    Franz Joseph Haydn\u27s writing for wind instruments and the evolution of the military band and orchestral wind section

    The compositional career of Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) spans a crucial period in Western musical history. Haydn\u27s early compositions show the influence of the late Baroque, while his late symphonies and Masses can be heard as early examples of musical Romanticism. At this same time, the development of new wind instruments within European military bands heavily influenced the establishment of the symphony orchestra, as instruments initially deemed inappropriate for indoor performance became accepted as core members of the ensemble. Haydn\u27s critical role in the growth of the symphony has long been acknowledged, but the increasing sophistication of his wind writing over the course of his work, and the importance of this development to his overall symphonic style, is often overlooked. Viewed in its historical context, Haydn\u27s career can be seen as a microcosm of the evolution of symphonic music over the course of the late 1700s and early 1800s, particularly in regard to the role of wind instruments in that evolution

    Engaging Students in the Margins: A Mixed-Methods Case Study Exploring Student and Instructor Response to Feedback in the First-Year Writing Classroom.

    Providing feedback is one of the most time-consuming aspects of writing instruction. However, its effects are not well understood. Though divergences between instructors’ goals and commenting practices and variations in students’ responses are well documented, instructor and student perspectives are underrepresented in the existing literature, leaving it unclear why such divergences and variations occur. Furthermore, the terms used to describe feedback are generally left undefined and untheorized. This dissertation introduces a definition of feedback for the writing classroom and theorizes the role that feedback plays in this context. Using findings from a series of interviews and a corpus analysis of instructors’ written comments and students’ revision plans and revisions, this study explores how nine students with low levels of self-efficacy and motivation and two instructors of required first-year writing described their experiences with feedback and considers how they responded to the feedback they received. This mixed-methods study theorizes feedback as a continuous cycle of communication, interpretation, and negotiation through which instructors and students develop understandings of one another’s feedback. Students’ responses function as feedback because they directly inform the subsequent decisions instructors make when commenting on their writing. This study also foregrounds the role that instructors’ and students’ goals and beliefs play in the feedback cycle. These goals and beliefs offer one explanation for the divergences and variations noted. For instance, tensions became apparent in the goals and beliefs that the instructors articulated, making it difficult for them to realize some goals in their written comments, even when they aligned with those frequently recommended by composition scholars. Additionally, students’ responses more closely corresponded with their goals and beliefs than with their instructor’s goals or commenting practices, suggesting that instead of supporting students’ purposes for writing, as scholars recommend, instructors should help students set writing-focused goals. Together, these findings demonstrate a need to reconsider the best practices for commenting on student writing, both in terms of what instructors can accomplish in written comments and what can best support students’ development as writers.PhDEnglish and EducationUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     The role of phospholipase A in gallstone formation

    Gallbladder bile of patients with gallstones having acute or chronic cholecystitis were examined for phospholipase A activity. None of the specimens tested showed any sign of this enzyme.     The social relations model for count data : an exploration of intergenerational co-activity within families

    The social relations model (SRM) is typically used to identify sources of variance in interpersonal dispositions in families. Traditionally, it uses dyadic measurements that are obtained from a round-robin design, where each family member rates each other family member. Those dyadic measurements are mostly considered to be continuous, but we, however, wilt discuss how the SRM can be adapted to count dyadic measurements. Such SRM for count data can be formulated in the SEM-framework by viewing it as a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), but it can also be defined in the multilevel framework. These two frameworks result in equivalent models of which the parameters can be estimated using maximum likelihood estimation or a Bayesian approach. We perform a simulation study to compare the performance of those two estimators. As an illustration, we consider intergenerational co-activity data from a block design and contrast family dynamics between non-divorced families and stepfamilies

    Angry responses to infant challenges: parent, marital, and child genetic factors associated with harsh parenting

