Engajamento Político Transnacional e a Incorporação Cívica de Imigrantes Mexicanos nos Estados Unidos
Many migrants to the U.S. are engaged in public affairs in their country of origin. Whether such engagement impedes or encourages engagement in American politics remains an open question. Drawing from a unique two-wave panel survey of Mexican immigrants conducted in 2006, with surveys waves fielded to correspond to national elections in Mexico and the United States, we examine the relationship between transnational political engagement and attentiveness to American politics. The findings indicate that remote political engagement in Mexican politics is not a barrier to incorporation in the U.S. context. On the contrary, engagement in Mexican campaigns can stimulate interest and participation in U.S. elections.Muchos de los migrantes a los Estados Unidos se involucran en la vida cívica de su país de origen. Es pregunta abierta si tal participación impide o promueve la participación en la política norteamericana. Utilizando datos de una encuesta de inmigrantes mexicanos en dos olas llevadas a cabo en 2006, coordinadas con las elecciones nacionales en México y los Estados Unidos, investigamos la relación entre la participación política trasnacional y la atención a la política norteamericana. Los hallazgos señalan que la participación en la política mexicana no es obstáculo a la incorporación cívica en el contexto norteamericano. Al contrario, la atención a las campañas mexicanas puede estimular el interés y la participación en las elecciones estadunidenses.Muitas pessoas que migram para os Estados Unidos continuam engajadas em assuntos públicos em seu país de origem, mas não está claro se esse engajamento impede ou incentiva o envolvimento na política americana. O presente estudo examina a relação entre o engajamento político transnacional e a atenção à política americana, com base em uma pesquisa de painel de duas ondas realizada com imigrantes mexicanos em 2006. As duas ondas da pesquisa correspondem às eleições nacionais no México e nos Estados Unidos. Os resultados indicam que o engajamento à distância na política mexicana não é uma barreira para a incorporação no contexto dos Estados Unidos. Pelo contrário, o engajamento em campanhas mexicanas pode estimular o interesse e a participação nas eleições americanas
Model-based engineering of widgets, user applications and servers compliant with ARINC 661 specification
International audienceThe purpose of ARINC 661 specification [1] is to define interfaces to a Cockpit Display System (CDS) used in any types of aircraft installations. ARINC 661 provides precise information for communication protocol between application (called User Applications) and user interface components (called widgets) as well as precise information about the widgets themselves. However, in ARINC 661, no information is given about the behaviour of these widgets and about the behaviour of an application made up of a set of such widgets. This paper presents the results of the application of a formal description technique to the various elements of ARINC 661 specification within an industrial project. This formal description technique called Interactive Cooperative Objects defines in a precise and non-ambiguous way all the elements of ARINC 661 specification. The application of the formal description techniques is shown on an interactive application called MPIA (Multi Purpose Interactive Application). Within this application, we present how ICO are used for describing interactive widgets, User Applications and User Interface servers (in charge of interaction techniques). The emphasis is put on the model-based management of the feel of the applications allowing rapid prototyping of the external presentation and the interaction techniques. Lastly, we present the CASE (Computer Aided Software Engineering) tool supporting the formal description technique and its new extensions in order to deal with large scale applications as the ones targeted at by ARINC 661 specification
Role of dopamine in dorsal medial prefrontal cortex in yohimbine-induced reinstatement of food seeking in rats
In humans, relapse to maladaptive eating habits during dieting is
often provoked by stress.Weadapted a drug relapse-reinstatement
model to study the role of stress in relapse to food seeking
(Nair et al., Prog. Neurobiol., 2009). In our model, the anxiogenic
drug yohimbine, an alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist, that causes
stress-like responses in humans and laboratory animals, reliably
reinstates food seeking.Werecently found that yohimbine-induced
reinstatement of food seeking is attenuated by systemic injections
of SCH23390 (a D1-family receptor antagonist) but not clonidine
(an alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist). Here, we studied the role of
the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in yohimbine-induced reinstatement.
We trained food-restricted rats to lever-press for 35%
high-fat pellets every other day (9–15 3 h sessions). We then extinguished
the food-reinforced operant responding for 10–14 days by
removing the pellets. Subsequently, we tested the effect of systemic
injections of yohimbine (0, 2 mg/kg) on reinstatement of food
seeking. In Exp. 1we found that yohimbine-induced reinstatement
was associated with strong induction of Fos (a marker of neuronal
activity) in the dorsal mPFC and weaker Fos induction in the ventral
mPFC. In Exp. 2 we found that dorsal but not ventral mPFC
injections of the D1-family receptor antagonist SCH23390 (0.5,
1.0g/side) decreased yohimbine-induced reinstatement of food
seeking. Our data indicate a critical role of dorsal mPFC dopamine in
reinstatement food seeking induced by the pharmacological stressor
yohimbine
Finding common ground: identifying and eilciting metacognition in ePortfolios
Research has suggested ePortfolios reveal and support students’ metacognition, that is, their awareness, tracking, and evaluation of their learning over time. However, due to the wide variety of purposes and audiences for ePortfolios, it has been unclear whether there might be common criteria for identifying and assessing metacognition in ePortfolios across varied contexts. The purpose of this study was to identify evidence of metacognition across ePortfolios of three distinct populations of students: traditional-age undergraduates, graduate Education students, and adults returning to school to complete a bachelor’s degree. We set out to explore if and how ePortfolios could support these different learners’ growth as reflective, intentional learners and professionals. Through a qualitative coding process, we identified four key metacognition markers across students’ ePortfolios in these three populations. We conclude students can be guided to engage in metacognition in ways through thoughtful assignment design and assessment process, no matter their context
Anchoring of proteins to lactic acid bacteria
The anchoring of proteins to the cell surface of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) using genetic techniques is an exciting and emerging research area that holds great promise for a wide variety of biotechnological applications. This paper reviews five different types of anchoring domains that have been explored for their efficiency in attaching hybrid proteins to the cell membrane or cell wall of LAB. The most exploited anchoring regions are those with the LPXTG box that bind the proteins in a covalent way to the cell wall. In recent years, two new modes of cell wall protein anchoring have been studied and these may provide new approaches in surface display. The important progress that is being made with cell surface display of chimaeric proteins in the areas of vaccine development and enzyme- or whole-cell immobilisation is highlighted.
