    TAN: A Distributed Algorithm for Dynamic Task Assignment in WSNs

    We consider the scenario of wireless sensor networks where a given application has to be deployed and each application task has to be assigned to each node in the best possible way. Approaches where decisions on task execution are taken by a single central node can avoid the exchange of data packets between task execution nodes but cannot adapt to dynamic network conditions, and suffer from computational complexity. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose an adaptive and decentralized task allocation negotiation algorithm (TAN) for cluster network topologies. It is based on noncooperative game theory, where neighboring nodes engage in negotiations to maximize their own utility functions to agree on which of them should execute single application tasks. Performance is evaluated in a city scenario, where the urban streets are equipped with different sensors and the application target is the detection of the fastest way to reach a destination, and in random WSN scenarios. Comparisons are made with three other algorithms: 1) baseline setting with no task assignment to multiple nodes; 2) centralized task assignment lifetime optimization; and 3) a dynamic distributed algorithm, DLMA.     Cooperative task assignment for distributed deployment of applications in WSNs

    Nodes in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are becoming more and more complex systems with the capabilities to run distributed structured applications. Which single task should be implemented by each WSN node needs to be decided by the application deployment strategy by taking into account both network lifetime and execution time requirements. In this paper, we propose an adaptive decentralised algorithm based on noncooperative game theory, where neighbouring nodes negotiate among each other to maximize their utility function. We then prove that an increment of the nodes utility corresponds to the same increment of the utility for the whole network. Simulation results show significant performance improvement with respect to existing algorithms

    Photoreactivity of biologically active compounds. XIX: Excited states and free radicals from the antimalarial drug primaquine

    The formation and reactivity of excited states and free radicals from primaquine was studied in order to evaluate the primary photochemical reaction mechanisms. The excited primaquine triplet was not detected, but is likely to be formed with a short lifetime (< 50 ns) and with a triplet energy < 250 kJ/mol as the drug is an efficient quencher of the fenbufen triplet and the biphenyl triplet, and forms 1O2 by laser flash photolysis (PQΦΔ = 0.025). Primaquine photoionises by a biphotonic process and also forms the monoprotonated cation radical (PQH2+•) by one electron oxidation by OH• (kq = 6.6•109 M-1s-1) and Br2•- (kq = 4.7•109 M-1s-1) at physiological pH, detected as a long-lived transient decaying essentially by a second order process (k2 = 7.4•108 M-1s-1). PQH2+• is scavenged by O2, although at a limited rate (kq = 1.0•106 M-1s-1). The reduction potential (E°) of PQH2+• / PQH+ is < +1015 mV. Primaquine also forms PQH2+• at pH 2.4, by one electron oxidation by Br2•- and proton loss (kq = 2.7•109 M-1s-1). The non-protonated cation radical (PQ+•) is formed during one electron oxidation with Br2•- at alkaline conditions (kq = 4.2•109 M-1s-1 at pH 10.8). The estimated pKa-value of PQH2+•/ PQ+• is pKa ~ 7-8. Primaquine is not a scavenger of O2•- at physiological pH. Thus self-sensitization by O2•- is eliminated as a degradation pathway in the photochemical reactions. Impurities in the raw material and photochemical degradation products initiate photosensitized degradation of primaquine in deuterium oxide, prevented by addition of the 1O2 quencher sodium azide. Photosensitized degradation by formation of 1O2 is thus important for the initial photochemical decomposition of primaquine, which also proceeds by free radical reactions. Formation of PQH2+• is expected to play an essential part in the photochemical degradation process in a neutral, aqueous medium

    Critical care admission trends and outcomes in individuals with bronchiectasis in the UK

    Background: There are limited data on admission trends and outcomes of individuals with bronchiectasis admitted to intensive care (ICU). Using national critical care data, we analysed admissions to ICU and estimated outcomes in terms of mortality in individuals with bronchiectasis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) admitted to ICU. Methods: Using data from the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre, admissions from bronchiectasis and COPD from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2013 were extracted. Crude admission rates for bronchiectasis and COPD were calculated and Poisson regression was used to estimate unadjusted annual admission rate ratios. We investigated changes to length of stay on ICU, ICU mortality and in-hospital mortality during the study period. We also compared mortality rates in people with bronchiectasis and COPD aged 70 or above. Results: We found an annual increase of 8% (95% Confidence Interval [CI] 2-15) in the number of ICU admissions from bronchiectasis, whilst the yearly increase in ICU admissions from COPD was 1% (95% CI 0.3-2). ICU and in-hospital mortality was higher in individuals with bronchiectasis compared with those with COPD, especially in people aged 70 years or above. Conclusion: Admission to ICU in people with bronchiectasis are uncommon, but are increasing in frequency over time, and carries a substantial mortality rate. This needs to be considered allocating health care resources and planning respiratory services

    Scavenging of retinoid cation radicals by urate, trolox, and α-, β-, γ-, and δ-tocopherols

