Constructive updating/downdating of oblique projectors: a generalization of the Gram-Schmidt process
A generalization of the Gram-Schmidt procedure is achieved by providing
equations for updating and downdating oblique projectors. The work is motivated
by the problem of adaptive signal representation outside the orthogonal basis
setting. The proposed techniques are shown to be relevant to the problem of
discriminating signals produced by different phenomena when the order of the

Measurements design and phenomena discrimination
The construction of measurements suitable for discriminating signal
components produced by phenomena of different types is considered. The required
measurements should be capable of cancelling out those signal components which
are to be ignored when focusing on a phenomenon of interest. Under the
hypothesis that the subspaces hosting the signal components produced by each
phenomenon are complementary, their discrimination is accomplished by
measurements giving rise to the appropriate oblique projector operator. The
subspace onto which the operator should project is selected by nonlinear
techniques in line with adaptive pursuit strategies

Constructive approximations to the q=1/2 maximum entropy distribution from redundant and noisy data
An approach adopted to consider the problem of constructing the q=1/2 maximum entropy distribution from redundant and noisy data was discussed. The advantage of this generalized approach, when dealing with very noisy data was illustrated by a numerical simulation. A strategy was proposed that evolved through different steps such as independent constraints were first preselected by recourse to a data independent technique. A backward approach was also proposed for reducing the parameters of such distributions. It was found that the sub-optimal strategies could be utilized in a broad range of situations
On the truncation of the harmonic oscillator wavepacket
We present an interesting result regarding the implication of truncating the
wavepacket of the harmonic oscillator. We show that disregarding the
non-significant tails of a function which is the superposition of
eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator has a remarkable consequence: namely,
there exist infinitely many different superpositions giving rise to the same
function on the interval. Uniqueness, in the case of a wavepacket, is restored
by a postulate of quantum mechanics
Cross-coupled doa trackers
A new robust, low complexity algorithm for multiuser tracking is proposed, modifying the two-stage parallel architecture of the estimate-maximize (EM) algorithm. The algorithm copes with spatially colored noise, large differences in source powers, multipath, and crossing trajectories. Recursive approach for constructing the q = 1/2 maximum entropy distribution from redundant data
A recursive approach for computing the q = 1/2 nonextensive maximum entropy distribution of the previously introduced formalism for data subset selection is proposed. Such an approach is based on an iterative biorthogonalization technique, which allows for the incorporation of the Lagrange multipliers that determine the distribution to the workings of the algorithm devised for selecting relevant data subsets. This technique circumvents the necessity of inverting operators and yields a recursive procedure to appropriately modify the Lagrange multipliers so as to account for each new constraint
Intrinsically disordered inhibitor of glutamine synthetase is a functional protein with random-coil-like pKa values
The sequential action of glutamine synthetase (GS) and glutamate synthase (GOGAT) in cyanobacteria allows the incorporation of ammonium into carbon skeletons. In the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, the activity of GS is modulated by the interaction with proteins, which include a 65-residue-long intrinsically disordered protein (IDP), the inactivating factor IF7. This interaction is regulated by the presence of charged residues in both IF7 and GS. To understand how charged amino acids can affect the binding of an IDP with its target and to provide clues on electrostatic interactions in disordered states of proteins, we measured the pKa values of all IF7 acidic groups (Glu32, Glu36, Glu38, Asp40, Asp58, and Ser65, the backbone C-terminus) at 100 mM NaCl concentration, by using NMR spectroscopy. We also obtained solution structures of IF7 through molecular dynamics simulation, validated them on the basis of previous experiments, and used them to obtain theoretical estimates of the pKa values. Titration values for the two Asp and three Glu residues of IF7 were similar to those reported for random-coil models, suggesting the lack of electrostatic interactions around these residues. Furthermore, our results suggest the presence of helical structure at the N-terminus of the protein and of conformational changes at acidic pH values.
