Peculiar Velocities and the Mean Density Parameter
We study the peculiar velocity field inferred from the Mark III spirals using
a new method of analysis. We estimate optimal values of Tully-Fisher scatter
and zero-point offset, and we derive the 3-dimensional rms peculiar velocity
() of the galaxies in the samples analysed. We check our statistical
analysis using mock catalogs derived from numerical simulations of CDM models
considering measurement uncertainties and sampling variations. Our best
determination for the observations is . We use the
linear theory relation between , the density parameter , and
the galaxy correlation function to infer the quantity where is the linear bias parameter
of optical galaxies and the uncertainties correspond to bootstrap resampling
and an estimated cosmic variance added in quadrature. Our findings are
consistent with the results of cluster abundances and redshift space distortion
of the two-point correlation function. These statistical measurements suggest a
low value of the density parameter if optical galaxies are

Separating the Good from the Great: Predicting Votes for the Cy Young Award
Speculating about which pitcher will win the Cy Young Award has long been a pastime of baseball fans. In this paper, we identify which metrics affect a pitcher’s chances of winning the Cy Young Award, and the marginal effect of each metric. Our results were found using an ordinary least squares regression with a data set containing all pitchers in the American league who received at least one vote for the Cy Young award between 1970 - 2009. Our results show that voters favor pitchers with a high number of wins and a strong strikeout rate. Starting pitchers are also heavily favored over relieving pitchers
Life science payloads planning study
Preferred approaches and procedures were defined for integrating the space shuttle life sciences payload from experiment solicitation through final data dissemination at mission completion. The payloads operations plan was refined and expended to include current information. The NASA-JSC facility accommodations were assessed, and modifications recommended to improve payload processing capability. Standard format worksheets were developed to permit rapid location of experiment requirements and a Spacelab mission handbook was developed to assist potential life sciences investigators at academic, industrial, health research, and NASA centers. Practical, cost effective methods were determined for accommodating various categories of live specimens during all mission phases
Lanthanide Ionization Energies and the Sub-Shell Break. Part 2. The Third and Fourth Ionization Energies
By interpolating a 4fq6s → 4fq7s transition within the sequence f1 → f14 rather than between f0 and f14, revised third and fourth ionization energies of the lanthanides have been obtained. The revised values, together with the second ionization energies calculated in a previous paper, are used to calculate values of the standard enthalpies of formation of the gaseous tripositive ions, ΔfHƟ(M3+,g), and of the lattice and hydration enthalpies of some lanthanide compounds and ions in the trivalent and tetravalent states. The displacements of f0 values from nearly smooth f1 → f14 variations exceed 30 kJ mol-1 and indicate substantial subshell breaks
Valencies of the lanthanides
The valencies of the lanthanides vary more than was once thought. In addition to valencies associated with a half-full shell, there are valencies associated with a quarter- and three-quarter-full shell. This can be explained on the basis of Slater’s theory of many-electron atoms. The same theory explains the variation in complexing constants in the trivalent state (the “tetrad effect”).