    This study examined genetic and environmental influences on harsh parenting of 9-month-olds. We examined whether positive child-, parent-, and family-level characteristics were associated with harsh parenting in addition to negative characteristics. We were particularly interested in examining evocative gene-environment correlation (rGE) by testing the effect of birth parent temperament on adoptive parents’ harsh parenting. Additionally, we examined associations among adoptive parents’ own temperaments, their marital relationship quality, and harsh parenting. Adoptive fathers’ (but not adoptive mothers’) harsh parenting was inversely related to an index of birth mother positive temperament (reward dependence), indicating evocative rGE. Higher marital quality was associated with less harsh parenting, but only for adoptive fathers. Adoptive parents’ negative temperamental characteristics (harm avoidance) were related to hostile parenting. Findings suggest the importance of enhancing positive family characteristics in addition to mitigating negative characteristics, as well as engaging multiple levels of the family system to prevent harsh parenting. Children have the potential to evoke strong positive and negative affective responses from parents, which then influence and organize caregiving behavior (Dix, 1991). All young children demonstrate challenging behaviors, such as prolonged crying that may be difficult to soothe, uncooperativeness with bathing or dressing, or difficulty with eating or sleeping. The degree to which parental negative emotion is evoked by these challenges and expressed in interactions with children is often characterized as harsh or overreactive parenting. Harsh parenting is a function of a complex interplay of risk and protective factors that operate at multiple levels of the family system (i.e., characteristics of the parent, child, and family environment; Belsky, 1984; Boivin et al., 2005; DiLalla & Bishop, 1996; Neiderhiser et al., 2004, 2007; Towers, Spotts, & Neiderhiser, 2002). The long-term maladaptive developmental outcomes associated with harsh, negative parenting during infancy (Bayer, Ukoumunne, Mathers, Wake, Abdi, & Hiscock, 2012; Bradley & Corwyn, 2008; Lorber & Egeland, 2009) underscore the need for improved understanding of risk and protective factors associated with early harsh parenting. The current study aims to extend on the research on harsh parenting in infancy in two ways. First, although risk factors for early harsh parenting are well documented, we know little about factors that buffer parents from harsh parenting during infancy; this study examines independent and differential effects of positive and negative characteristics on harsh parenting. Second, although interest in child effects on parenting, including harsh parenting, has been present in the field for decades (Bell, 1979; Bell & Chapman, 1986; Rutter et al., 1997) we know very little about the degree to which the effects found in the literature truly reflect evocative effects of infants’ genetically influenced characteristics. The current study used an adoption design to test the hypothesis that genetically influenced temperamental characteristics of 9-month-olds would influence adoptive parents’ harsh parenting. Previous research has identified many correlates of harsh parenting, including negative characteristics of the parent (e.g., maternal depression; Lovejoy, Graczyk, O’Hare, & Neuman, 2000), family (e.g., marital hostility, Rhoades et al., 2011), and child (e.g., difficult temperament, Plomin, Loehlin & DeFries, 1985; poor regulation, Bridgett et al., 2009). Previous research has identified risk factors for harsh parenting, but very little is known about how positive parent, child, and family characteristics might mitigate it. For example, a positive marital relationship could buffer the impact of high levels of depressive symptoms on parenting, and thus have implications for prevention and intervention efforts. The current study examined positive and negative parent, child, and family factors in association with harsh parenting. A second emphasis centered on understanding the role of infants’ genetically influenced characteristics on harsh parenting. Much of the previous work on child effects on parenting has examined child temperament. In general, child positivity is related to positive parenting, while child negativity is related to negative parenting (Putnam, Sanson, & Rothbart, 2002; Wilson & Durbin, 2012). However, the general lack of genetically sensitive designs in this research makes it impossible to determine whether these associations exist because (1) harsh parenting leads to negative child characteristics, (2) specific child characteristics evoke harsh parenting (evocative gene-environment correlation, rGE; Plomin, Loehlin & DeFries, 1977; Scarr & McCartney, 1983) or (3) children and parents share genes that contribute to both parenting and temperament (passive gene-environment correlation). Therefore, genetically-sensitive research designs are needed to disentangle these influences to understand specific mechanisms underlying relations between child characteristics and parent behavior

    Passive \u3cem\u3er\u3c/em\u3eGE or Developmental Gene-Environment Cascade? An Investigation of the Role of Xenobiotic Metabolism Genes in the Association Between Smoke Exposure During Pregnancy and Child Birth Weight

    There is considerable evidence that smoke exposure during pregnancy (SDP) environmentally influences birth weight after controlling for genetic influences and maternal characteristics. However, maternal smoking during pregnancy—the behavior that leads to smoke exposure during pregnancy—is also genetically-influenced, indicating the potential role of passive gene-environment correlation. An alternative to passive gene-SDP correlation is a cascading effect whereby maternal and child genetic influences are causally linked to prenatal exposures, which then have an ‘environmental’ effect on the development of the child’s biology and behavior. We describe and demonstrate a conceptual framework for disentangling passive rGE from this cascading GE effect using a systems-based polygenic scoring approach comprised of genes shown to be important in the xenobiotic (substances foreign to the body) metabolism pathway. Data were drawn from 5044 families from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children with information on maternal SDP, birth weight, and genetic polymorphisms in the xenobiotic pathway. Within a k-fold cross-validation approach (k = 5), we created weighted maternal and child polygenic scores using 18 polymorphisms from 10 genes that have been implicated in the xenobiotic metabolism pathway. Mothers and children shared variation in xenobiotic metabolism genes. Amongst mothers who smoked during pregnancy, neither maternal nor child xenobiotic metabolism polygenic scores were associated with a higher likelihood of smoke exposure during pregnancy, or the severity of smoke exposure during pregnancy (and therefore, neither proposed mechanism was supported), or with child birth weight. SDP was consistently associated with lower child birth weight controlling for the polygenic scores, maternal educational attainment, social class, psychiatric problems, and age. Limitations of the study design and the potential of the framework using other designs are discussed

    Additive drug-specific and sex-specific risks associated with co-use of marijuana and tobacco during pregnancy: Evidence from 3 recent developmental cohorts (2003-2015).

