The Spanish term structure of interest rates revisited: cointegration with multiple structural breaks, 1974-2010

    Get PDF
In this paper we consider the possibility that a linear cointegrated regression model with multiples structural changes would provide a better empirical description of the term structure model of interest rates. Our methodology is based on instability tests recently proposed in Kejriwal and Perron (2010) as well as the cointegration test in Arai and Kurozumi (2007) and Kejriwal (2008) developed to allow for multiple breaks under the null hypothesis of cointegration.Term structure of interest rates; Cointegration; Multiple Structural Breaks.

Practical Characterization of Cell-Electrode Electrical Models in Bio-Impedance Assays

    Get PDF
This paper presents the fitting process followed to adjust the parameters of the electrical model associated to a cell-electrode system in Electrical Cell-substrate Impedance Spectroscopy (ECIS) technique, to the experimental results from cell-culture assays. A new parameter matching procedure is proposed, under the basis of both, mismatching between electrodes and time-evolution observed in the system response, as consequence of electrode fabrication processes and electrochemical performance of electrode-solution interface, respectively. The obtained results agree with experimental performance, and enable the evaluation of the cell number in a culture, by using the electrical measurements observed at the oscillation parameters in the test circuits employed.

In the industrialised countries, soil and groundwater contamination caused by uncontrolled spills of industrial wastes is one of the most critical environmental problem, because its removal is expensive and difficult to carry out, and the effects persist during many years. In Spain this problem is especially notorious due to an inadequate management policy derived from the absence of coordination between the different involved sectors. The treatment installations are inot enough, so it has produced spillings in streams and soils or its storage in uncontrolled landfillings. The experiences and guidelines of the Environmental Protection Agency from United States have served to the industrialised countries to evaluate this kind of contamination. This methodology is based on its identification and delimitation in soil and groundwater. After the design of a monitoring and control program it can be established the correcting measures. For this reason it is important to know the transfer processes of pollutants between the saturated and not saturated medium, for this reason it is essential the use of geochemical and geophysical methods and their combination with hydrogeological methods. In Spain, this kind of studies is only carried out recently. A case history is the contamination of the alluvial aquifer of the Besos river (Barcelona) by Cr-VI and other heavy metals and organic microcontaminants

Current research initiatives for the long-term monitoring of impacts of silviculture are scattered and not integrated into research networks, with the consequent losses of opportunities and capacity for action. To increase the scientific and practical impacts of these experiences, it is necessary to establish logical frameworks that harmonize the information and help us to define the most appropriate treatments. In this context, a number of research groups in Spain have produced research achievements and know-how during the last decades that can allow for the improvement in AFM. These groups address the issue of AFM from different fields, such as ecophysiology, ecohydrology and forest ecology, thus resulting in valuable but dispersed expertise. The main objective of this work is to introduce a comprehensive strategy aimed to study the implementation of AFM in Spain. As a first step, a network of 34 experimental sites managed by 14 different research groups is proposed and justified. As a second step, the most important AFM impacts on Mediterranean pines, as one of the most extended natural and planted forest types in Spain, are presented. Finally, open questions dealing with key aspects when attempting to implement an AFM framework are discussed. This study is expected to contribute to better outlining the procedures and steps needed to implement regional frameworks for AFM.CEHYRFO-MED CGL2017-86839-C3-2-RDEHESACLIM AGL2017-83828-C2-2-R, IB16185, LIFE17 CCA/ES/000063, PID2019-106583RB-I00, RTI2018-096884-B-C31ESPAS CGL2015-65569-R, RTI2018-095037-B-I00ESPECTRAMED CGL2015-69773-C2-1-P, CGL2017-86161-R, LIFE14 CCM/ES/001271European Social Fund 2014–2020 ProgramINERTIA PID2019-111332RB-C22-BDVGeneralitat de CatalunyaGeneralitat Valenciana UB-LE-9055Ministerio de Ciencia e InnovaciónEuropean Social Fund DOC_0055, RED2018-102719-TJunta de Andalucí

Coronavirus disease 2019 (covid-19) was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation on 11 March 2020. As well as having a devastating impact on societies worldwide, covid-19 brought with it not only the spontaneous creation of many neologisms on social media, but also the widespread use of technical terms in all sorts of texts. Many of these terms have been compiled online in the English-Spanish language pair in the Glossary of covid-19 terms (en-es), which is regularly updated on the Tremédica website with support from the Cosnautas platform. The “Abridged glossary of covid-19 terms (enes)” published in this issue of Panace@ is an excerpt from it, and includes 810 entries covering the molecular biology of coronaviruses, clinical features of covid-19, coronavirus detection tests, diagnostic imaging tests, protective equipment, and the covid-19 vaccines being developed, as well as unusual neologisms, with particular emphasis on terms that are difficult to translate

Influence of environmental factors on the sport performance of the horse, in an objective selection test (Show Jumping)

Participan animales jóvenes (4 a 6 años). Since 2004, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of Spain organize the Young Horses Performance Selection Tests, for different disciplines, like Show Jumping. Only young animals participate in these events (4 to 6 years old). With the data collected during 3 years (4.441 participations from 87 different horses), we have analyzed the environmental factors that influence the performance results of the animal in these type of tests. A Proc MIXED model from SAS was used, including final penalizations and transformed ranking as dependent variables. 14 factors, related to the animal (age, sex…), the competition location and the racetrack conditions, the climatologic conditions, the training level and the stress level of the animal, were analyzed before the competition. The rider and the father were included in the model as random factors, and the participation order as the covariate. Although most of the factors and their combinations were significant, they explained a very low variance (from 0.07% to 1.78%), excluding the age (2.40%), the father effect (9.25%) and the rider (8.28%)

Physical and antioxidant properties of chitosan and methylcellulose based films containing resveratrol

[EN] New trends in edible films focus on the improvement of their functionality through the incorporation of active compounds, such as antimicrobial or antioxidant agents. Resveratrol is a natural antioxidant found in a variety of plant species, such as grapes, and could be used for minimizing or preventing lipid oxidation in food products, retarding the formation of oxidation products, maintaining nutritional quality and prolonging the food shelf life. The aim of this work was to develop and characterize two different polymeric composite films (made with chitosan (CH) and methylcellulose (MC)) containing different amounts of resveratrol. This compound could be incorporated efficiently into both films, but provoke structural changes in the matrices, which became less stretchable (65-70% reduction of deformation at break at the greatest resveratrol content) and resistant to fracture (26 and 54% reduction of tensile at break for MC and CH, respectively, at the greatest resveratrol content) more opaque (significant reduction of the internal transmittance) and less glossy (about 60-65% reduction of gloss at the greatest resveratrol content). Film barrier properties were hardly improved by the presence of resveratrol; water vapour and oxygen permeability tend to slightly decrease when resveratrol was incorporated into both polymers. Composite films showed antioxidant activity, which was proportional to the resveratrol concentration in the film. None of the films showed antimicrobial activity against Penicillium italicum and Botrytis cinerea. Thus, these films could be applied to food products which are sensitive to oxidative processes to prolong their shelf life. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
