This paper describes the general concepts of Arnold Berleant's urban metaphors (garden city, forest city, asphalt jungle, wilderness) in order to use them as a background for presenting a different perspective on the aesthetics of engagement through the prism of contemporary dance strategies and design practices in architecture and urban planning.

Cultural transfer in Swedish exile: The Bonnier family's stake in the Bermann-Fischer publishing house

After the death in 1934 of his father-in-law Samuel Fischer, founder of the well-known publishing house S. Fischer in Berlin, Gottfried Bermann Fischer moved to Vienna with the aim of publishing the works of prominent German-speaking Jewish and non-Jewish authors who could no longer publish in National Socialist Germany. After the ‘Anschluss’ to Nazi Germany in March 1938 he fled to Sweden with help from Karl Otto and Tor Bonnier, heads of Albert Bonniers Förlag. Eagerly observed by the Nazi authorities, Gottfried Bermann Fischer published books of well-known German, Austrian, and Swedish writers. What did this German-language publishing work look like in a foreign-language environment? Who were the employees? Where were the sales markets? Why did this cooperation between Bermann Fischer and Bonnier fail in the end? The main focus of this article is on Bermann Fischer’s efforts on behalf of German-speaking authors outside Nazi Germany, and on the resentments against a (foreign) Jewish entrepreneur and Bonniers’ engagement in this last remaining large German publishing house in exile after May 1940, even after Gottfried Bermann Fischer’s expulsion from Sweden

Extending the Environmental Focus to Supply Chains. ISO 14001 as an Inter-Organizational Tool?

    Get PDF
In the wake of preventive thinking, attention has turned towards a life cycle perspective of products. Businesses can no longer ignore the environmental impacts of the products outside the borders of their own facilities. Consequently companies are now extending their environmental considerations beyond their internal production to include the environmental performance of their suppliers and supply chains. At the same time, many companies are implementing environmental management systems, certified according to the international standard ISO 14001. Therefore, the question arises, could the structure of an EMS, as outlined in the ISO 14001 be used as an inter-organizational tool for setting, communicating, and monitoring the environmental requirements in the supply chain. This thesis considers this question and presents the results from recent literature, and practical experiences. It goes on to analyze and discuss the possibilities and potential problems connected to this extended use of the standard. The results establish the importance of building trust and close relationships between the cooperating companies. Trust relates also to credibility of the ISO 14001 and its certification audit. The research suggests better use of the companies’ internal capabilities stemming from implementation of ISO 14001 in order to overcome some of the problems

Frazeologiczne innowacje wymieniające w powieściach Solaris i Dzienniki gwiazdowe Stanisława Lema

The article attempts to analyze the phraseological innovations that introduce partial replacement of phrases in the novel Solaris and a collection of short stories Dzienniki gwiazdowe [Memoirs of a Space Traveller]. The innovations, being the result of a replacement of a component with another one which seems to the creator of a text more appropriate, attractive, or simply more fit to the text, have been classified in relation to their approach towards the context and situational conditioning. Semantic relations between the replaced and the replacing component and their influence upon the change in the meaning of a phaseologism are considered. The basic assumption is to investigate the function replacing innovations perform in science fiction literature. The functional criterion has been adopted as a basis for establishing the usefulness of an innovation. This criterion makes it possible to evaluate whether a given innovation is semantically and stylistically correct, whether it is appropriately attuned to the context, whether its meaning renders the communicative intentions of the writer, and, finally, whether it satisfies the assigned stylistic and stylization functions

Students as partners in learning and teaching:The benefits of co-creation of the curriculum

    Get PDF
This research explores the benefits of co-creation of the curriculum, which is seen as one form of student-staff partnership in learning and teaching in which each partner has a voice and a stake in curriculum development. This qualitative research analyses participants’ perceptions of co-creation of the curriculum in the Scottish higher-education sector. Initial findings show that some staff and students participating in co-creation of the curriculum perceive it to benefit them by (a) fostering the development of shared responsibility, respect, and trust; (b) creating the conditions for partners to learn from each other within a collaborative learning community; and (c) enhancing individuals’ satisfaction and personal development within higher education. Using Barnett’s conceptualisation of supercomplexity and Baxter Magolda’s three-pronged view of self-authorship, the author suggests that critical and democratic engagement in co-creation of the curriculum can develop the self-authorship of both students and staff members, including their cognitive, interpersonal, and intrapersonal abilities which help them adapt to an ever-changing, supercomplex world.</jats:p

Open badges to encourage class representatives’ reflection and achievement-sharing:A case study from Edinburgh University Students’ Association (EUSA)

    Get PDF
This case study describes how Edinburgh University Students Association (EUSA) worked in partnership with the University of Edinburghs Information Services division to implement one of the first Open Badge schemes used in the UK higher education sector. Based on student feedback, EUSA developed an effective Open Badge model to recognise and reward students work as Class Representatives. The paper describes EUSAs model of badges, badge criteria and implementation, before focusing on qualitative examples of the positive impact of this pilot project for both individual students and for the Students Association. It provides examples of how students reflected thoughtfully about the impact of their work as Class Representatives to develop skills in negotiation, problem solving, diplomacy, leadership, and change management. EUSAs Open Badge scheme now rewards students for sharing their achievements. In turn, students Open Badge blog posts have helped EUSA to gain more meaningful insights into the broad work of Class Representatives and how students benefit when they engage fully with the role

Co-creation of the curriculum:Challenging the status quo to embed partnership

    Get PDF
Many individuals in the higher education sector claim that co-creation of the curriculum is an innovative process of student engagement in which students and staff members become partners in curriculum development. This research analyses rare instances of co-creation of the curriculum in the Scottish higher education sector to understand individuals different conceptualisations of this collaborative teaching and learning practice. The researcher interviewed ten academic members of staff and ten students who participated in co-creation of the curriculum in Scotland to analyse their perspectives of the benefits as well as the challenges of this form of active student engagement. Staff and students participating in co-creation of the curriculum encounter such challenges as staff and students taking on different responsibilities, increased time and effort involved and institutional inertia as they challenge the status quo. This paper will explore how individuals have overcome these challenges to embed partnership and achieve strong benefits of co-creation of the curriculum, including shared ownership and the engagement of both students and staff in the learning community and their increased satisfaction and professional development resulting from working in partnership

    Balance platform system dynamic properties

Lately mechanical vibrations problematic interesting increasing is observed, not only in the aspect of its harmfulness for human but also in the direction of its positive influence on human organism. During tests determining vibrations influence on human organism it was observed, that beside negative influence of vibration with frequencies close to the human intestines free vibrations frequencies there is also observed improvement of parameters in connection to muscular weakening especially in organs responsible for holding of proper posture. In case of balance platforms which are controlled vibration platforms there are used vibrations with low-frequency character (about 1Hz) where proper vibration control helps holding of correct posture by standing on it patient. In practice there are exists many balance platform construction solutions, notwithstanding there are solutions in which at basis of set static parameters and patients feet pressure mechanism perform motion moves by established in advance trajectory. To improve effectiveness of work and system control, balance platform movement wouldn’t be dependent only from controllable patient position in relation to platform, but also from its height, mass and biofeedback parameters. In such system human body should be deal as biomechanical system with defined inputs and outputs. In the article basic dynamic properties are described
