    Morpho-physiological and Molecular Variability in Salt Tolerant and Susceptible Popular Cultivars and their Derivatives at Seedling Stage and Potential Parental Combinations in Breeding for Salt Tolerance in Rice

    Saltol, a major QTL for salt exclusion, was derived from ‘Pokkali’, a salt-tolerant rice cultivar. Apart from Pokkali, many genotypes with wide variation for salinity tolerance offer ample scope for identifying new genes or QTLs underlying various tolerance mechanisms. Such genes could be aggregated into high-yielding backgrounds to reinforce a breeding programme. To identify potential donors for salt tolerance and prospective parental combinations for developing high-yielding salt-tolerant cultivars, ten genotypes were subjected to salt stress and evaluated for morpho-physiological traits and marker-allele polymorphism in the Saltol-QTL region. Although the salt-susceptible high-yielding varieties clustered together in a 3-D plot, principal component analysis showed marked spatial isolation among the tolerant genotypes. Unlike Pokkali and its derivative FL496, Rahspunjar maintained a higher level of K+ despite high Na+ influx in shoots. The wider genetic distances observed at both phenotypic and genotypic levels suggest the possibility of getting transgressive segregants among the offspring of crosses between Rahspunjar and Gayatri or Swarna Sub1. Similarly, SR 26B, which coped with the stress by diluting the Na+ load by maintaining a higher growth rate, differed from Pokkali or Nona Bokra: these two coped with the stress by regulating the transmission of Na+ from roots to photosynthetically active sites. The F2:3 population derived from Savitri × SR 26B showed wide morpho-physiological diversity for salt tolerance. SR 26B was the most distant genotype from Pokkali in the Saltol QTL region and was salt tolerant despite the absence of Pokkali alleles in this region

    Proton-proton bremsstrahlung below and above pion-threshold: the influence of the Δ\Delta-isobar

    The proton-proton bremsstrahlung is investigated within a coupled-channel model with the Δ\Delta degree of freedom. The model is consistent with the NNNN scattering up to 1 GeV and the γNΔ\gamma N\Delta vertex determined in the study of pion photoproduction reactions. It is found that the Δ\Delta excitation can significantly improve the agreements with the ppppγpp \rightarrow pp\gamma at Elab=280E_{lab}=280 MeV.     Octet magnetic moments and the Coleman-Glashow sum rule violation in the chiral quark model

    Baryon octet magnetic moments when calculated within the chiral quark model, incorporating the orbital angular momentum as well as the quark sea contribution through the Cheng-Li mechanism, not only show improvement over the non relativistic quark model results but also gives a non zero value for the right hand side of Coleman-Glashow sum rule. When effects due to spin-spin forces between constituent quarks as well as `mass adjustments' due to confinement are added, it leads to an excellent fit for the case of p, \Sigma^+, \Xi^o and violation of Coleman-Glashow sum rule, whereas in almost all the other cases the results are within 5% of the data.Comment: 5 RevTeX pages, accepted for publication in PRD(Rapid Communication

    Charged particle production has been measured in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) events over a large range of xx and Q2Q^2 using the ZEUS detector.     D* Production in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA

    This paper presents measurements of D^{*\pm} production in deep inelastic scattering from collisions between 27.5 GeV positrons and 820 GeV protons. The data have been taken with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The decay channel D+(D0Kπ+)π+D^{*+}\to (D^0 \to K^- \pi^+) \pi^+ (+ c.c.) has been used in the study. The e+pe^+p cross section for inclusive D^{*\pm} production with 5<Q2<100GeV25<Q^2<100 GeV^2 and y<0.7y<0.7 is 5.3 \pms 1.0 \pms 0.8 nb in the kinematic region {1.3<pT(D±)<9.01.3<p_T(D^{*\pm})<9.0 GeV and η(D±)<1.5| \eta(D^{*\pm}) |<1.5}. Differential cross sections as functions of p_T(D^{*\pm}), η(D±),W\eta(D^{*\pm}), W and Q2Q^2 are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations based on the photon-gluon fusion production mechanism. After an extrapolation of the cross section to the full kinematic region in p_T(D^{*\pm}) and η\eta(D^{*\pm}), the charm contribution F2ccˉ(x,Q2)F_2^{c\bar{c}}(x,Q^2) to the proton structure function is determined for Bjorken xx between 2 \cdot 104^{-4} and 5 \cdot 103^{-3}.Comment: 17 pages including 4 figure