    BACKGROUND: Methodologic challenges related to the concomitant use (co-use) of substances and changes in policy and potency of marijuana contribute to ongoing uncertainty about risks to fetal neurodevelopment associated with prenatal marijuana use. In this study, we examined two biomarkers of fetal neurodevelopmental risk-birth weight and length of gestation-associated with prenatal marijuana use, independent of tobacco (TOB), alcohol (ALC), other drug use (OTH), and socioeconomic risk (SES), in a pooled sample (N = 1191) derived from 3 recent developmental cohorts (2003-2015) with state-of-the-art substance use measures. We examined differential associations by infant sex, and multiplicative effects associated with co-use of MJ and TOB. METHODS: Participants were mother-infant dyads with complete data on all study variables derived from Growing Up Healthy (n = 251), Behavior and Mood in Babies and Mothers (Cohorts 1 and 2; n = 315), and the Early Growth and Development Study (N = 625). We estimated direct effects on birth weight and length of gestation associated with MJ, TOB, and co-use (MJ x TOB), using linear regression analysis in the full sample, and in male (n = 654) and female (n = 537) infants, separately. RESULTS: Mean birth weight and length of gestation were 3277 g (SD = 543) and 37.8 weeks (SD = 2.0), respectively. Rates of prenatal use were as follows: any use, n = 748 (62.8%); MJ use, n = 273 (22.9%); TOB use, n = 608 (51.0%); co-use of MJ and TOB, n = 230 (19.3%); ALC use, n = 464 (39.0%); and OTH use n = 115 (9.7%.) For all infants, unique effects on birth weight were observed for any MJ use [B(SE) = -84.367(38.271), 95% C.I. -159.453 to -9.281, p = .028], any TOB use [B(SE) = -0.99.416(34.418), 95% C.I. -166.942 to -31.889, p = .004], and each cigarette/day in mean TOB use [B(SE) = -12.233(3.427), 95% C.I. -18.995 to -5.510, p \u3c .001]. Additional effects of co-use on birth weight, beyond these drug-specific effects, were not supported. In analyses stratified by sex, while TOB use was associated with lower birth weight in both sexes, MJ use during pregnancy was associated with lower birth weight of male infants [B(SE) = -153.1 (54.20); 95% C.I. -259.5 to -46.7, p = .005], but not female infants [B(SE) = 8.3(53.1), 95% C.I. -96.024 to 112.551, p = .876]. TOB, MJ, and their co-use were not associated with length of gestation. CONCLUSIONS: In this sample, intrauterine co-exposure to MJ and TOB was associated with an estimated 18% reduction in birth weight not attributable to earlier delivery, exposure to ALC or OTH drugs, nor to maternal SES. We found evidence for greater susceptibility of male fetuses to any prenatal MJ exposure. Examination of dose-dependence in relationships found in this study, using continuous measures of exposure, is an important next step. Finally, we underscore the need to consider (a) the potential moderating influence of fetal sex on exposure-related neurodevelopmental risks; and (b) the importance of quantifying expressions of risk through subtle alterations, rather than dichotomous outcomes

    The observed association between maternal anxiety and adolescent asthma : children of twin design suggest familial effects

    BACKGROUND: Previous studies indicate that maternal anxiety is associated with asthma in the adolescent child, but mechanisms are unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between maternal anxiety and maternal, self- and register-based report of asthma in the adolescent child, and whether the association remains after control of familial confounding (shared environmental and genetic factors). METHOD: From the Twin and Offspring Study of Sweden, 1691 mothers (1058 twins) and their adolescent child were included. The association between maternal self-reported anxiety (Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP) somatic or psychic anxiety) and asthma based on subjective (maternal or child report) or objective (register-based diagnosis and medication) measures were analysed using logistic regression. The children-of-twins design was used to explore whether genes or environment contribute to the association. RESULTS: Maternal BAI anxiety (OR 2.02, CI 1.15-3.55) was significantly associated with adolescent asthma reported by the mother. Maternal KSP somatic anxiety (OR 1.74, CI 1.04-2.91) and psychic anxiety (OR 1.74, CI 1.05-2.86) was significantly associated with breathlessness reported by the adolescent child. In contrast, maternal anxiety was not associated with increased risk for the register-based outcomes of asthma diagnosis or medication. The results remained also after adjusting for covariates and the children-of-twins analyses which indicate that the association was due to familial confounding. CONCLUSIONS: We found some associations between maternal anxiety and subjectively reported offspring asthma or breathlessness which may be due to familial effects. A likely candidate for explaining this familial confounding is heritable personality traits associated with both anxiety and subjective measures of asthma.NonePublishe