The APEX framework: prototyping of ubiquitous environments based on Petri Nets
The user experience of ubiquitous environments is a determining factor in their success. The characteristics of such systems must be explored as early as possible to anticipate potential user problems, and to reduce the cost of redesign. However, the development of early prototypes to be evaluated in the target environment can be disruptive
to the ongoing system and therefore unacceptable. This paper reports on an ongoing effort to explore how model-based rapid prototyping of ubiquitous
environments might be used to avoid actual deployment while still enabling users to interact with a representation of the system. The paper describes APEX, a framework that brings together an existing 3D Application Server with CPN Tools. APEX-based prototypes enable users to navigate a virtual world simulation of the envisaged ubiquitous environment.

Mars Sample Return: The Value of Depth Profiles
Sample return from Mars offers the promise of data from Martian materials that have previously only been available from meteorites. Return of carefully selected samples may yield more information about the history of water and possible habitability through Martian history. Here we propose that samples collected from Mars should include depth profiles of material across the interface between weathered material on the surface of Mars into unweathered parent rock material. Such profiles have the potential to yield chemical kinetic data that can be used to estimate the duration of water and information about potential habitats on Mars

Basalt weathering rates on Earth and the duration of liquid water on the plains of Gusev Crater, Mars
Where Martian rocks have been exposed to liquid water, chemistry versus depth profiles could elucidate both Martian climate history and potential for life. The persistence of primary minerals in weathered profiles constrains the exposure time to liquid water: on Earth, mineral persistence times range from {approx}10 ka (olivine) to {approx}250 ka (glass) to {approx}1Ma (pyroxene) to {approx}5Ma (plagioclase). Such persistence times suggest mineral persistence minima on Mars. However, Martian solutions may have been more acidic than on Earth. Relative mineral weathering rates observed for basalt in Svalbard (Norway) and Costa Rica demonstrate that laboratory pH trends can be used to estimate exposure to liquid water both qualitatively (mineral absence or presence) and quantitatively (using reactive transport models). Qualitatively, if the Martian solution pH > {approx}2, glass should persist longer than olivine; therefore, persistence of glass may be a pH-indicator. With evidence for the pH of weathering, the reactive transport code CrunchFlow can quantitatively calculate the minimum duration of exposure to liquid water consistent with a chemical profile. For the profile measured on the surface of Humphrey in Gusev Crater, the minimum exposure time is 22 ka. If correct, this estimate is consistent with short-term, episodic alteration accompanied by ongoing surface erosion. More of these depth profiles should be measured to illuminate the weathering history of Mars
Oestradiol-17β plasma concentrations after intramuscular injection of oestradiol benzoate or oestradiol cypionate in llamas (Lama glama)
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Llamas (<it>Lama glama</it>) are induced ovulators and the process of ovulation depends on dominant follicular size. In addition, a close relationship between behavioural estrus and ovulation is not registered in llamas. Therefore, the exogenous control of follicular development with hormones aims to predict the optimal time to mate. Oestradiol-17β (E<sub>2</sub>) and its esters are currently used in domestic species, including camelids, in synchronization treatments. But, in llamas, there is no reports regarding the appropriate dosages to be used and most protocols have been designed by extrapolation from those recommended for other ruminants. The aim of the present study was to characterize plasma E<sub>2 </sub>concentrations in intact female llamas following a single intramuscular (i.m.) injection of two oestradiol esters: oestradiol benzoate (EB) and oestradiol cypionate (ECP).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Twelve non pregnant and non lactating sexually mature llamas were i.m. injected on day 0 with 2.5 mg of EB (EB group, n = 6) or ECP (ECP group, n = 6). Blood samples were collected immediately before injection, at 1, 6, 12, 24 h after treatment and then daily until day 14 post injection. Changes in hormone concentrations with time were analyzed in each group by analysis of variance (ANOVA) using a repeated measures (within-SS) design. Plasma E<sub>2 </sub>concentrations and area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) values were compared between groups by ANOVA. In all cases a Least-Significant Difference test (LSD) was used to determine differences between means. Hormonal and AUC data are expressed as mean ± S.E.M.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Peak plasma E<sub>2 </sub>concentrations were achieved earlier and were higher in EB group than in ECP group. Thereafter, E<sub>2 </sub>returned to physiological concentrations earlier in EB group (day 5) than in ECP group (day 9). Although plasma E<sub>2 </sub>profiles differed over time among groups there were no differences between them on AUC values.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The i.m. injection of a single dose of both oestradiol esters resulted in plasma E<sub>2 </sub>concentrations exceeding physiological values for a variable period. Moreover, the plasma E<sub>2 </sub>profiles observed depended on the derivative of oestradiol administered. This basic information becomes relevant at defining treatment protocols including oestrogens in llamas.</p
