    Stratigraphy And Geochemistry Of Neoproterozoic Iron Formation, South Australia

    In the southern portion of the Adelaide geosyncline, the Neoproterozoic Yudnamutana Subgroup unconformably overlies older Neoproterozoic sedimentary rocks of the Adelaidean succession. The Braemar and Holowilena iron formations occur locally in the glacigenic Yudnamutana Subgroup at the transitional contact between the basal Pualco Tillite and overlying Benda Siltstone formations, or stratigraphic equivalents elsewhere.;Magnetite and/or hematite and absence of chert typify these iron formations which are associated with diamictite, subarkosic wacke, siltstone and minor carbonate. Diamictites are typically unstratified and have iron-poor ({dollar}{dollar}30 wt.% Fe{dollar}\sb2{dollar}O{dollar}\sb3{dollar}) matrices. The former commonly occur below the iron formation-bearing intervals whereas the latter are intercalated with them. Low Fe{dollar}\sb2{dollar}O{dollar}\sb3{dollar} diamictites are typified by plutonic and/or extra-basinal clasts and are considered to represent glacimarine deposition from iceberg melt-out during waning glacial conditions. The high Fe{dollar}\sb2{dollar}O{dollar}\sb3{dollar} diamictites locally exhibit evidence of ice grounding (glacial striae) and typically contain intraformational clasts incorporated by sediment gravity processes. Subarkosic Fe wackes and Fe siltstones generally contain 5-20% iron oxide minerals. Sharp-based, coarse-tail graded beds of subarkosic Fe wacke formed due to rapid deposition from high-concentration turbidity currents, whereas intervals of unstratified, ungraded and structureless subarkosic Fe wacke are considered to reflect deposition from density-modified grain flows.;Iron formation exhibits similar major, trace and rare earth element distributions to recent submarine hydrothermal deposits. The chemical composition of associated clastic rocks suggests that iron formation represents deposition of chemically precipitated iron oxides during periods of lessened clastic input. The iron-rich fluids probably emanated from extensional, fault-controlled conduits related to rifting during evolution of the Adelaide geosyncline

    My Head Was Like a Washing Machine on Spin : (Improving) Women’s Experiences of Accessing Support

    This paper draws on data collected as part of two larger studies to set out the differences, according to women seeking support, between the feminist responses of the specialist women’s sector and the issues-led responses of other agencies. The first study examined the processes by which women enter, endure, and exit relationships with abusive men. The second study explored the barriers to help-seeking for those accessing a service for women involved in prostitution. Taking a feminist poststructuralist approach, the authors point to the gendered nature, both of the experiences that propel women toward help-seeking and of the responses they receive from agencies. They note the current socio-economic context within which those experiences and responses are set and the importance, for women, of the specialist women’s sector. Data were collected via narrative-style interviews with twenty-five women with lived experience of the issues being explored. Many women noted that, when initially seeking support from agencies, they had either been offered no service or inappropriate services. They spoke of being required to engage with multiple services, constantly retelling their stories, and the competing and conflicting demands made of them by professionals. These accounts were contrasted with the service they received from the specialist women’s sector. The findings are presented in terms of their meaning for and impact upon women accessing professional support. The implications for practice are discussed: the case for professionals’ proactive sourcing/using information about women’s services operating in their locality; the importance of effective communication, both within and between agencies; and the shared benefits of working alongside the specialist women’s sector

    Implementation of a Journal Prototype for Pregnant and Parenting Adolescents

    Teenage pregnancy and childbearing remain pressing public health issues that have garnered attention from public health officials and social services agencies. This paper reports on the initial implementation and formative evaluation of a journaling program used as a means of communicating health information to pregnant and parenting adolescents (young women age 15-19) while also providing participants with a means of self-expression. The journaling prototype was implemented in a community-based agency in the Midwest by Family Support Specialists (FSSs) who made home visits on a monthly basis to assist pregnant and parenting adolescents (n = 52) with successful family planning and public health education. A mixed method approach of qualitative (analysis of journals, field notes, and responses of semi-structured interviews with FSSs) and quantitative (questionnaires from pregnant and parenting adolescent respondents) data with purposive sampling was employed to evaluate the implementation of the journaling intervention. Twenty of the 52 study participants were pregnant when the journaling intervention was implemented, while 32 were not pregnant, but recently had a child and were currently parenting. Two core themes emerged from analysis of the data after the implementation of the journals: (1) usefulness of the journal and responsiveness to participants' information needs and (2) functionality challenges. The results offer practical starting points to tailor the implementation of journaling in other contexts. Further, areas for improvement emerged regarding the distribution timeline for the journal and the content of the journal itself. As such, we discuss the lessons learned through this collaborative project and suggest opportunities for future phases of the journal intervention

    The Importance of Peer Influence for LGBTQ+ Youth in Rural Communities Aaron Kemmerer supported by findings from Safe as Yourself (SAY) Project Traci Wike (PI), Leah Bouchard, Maurico Yabar, and Aaron Kemmerer Objectives: To explore the experiences and narratives of LGBTQ+ youth in rural North Carolina. To elaborate on the influence of peer support and impact of peer victimization for LGBTQ+ youth in rural North Carolina. Methods: Data was collected from eleven young people who were interviewed from 2019-2020 at an LGBTQ+ youth center in rural North Carolina. The interviews were coded and analyzed using narrative analysis on a team of interraters; the team consisted of four members from VCU School of Social Work: the principle investigator, two doctoral research assistants, and an MSW research assistant. Results: Analysis of the interviews, though still in process, so far highlights the impact of the dual impact of participants’ peers --- simultaneously pointing to LGBTQ+ youth experiences with both peer victimization (as a risk factor) and peer support (as a resilience factor). Conclusions: Peer support is vital for LGBTQ+ youth in rural communities and may help offset the negative impact of peer victimization.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/gradposters/1059/thumbnail.jp

    Molybdenum Disulphide Surfaces to Reduce Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa Biofilm Formation.