    Retinoids are present in human tissues exposed to light and under increased risk of oxidative stress, such as the retina and skin. Retinoid cation radicals can be formed as a result of the interaction between retinoids and other radicals or photoexcitation with light. It has been shown that such semi-oxidized retinoids can oxidize certain amino acids and proteins, and that α-tocopherol can scavenge the cation radicals of retinol and retinoic acid. The aim of this study was to determine (i) whether β-, γ-, and δ-tocopherols can also scavenge these radicals, and (ii) whether tocopherols can scavenge the cation radicals of another form of vitamin A-retinal. The retinoid cation radicals were generated by the pulse radiolysis of benzene or aqueous solution in the presence of a selected retinoid under oxidizing conditions, and the kinetics of retinoid cation radical decays were measured in the absence and presence of different tocopherols, Trolox or urate. The bimolecular rate constants are the highest for the scavenging of cation radicals of retinal, (7 to 8) × 109 M−1·s−1, followed by retinoic acid, (0.03 to 5.6) × 109 M−1·s−1, and retinol, (0.08 to 1.6) × 108 M−1·s−1. Delta-tocopherol is the least effective scavenger of semi-oxidized retinol and retinoic acid. The hydrophilic analogue of α-tocopherol, Trolox, is substantially less efficient at scavenging retinoid cation radicals than α-tocopherol and urate, but it is more efficient at scavenging the cation radicals of retinoic acid and retinol than δ-tocopherol. The scavenging rate constants indicate that tocopherols can effectively compete with amino acids and proteins for retinoid cation radicals, thereby protecting these important biomolecules from oxidation. Our results provide another mechanism by which tocopherols can diminish the oxidative damage to the skin and retina and thereby protect from skin photosensitivity and the development and/or progression of changes in blinding retinal diseases such as Stargardt’s disease and age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

    Health on the Move (HOME) Study: Using a smartphone app to explore the health and wellbeing of migrants in the United Kingdom [version 1; peer review: 2 approved]

    Background/Aim: We have a limited understanding of the broader determinants of health of international migrants and how these change over time since migration to the United Kingdom (UK). To address this knowledge gap, we aim to conduct a prospective cohort study with data acquisition via a smartphone application (app). In this pilot study, we aim to 1) determine the feasibility of the use of an app for data collection in international migrants, 2) optimise app engagement by quantifying the impact of specific design features on the completion rates of survey questionnaires and on study retention, 3) gather preliminary profile health status data, to begin to examine how risk factors for health are distributed among migrants. / Methods: We will recruit 275 participants through a social media campaign and through third sector organisations that work with or support migrants in the UK. Following consent and registration, data will be collected via surveys. To optimise app engagement and study retention, we will quantify the impact of specific design features (i.e. the frequency of survey requests, the time of day for app notifications, the frequency of notifications, and the wording of notifications) via micro-randomised process evaluations. The primary outcome for this study is survey completion rates with numerator as the number of surveys completed and denominator as the total number of available surveys. Secondary outcomes are study retention rates and ratings of interest after app usage. / Ethics and dissemination: We have obtained approval to use consented patient identifiable data from the University College London Ethics Committee. Improving engagement with the app and gathering preliminary health profile data will help us identify accessibility and usability issues and other barriers to app and study engagement prior to moving to a larger study

    Presence of a prothrombotic state in people with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: a population-based case-control study

    BACKGROUND: Laboratory studies suggest that the clotting cascade is activated in fibrotic lungs. Since humans vary in their tendency to clot due to a variety of inherited or acquired defects, we investigated whether a prothrombotic state increases the chance of developing idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and/or worsens the prognosis of IPF. METHODS: We recruited 211 incident cases of IPF and 256 age-and sex-matched general population controls and collected data on medical history, medication, smoking habit, blood samples as well as lung function and high-resolution CT scans done as part of routine clinical care. A prothrombotic state was defined as the presence of at least one inherited or acquired clotting defect or marker of fibrinolytic dysfunction. We used logistic regression to quantify the association between a prothrombotic state and IPF adjusted for age, sex, smoking habit and highly sensitive C reactive protein. Cox regression was used to determine the influence of a prothrombotic state on survival. RESULTS: Cases were more than four times more likely than controls to have a prothrombotic state (OR 4.78, 95% CI 2.93 to 7.80; p<0.0001). Cases with a prothrombotic state were also likely to have more severe disease (forced vital capacity <70% predicted) at presentation (OR 10.79, 95% CI 2.43 to 47.91) and had a threefold increased risk of death (HR 3.26, 95% CI 1.09 to 9.75). CONCLUSIONS: People with IPF are more likely to have a prothrombotic state than general population controls and the presence of a prothrombotic state has an adverse impact on survival

    Virtual Support for Real-World Movement:Using Chatbots to Overcome Barriers to Physical Activity

    Conversational agents (CAs, aka chatbots) for behavioral interventions have great potential to improve patient engagement and provide solutions that can benefit human health. In this study, we examined the potential efficacy of chatbots in assisting with the resolution of specific barriers that people frequently encounter when doing behavioral interventions for the purpose of increasing physical activity (PA). To do this, six common barriers (i.e., things that stand in the way of increasing PA) were targeted (e.g., stress and fatigue), we adopted domain knowledge (i.e., psychological theories and behavioral change techniques) to design six interventions aimed at tackling each of these six barriers. These interventions were then incorporated into consultative conversations, which were subsequently integrated into a chatbot. A user study was conducted on non-clinical samples (n=77) where all participants were presented with three randomly but equally distributed chatbot interventions and a control condition. Each intervention conversation addressed a specific barrier to PA, while the control conversation did not address any barrier. The outcome variables were beliefs in PA engagement, attitudes toward the effectiveness of each intervention to resolve the barrier, and the overall chatbot experience. The results showed a significant increase in beliefs of PA engagement in most intervention groups compared to the control group, and positive attitudes toward the effectiveness of the interventions in reducing their respective barriers to PA, and positive chatbot experience. The results demonstrate that theory-grounded interventions delivered by chatbots can effectively help people overcome specific barriers to PA, thereby increasing their beliefs in PA engagement. These promising findings indicate that chatbot interventions can be an accessible and widely applicable solution for a larger population to promote PA.</p
