    Belief in karma is associated with perceived (but not actual) trustworthiness

    Believers of karma believe in ethical causation where good and bad outcomes can be traced to past moral and immoral acts. Karmic belief may have important interpersonal consequences. We investigated whether American Christians expect more trustworthiness from (and are more likely to trust) interaction partners who believe in karma. We conducted an incentivized study of the trust game where interaction partners had different beliefs in karma and God. Participants expected more trustworthiness from (and were more likely to trust) karma believers. Expectations did not match actual behavior: karmic belief was not associated with actual trustworthiness. These findings suggest that people may use others’ karmic belief as a cue to predict their trustworthiness but would err when doing so

    Novel Genetic Variants for Cartilage Thickness and Hip Osteoarthritis

    Osteoarthritis is one of the most frequent and disabling diseases of the elderly. Only few genetic variants have been identified for osteoarthritis, which is partly due to large phenotype heterogeneity. To reduce heterogeneity, we here examined cartilage thickness, one of the structural components of joint health. We conducted a genome-wide association study of minimal joint space width (mJSW), a proxy for cartilage thickness, in a discovery set of 13,013 participants from five different cohorts and replication in 8,227 individuals from seven independent cohorts. We identified five genome-wide significant (GWS, P≤5·0×10−8) SNPs annotated to four distinct loci. In addition, we found two additional loci that were significantly replicated, but results of combined meta-analysis fell just below the genome wide significance threshold.     Rare SLC13A1 variants associate with intervertebral disc disorder highlighting role of sulfate in disc pathology

Here we report a genome-wide association study of back pain using diagnoses assigned in clinical practice; dorsalgia (119,100 cases, 909,847 controls) and intervertebral disc disorder (IDD) (58,854 cases, 922,958 controls). We identify 41 variants at 33 loci. The most significant association (ORIDD = 0.92, P = 1.6 × 10−39; ORdorsalgia = 0.92, P = 7.2 × 10−15) is with a 3’UTR variant (rs1871452-T) in CHST3, encoding a sulfotransferase enzyme expressed in intervertebral discs. The largest effects on IDD are conferred by rare (MAF = 0.07 − 0.32%) loss-of-function (LoF) variants in SLC13A1, encoding a sodium-sulfate co-transporter (LoF burden OR = 1.44, P = 3.1 × 10−11); variants that also associate with reduced serum sulfate.     The use of antibiotic-loaded bone cement and systemic antibiotic prophylactic use in 2,971,357 primary total knee arthroplasties from 2010 to 2020: an international register-based observational study among countries in Africa, Europe, North America, and Oceania

    Background and purpose - Antibiotic-loaded bone cement (ALBC) and systemic antibiotic prophylaxis (SAP) have been used to reduce periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) rates. We investigated the use of ALBC and SAP in primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA).Patients and methods - This observational study is based on 2,971,357 primary TKAs reported in 2010-2020 to national/regional joint arthroplasty registries in Australia, Den-mark, Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Romania, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA. Aggregate-level data on trends and types of bone cement, antibiotic agents, and doses and duration of SAP used was extracted from participating registries.Results - ALBC was used in 77% of the TKAs with variation ranging from 100% in Norway to 31% in the USA. Palacos R+G was the most common (62%) ALBC type used. The primary antibiotic used in ALBC was gentamicin (94%). Use of ALBC in combination with SAP was common prac-tice (77%). Cefazolin was the most common (32%) SAP agent. The doses and duration of SAP used varied from one single preoperative dosage as standard practice in Bolzano, Italy (98%) to 1-day 4 doses in Norway (83% of the 40,709 TKAs reported to the Norwegian arthroplasty register). Conclusion - The proportion of ALBC usage in pri-mary TKA varies internationally, with gentamicin being the most common antibiotic. ALBC in combination with SAP was common practice, with cefazolin the most common SAP agent.     Using multivariable Mendelian randomization to estimate the causal effect of bone mineral density on osteoarthritis risk, independently of body mass index

