    Get PDF

An Algorithm for k-insertion into a Binary Heap

    Get PDF
In this thesis, we present an algorithm for k-insertion into a binary heap running in worst-case time O(k+log(k)·log(n+k)), improving the standard k-insertion algorithm for binary heaps in terms of worst-case running time. The algorithm combines two routines called Heapify and Walk down. We assess the performance of the algorithm in theory and practice and compare it to some well-known k-insertion methods. We do this by implementing the algorithms and measuring and comparing their running times on different datasets. Through practical tests, we conclude that the algorithm performs better than the standard k-insertion algorithm on worst-case input while being slightly slower on randomized input. We, therefore, conclude that it can be better in real-world applications.Masteroppgave i informatikkINF399MAMN-PROGMAMN-IN

operations with observations from the ground using various techniques and spectral domains (Lellouch and Witasse, 2008). We present an analysis of Venus Doppler winds at cloud tops based on observations made at the Canada France Hawaii 3.6-m telescope (CFHT) with the ESPaDOnS visible spectrograph. These observations consisted of high-resolution spectra of Fraunhofer lines in the visible range (0.37-1.05 μm) to measure the winds at cloud tops using the Doppler shift of solar radiation scattered by cloud top particles in the observer's direction (Widemann et al., 2007, 2008). The observations were made during 19-20 February 2011 and were coordinated with Visual Monitoring Camera (VMC) observations by Venus Express. The complete optical spectrum was collected over 40 spectral orders at each point with 2-5 seconds exposures, at a resolution of about 80000. The observations included various points of the dayside hemisphere at a phase angle of 67°, between +10° and -60° latitude, in steps of 10° , and from +70° to -12° longitude relative to sub-Earth meridian in steps of 12°. The Doppler shift measured in scattered solar light on Venus dayside results from two instantaneous motions: (1) a motion between the Sun and Venus upper cloud particles; (2) a motion between the observer and Venus clouds. The measured Doppler shift, which results from these two terms combined, varies with the planetocentric longitude and latitude and is minimum at meridian ΦN = ΦSun - ΦEarth where the two components subtract to each other for a pure zonal regime. Due to the need for maintaining a stable velocity reference during the course of acquisition using high resolution spectroscopy, we measure relative Doppler shifts to ΦN. The main purpose of our work is to provide variable wind measurements with respect to the background atmosphere, complementary to simultaneous measurements made with the VMC camera onboard the Venus Express. We will present first results from this work, comparing with previous results by the CFHT/ESPaDOnS and VLT-UVES spectrographs (Machado et al., 2012), with Galileo fly-by measurements and with VEx nominal mission observations (Peralta et al., 2007, Luz et al., 2011). A study of coordinator positionings in family group conferences

    Get PDF
Although the coordinator is essential in mobilizing and remobilizing the social network of individual participants during the family group conference (FGC) process, we lack knowledge on the coordinators’ meaning and their interaction with various FGC actors. The data in this study come from nine interviews with FGC coordinators conducted as part of a randomized controlled study in which FGCs were implemented in two Norwegian municipalities: Oslo and Bergen. Positioning theory is used as an analytical tool for interpreting the findings. The results indicate that it is a challenge for coordinators to maintain the ideal of the ‘neutral’ coordinator while building trusting relationships with participants. Coordinators’ strategies for managing these challenges are interpreted as discursive positionings that enable communication, trust and participation, potentially securing FGC as an empowering process for the participant. The results indicate that coordinators are crucial actors in carrying out the FGC proces

structural geology, physiography, geophysics, and marine geology who wrote cogent syntheses that considered Earth from several vantages. In his earliest book, he presented what he called an “eclectic theory ” of volcanic action and magmatic differentiation, and thus I describe him as an “eclectic theoretician of the Earth.” The son of a tea merchant and a minister’s daughter, Daly was born on a farm near Napanee, southeastern Ontario, the youngest of four sons and five daughters. Late in his career, he recalled the simple life of a small town, the high standards of conduct expected by his parents, and an early introduction to the importance of hard work and wide reading. He was educated in public schools and attended Victoria College in Ontario (B.A., 1891; S.B., 1892; instructor in mathematics, 1892). There, inspired by Professor A.P. Coleman’s description of granite (“This is made of crystals.”), he decided on a career in geology. Encouraged by interviews with Nathaniel Southgate Shaler an

This article deals with violence exercised by girls (hereinafter referred to as "girl violence"). A combined perspective is how âageâ and âgenderâ as cultural constructions can throw light both on the media debate concerning girl violence and just what young girls themselves understand by violence.By focusing on newspaper coverage of the "Rognan Case", in which a gang of girls maltreated and then let their 15-year-old girlfriend be raped, it is primarily discussed how media discourse elucidates the violation of age and gender norms. An analysis of the media's coverage of girl violence shows that the media acts as a protector of boundaries, within which violence continues to be coupled with aspects of masculinity.Furthermore, the article includes examples from interviews with girls who have themselves participated in violence. How do they react to the notions concerning gender and age? It is argued that the young girls both interpret and justify their actions within a narrow framework of feminine forms of expression. Violence and crime remain associated both with age and gender. Adolescence is a category where deviation and overstepping boundaries is almost anticipated, but this applies when referring to boys. Girls have a smaller deviation repertoire. Consequently, young girls who participate in violence are an extremely marginal group in the debate on adolescence and adolescent violence. The text ends up, therefore, by reflecting on what will happen when our cultural ideas on what a young girl ought to be, mingles with the social representation of the young girls themselves

Karriereveiledning fremstilles ganske likt i strategiene. This Master Thesis is a Qualitative Text Analysis of The National Competence- Policy Strategy 2017- 2021 and The Competence Strategy for Trøndelag. The goal here is to find out what expectations are created towards my career guidance praxis, through the conceptions of people, communities, and career guidance in these strategies. The project is founded in the science of Hermeneutics and Constructivist Interactionism. Conceptions of the society, the individual, groups of individuals, and career guidance, are described in this thesis by the way of a qualitative content analysis. The research findings in this thesis show that conceptions of the society is all about fast changes, restructuring and the needs for competences, competition, efficiency and productivity. There is also a focus on welfare, sustainibility, and the Norwegian Working Life Model. Society and the working life are often portrayed as an objective reality to which people have to adapt. It is portrayed that individuals and groups need to have the correct and necessary skills required in the working life, as well as the abilities to change in accordance with society and the labor market. The wording used in the strategies in question often implies that it is the responsibility of individuals and groups to have the required skills to be a part of the work force. The conceptions of individuals and groups varies to some degree throughout and between the strategies: in recognizing structures as limiting to individuals and groups, and where to place the responsibility in question. Career guidance is portrayed in mostly the same ways throughout the strategies. It is my opinion that this clarifies what is expected of career guidance services: To contribute to helping the population adapt and make «good» choices in the way of meeting the skills requirements of the work life. In this thesis I argue that these findings emphasize the importance of an ethical awareness in the field of career guidance. The mission statement and the ethical guidelines in The National Framework for Quality in Career Guidance can work as a support for the career guidance practitioners when facing these kinds of expectations. However, there may be a need for the career guidance practitioner’s ethical commitments to be better known also outside of the field of career guidance praxis. This might prevent expectations that challenges one’s mission statement in future