    The reduction of bacteria and biofilm formation is important when designing surfaces for use in industry. Molybdenum disulphide surfaces (MoS2SUR) were produced using MoS2 particle (MoS2PAR) sizes of 90 nm 2 ”m and 6 ”m containing MoS2PAR concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%. These were tested to determine the efficacy of the MoS2SUR to impede bacterial retention and biofilm formation of two different types of bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The MoS2SUR were characterised using Fourier Transform InfraRed Spectroscopy, Ion Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Optical Profilometry and Water Contact Angles. The MoS2SUR made with the smaller 90 nm MoS2PAR sizes demonstrated smaller topographical shaped features. As the size of the incorporated MoS2PAR increased, the MoS2SUR demonstrated wider surface features, and they were less wettable. The increase in MoS2PAR concentration within the MoS2SUR groups did not affect the surface topography but did increase wettability. However, the increase in MoS2PAR size increased both the surface topography and wettability. The MoS2SUR with the smaller topographical shaped features, influenced the retention of the S. aureus bacteria. Increased MoS2SUR topography and wettability resulted in the greatest reduction in bacterial retention and the bacteria became more heterogeneously dispersed and less clustered across the surfaces. The surfaces that exhibited decreased bacterial retention (largest particle sizes, largest features, greatest roughness, most wettable) resulted in decreased biofilm formation. Cytotoxicity testing of the surface using cell viability demonstrated that the MoS2SUR were not toxic against HK-2 cells at MoS2PAR sizes of 90 nm and 2 ”m. This work demonstrated that individual surfaces variables (MoS2SUR topographic shape and roughness, MoS2PAR size and concentration) decreased bacterial loading on the surfaces, which then decreased biofilm formation. By optimising MoS2SUR properties, it was possible to impede bacterial retention and subsequent biofilm formation

    Dynamical System Modeling of Immune Reconstitution after Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation Identifies Patients at Risk for Adverse Outcomes

    AbstractSystems that evolve over time and follow mathematical laws as they evolve are called dynamical systems. Lymphocyte recovery and clinical outcomes in 41 allograft recipients conditioned using antithymocyte globulin (ATG) and 4.5-Gy total body irradiation were studied to determine if immune reconstitution could be described as a dynamical system. Survival, relapse, and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) were not significantly different in 2 cohorts of patients receiving different doses of ATG. However, donor-derived CD3+ cell reconstitution was superior in the lower ATG dose cohort, and there were fewer instances of donor lymphocyte infusion (DLI). Lymphoid recovery was plotted in each individual over time and demonstrated 1 of 3 sigmoid growth patterns: Pattern A (n = 15) had rapid growth with high lymphocyte counts, pattern B (n = 14) had slower growth with intermediate recovery, and pattern C (n = 10) had poor lymphocyte reconstitution. There was a significant association between lymphocyte recovery patterns and both the rate of change of donor-derived CD3+ at day 30 after stem cell transplantation (SCT) and clinical outcomes. GVHD was observed more frequently with pattern A, relapse and DLI more so with pattern C, with a consequent survival advantage in patients with patterns A and B. We conclude that evaluating immune reconstitution after SCT as a dynamical system may differentiate patients at risk of adverse outcomes and allow early intervention to modulate that risk

    Community-powered urban stream restoration: A vision for sustainable and resilient urban ecosystems

    Urban streams can provide amenities to people living in cities, but those benefits are reduced when streams become degraded, potentially even causing harm (disease, toxic compounds, etc.). Governments and institutions invest resources to improve the values and services provided by urban streams; however, the conception, development, and implementation of such projects may not include meaningful involvement of community members and other stakeholders. Consequently, project objectives may be misaligned with community desires and needs, and projects may fail to achieve their goals. In February 2020, the 5(th) Symposium on Urbanization and Stream Ecology, an interdisciplinary meeting held every 3 to 5 y, met in Austin, Texas, USA, to explore new approaches to urban stream projects, including ways to maximize the full range of potential benefits by better integrating community members into project identification and decision making. The symposium included in-depth discussion about 4 nearby field case studies, participation of multidisciplinary urban stream experts from 5 continents, and input from the Austin community. Institutional barriers to community inclusion were identified and analyzed using real-world examples, both from the case studies and from the literature, which clarified disparities in power, equity, and values. Outcomes of the symposium have been aggregated into a vision that challenges the present institutional approach to urban stream management and a set of strategies to systematically address these barriers to improve restoration solutions. Integrating community members and other stakeholders throughout the urban restoration process, and a transparent decision-making process to resolve divergent objectives, can help identify appropriate goals for realizing both the ecological and social benefits of stream restoration