    Objectives Observational analyses suggest that high bone mineral density (BMD) is a risk factor for osteoarthritis (OA); it is unclear whether this represents a causal effect or shared aetiology and whether these relationships are body mass index (BMI)-independent. We performed bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) to uncover the causal pathways between BMD, BMI and OA. Methods One-sample (1S)MR estimates were generated by two-stage least-squares regression. Unweighted allele scores instrumented each exposure. Two-sample (2S)MR estimates were generated using inverse-variance weighted random-effects meta-analysis. Multivariable MR (MVMR), including BMD and BMI instruments in the same model, determined the BMI-independent causal pathway from BMD to OA. Latent causal variable (LCV) analysis, using weight-adjusted femoral neck (FN)–BMD and hip/knee OA summary statistics, determined whether genetic correlation explained the causal effect of BMD on OA. Results 1SMR provided strong evidence for a causal effect of BMD estimated from heel ultrasound (eBMD) on hip and knee OA {odds ratio [OR]hip = 1.28 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.05, 1.57], p = 0.02, ORknee = 1.40 [95% CI = 1.20, 1.63], p = 3 × 10–5, OR per standard deviation [SD] increase}. 2SMR effect sizes were consistent in direction. Results suggested that the causal pathways between eBMD and OA were bidirectional (βhip = 1.10 [95% CI = 0.36, 1.84], p = 0.003, βknee = 4.16 [95% CI = 2.74, 5.57], p = 8 × 10–9, β = SD increase per doubling in risk). MVMR identified a BMI-independent causal pathway between eBMD and hip/knee OA. LCV suggested that genetic correlation (i.e. shared genetic aetiology) did not fully explain the causal effects of BMD on hip/knee OA. Conclusions These results provide evidence for a BMI-independent causal effect of eBMD on OA. Despite evidence of bidirectional effects, the effect of BMD on OA did not appear to be fully explained by shared genetic aetiology, suggesting a direct action of bone on joint deterioration

    The aim of the present study was to develop strategies for systematising the monitoring of processes and operations with the use of simple methods and for detecting weak points that are in need of closer examination. Such strategies are a valuable aid to plant managers, enabling them to set priorities more quickly when dealing with weak points in the operation of the plant. The experiments were carried out and evaluated by the Niersverband (=Niers Association) in Viersen. The Niersverband operates 24 sewage plants and 18 pumping stations within the catchment area of the Niers, which extends from Greater Moenchengladbach to Goch. The results presented in chapters 7 to 10 are based on data from some of these plants and on data processing concepts developed by NiersverbandInsgesamt ist das Ziel der Untersuchung die Entwicklung von Strategien, die sowohl die Prozess- und Betriebsueberwachung anhand einfacher Methoden systematisieren als auch Schwachstellen aufzeigen sollen, die eingehenderer Bearbeitung beduerfen. Vor allem fuer die Betriebsleiter, die mehrere Anlagen gleichzeitig betreuen, ist damit eine Arbeitserleichterung verbunden, die es erlaubt, schneller Prioritaeten fuer die Bearbeitung von betrieblichen Schwachstellen zu setzen. Die Untersuchungen und Auswertungen zu dieser Arbeit wurden beim Niersverband in Viersen durchgefuehrt. Der Niersverband mit Sitz in Viersen betreibt 24 Klaeranlagen und 18 Pumpwerke im ca. 1500 km"2 grossen Einzugsgebiet der Niers, das sich vom Grossraum Moenchengladbach bis Goch erstreckt. Die Daten eines Teils dieser Anlagen und die beim Verband realisierten Konzepte zur Datenverarbeitung bilden die Grundlagen fuer die in Kapitel 7 - 10 dargestellten Ergebnisse.     Postoperative anemia after joint replacement surgery is not related to quality of life during the first two weeks postoperatively

    BACKGROUND Lower limb joint replacement surgery provides a considerable improvement in quality of life (QoL), but is associated with peroperative blood loss and with anemia in the direct postoperative period. General acceptance of low transfusion thresholds and shorter postoperative hospital stays will result in patients leaving hospital with low hemoglobin (Hb) levels. To evaluate the role of QoL scores as a possible alternative for Hb values to serve as a further indicator for red blood cell transfusion, we performed a secondary analysis of a previously conducted randomized clinical trial to compare QoL and fatigue scores with simultaneously measured pre- and postoperative Hb levels, in total hip and knee arthroplasty patients. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS QoL measurement was measured preoperatively and twice up to 14 days postoperatively using the Functional Status Index (FSI), the Visual Analogue Score (VAS)-Fatigue score, and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy Anemia (FACT-Anemia) subscale. Pearson correlation coefficients between (change in) FSI, VAS-Fatigue, and FACT-Anemia subscale scores and (change in) Hb levels were calculated. Additionally, partial correlations were calculated and linear regression analysis was performed, correcting for possible confounding variables. RESULTS A total of 603 patients were evaluated. All patients scored worse postoperatively, but none of the scores correlated with Hb values, neither after correcting for confounding factors. Even more, the changes between preoperative and postoperative Hb levels were not correlated with changes in fatigue scores. CONCLUSION In hip and knee prosthesis surgery no correlation existed between postoperative Hb levels or acute postoperative decline in Hb values and QoL scores (FSI, VAS-Fatigue, or FACT-Anemia).Study of the normal and pathological locomotory systemMedical Decision MakingAnalysis and support of clinical decision makin