    Observation of hard scattering in photoproduction events with a large rapidity gap at HERA

    Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5 GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the γp\gamma p centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4 GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets.     Deficiency of Pkc1 activity affects glycerol metabolism in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    In pressProtein kinase C is apparently involved in the control of many cellular systems: the cell wall integrity pathway, the synthesis of ribosomes, the appropriated reallocation of transcription factors under specific stress conditions and also the regulation of N-glycosylation activity. All these observations suggest the existence of additional targets not yet identified. In the context of the control of carbon metabolism, previous data demonstrated that Pkc1 p might play a central role in the control of cellular growth and metabolism in yeast. In particular, it has been suggested that it might be involved in the derepression of genes under glucose-repression by driving an appropriated subcellular localization of transcriptional factors, such as Mig1 p. In this work, we show that pkc1∆ mutant is unable to grow on glycerol because it cannot perform the derepression of GUT1 gene that encodes for glycerol kinase. Additionally, active transport is also partially affected. Using this phenotype, we were able to isolate a new pkc1∆ revertant. We also isolated two transformants identified as the nuclear exportin Msn5 and the histone deacetylase Hos2 extragenic suppressors of this mutation. Based on these results, we postulate that Pkc1 p may be involved in the control of the cellular localization and/or regulation of the activity of nuclear proteins implicated in gene expression.Fundação Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (FUFOP).     Preparação e caracterização de um biocompósito obtido pela mistura de hidreto de titânio com nitrato de cálcio para implantes dentários

    RESUMO Neste trabalho foram realizados estudos sobre a fabricação de um biocompósito à base de titânio para implantes dentários a partir da mistura de pó de hidreto de titânio (92%) com nitrato de cálcio (8% em volume). O pó de hidreto de titânio foi adicionado na solução aquosa de nitrato de cálcio, dissolvido por agitação mecânica, e em seguida os precursores foram misturados e dispersados/homogeneizados por ultrassom. Posteriormente, a mistura foi secada em evaporador rotativo, compactada com 600 MPa à temperatura ambiente, desmoldada e sinterizada em alto vácuo a 1200 oC durante 2 horas. Foi analisada a microestrutrura e fases formadas, as propriedades mecânicas, a rugosidade da superfície, a porosidade aberta, a molhabilidade da superfície e a citotoxicidade do biocompósito. As fases identificadas após a sinterização foram &#945;-Ti e CaTiO3. O limite de resistência em compressão, o módulo de Young (E) e o ângulo de contato do biocompósito diminuíram significativamente com relação ao hidreto de titânio puro sinterizado nas mesmas condições. O limite médio de resistência em compressão do hidreto de titânio foi de 1794,67 MPa e do biocompósito foi de 481,36 MPa. O módulo de Young e o ângulo de contato do hidreto de titânio e do biocompósito foram de aproximadamente 112 GPa e 94 graus, e de 75 GPa e 83 graus, respectivamente. A rugosidade de superfície foi da mesma ordem de grandeza entre os materiais e ficou aproximadamente entre 1,4 e 1,5 µm (Ra) e 1,4 e 1,9 µm (Ra e Sa), medidas com rugosímetro de contato e com microscópio confocal a laser, respectivamente. A porosidade aberta do biocompósito sinterizado foi de aproximadamente três vezes maior do que aquela do hidreto de titânio sinterizado. Nos ensaios de citotoxicidade a porcentagem de células viáveis do biocompósito foi superior àquela do controle negativo e àquela do hidreto de titânio sinterizado

    In deep inelastic neutral current scattering of positrons and protons at the center of mass energy of 300 GeV, we observe, with the ZEUS detector, events with a high energy neutron produced at very small scattering angles with respect to the proton direction. The events constitute a fixed fraction of the deep inelastic, neutral current event sample independent of Bjorken x and Q2 in the range 3 · 10-4 \u3c xBJ \u3c 6 · 10-3 and 10 \u3c Q2 \u3c 100 GeV2
