, comparing them to a control group; and to verify the influence of specific variables on neurodevelopment. Method: This was a prospective, longitudinal study. The sample comprised 33 monochorionic diamniotic twins who underwent FLC for treatment of TTTS and 22 full-term infants of single-fetus pregnancies. Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development Screening Test were used for evaluation. Prenatal, perinatal and postnatal information were obtained. Results: There was an increased frequency of infants in the TTTS group with inadequate performance compared to the control group. The identified variables (fetal donor, low economic income and cardiorespiratory disease) negatively impacted expressive communication and fine motor skills. Conclusion: Although through follow-up is recommended in all TTTS survivors, particular attention is required for the high-risk group as defined in this study. © 2016, Associacao Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria. Symplectic Quantization of Open Strings and Noncommutativity in Branes
We show how to translate boundary conditions into constraints in the
symplectic quantization method by an appropriate choice of generalized
variables. This way the symplectic quantization of an open string attached to a
brane in the presence of an antisymmetric background field reproduces the non
commutativity of the brane coordinates.Comment: We included a comparison with previous results obtained from Dirac
quantization, emphasizing the fact that in the symplectic case the boundary
conditions, that lead to the non commutativity, show up from the direct
application of the standard method. Version to appear in Phys. Rev.
COLCHICINE: INTOXICATION AND DEATH, CASE REPORT
Abstract
B. I., sixty-seven years old, was taken to a hospital with abdominal cramps, vomiting and intense
diarrhoea; he died four hours after being admitted in the emergency ward. After some medical
investigation, it became known that the patient had started a treatment with colchicine in capsules
prepared by a pharmacist. The capsules and the autopsy materials were analysed by High
Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and the analytical results for the capsules were positive
for colchicine with mean concentration of 63,48mg/capsule; the analytical results for the autopsy
materials were negative for colchicine. The fatal colchicine intoxication was confirmed by the
anatomo-pathological exams carried out in the autopsy materials, by the sintomatology presented
by the patient during his staying in the hospital and by the high concentration of colchicine found in
the still remaining capsules

A Comment on the Topological Phase for Anti-Particles in a Lorentz-violating environment
Recently, a scheme to analyse topological phases in Quantum Mechanics by
means of the non-relativistic limit of fermions non-minimally coupled to a
Lorentz-breaking background has been proposed. In this letter, we show that the
fixed background, responsible for the Lorentz-symmetry violation, may induce
opposite Aharonov-Casher phases for a particle and its corresponding
antiparticle. We then argue that such a difference may be used to investigate
the asymmetry for particle/anti-particle as well as to propose bounds on the
associated Lorentz-symmetry violating parameters.Comment: 4 pages - A published versio
A quantum-like description of the planetary systems
The Titius-Bode law for planetary distances is reviewed. A model describing
the basic features of this rule in the "quantum-like" language of a wave
equation is proposed. Some considerations about the 't Hooft idea on the
quantum behaviour of deterministic systems with dissipation are discussed.Comment: LaTex file, 17 pages, no figures. Version published in Foundations of
