ANALYZING LINKAGES BETWEEN NURSERY FARM GROWTH RATES, STRUCTURAL VARIABLES, AND FIRM CHARACTERISTICS

Production of ornamental plants is one of agriculture's successes. However, concentration of production and retailing is occurring, bringing additional competitive pressure. An econometric model is used to explain growth rate using a cross-sectional data set from 2001, self-reported growth rates for nursery firms, and firm and operator characteristics.Production Economics,

Ornamental and horticultural products and services represent one of the growing sectors in agriculture. This study includes data collection and an input-out IMPLAN model used to estimate the total economic impact of the green industry on Louisianas economy. This model provided results in total impact in personal income, gross state product, employment, expenditures in selected sectors and multiplier tables.Production Economics,

Genomic variation and population structure detected by single nucleotide polymorphism arrays in Corriedale, Merino and Creole sheep.

THE AIM OF THIS STUDY WAS TO INVESTIGATE THE GENETIC DIVERSITY WITHIN AND AMONG THREE BREEDS OF SHEEP: Corriedale, Merino and Creole. Sheep from the three breeds (Merino n = 110, Corriedale n = 108 and Creole n = 10) were genotyped using the Illumina Ovine SNP50 beadchip(®). Genetic diversity was evaluated by comparing the minor allele frequency (MAF) among breeds. Population structure and genetic differentiation were assessed using STRUCTURE software, principal component analysis (PCA) and fixation index (FST). Fixed markers (MAF = 0) that were different among breeds were identified as specific breed markers. Using a subset of 18,181 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), PCA and STUCTURE analysis were able to explain population stratification within breeds. Merino and Corriedale divergent lines showed high levels of polymorphism (89.4% and 86% of polymorphic SNPs, respectively) and moderate genetic differentiation (FST = 0.08) between them. In contrast, Creole had only 69% polymorphic SNPs and showed greater genetic differentiation from the other two breeds (FST = 0.17 for both breeds). Hence, a subset of molecular markers present in the OvineSNP50 is informative enough for breed assignment and population structure analysis of commercial and Creole breeds

Genetic variability in Tetranychus urticae (Acari : Tetranychidae) from Greece : insecticide resistance and isozymes

Analysis of polymeric phenolics in red wines using different techniques combined with gel permeation chromatography fractionation

    Get PDF
A multiple-step analytical method was developed to improve the analysis of polymeric phenolics in red wines. With a common initial step based on the fractionation of wine phenolics by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), different analytical techniques were used: high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (HPLC-DAD), HPLC-mass spectrometry (MS), capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and spectrophotometry. This method proved to be valid for analyzing different families of phenolic compounds, such as monomeric phenolics and their derivatives, polymeric pigments and proanthocyanidins. The analytical characteristics of fractionation by GPC were studied and the method was fully validated, yielding satisfactory statistical results. GPC fractionation substantially improved the analysis of polymeric pigments by CZE, in terms of response, repeatability and reproducibility. It also represented an improvement in the traditional vanillin assay used for proanthocyanidin (PA) quantification. Astringent proanthocyanidins were also analyzed using a simple combined method that allowed these compounds, for which only general indexes were available, to be quantified. © 2005 Elsevier B.V.
