Emission line taxonomy and the nature of AGN-looking galaxies in the SDSS

Massive spectroscopic surveys like the SDSS have revolutionized the way we study AGN and their relations to the galaxies they live in. A first step in any such study is to define samples of different types of AGN on the basis of emission line ratios. This deceivingly simple step involves decisions on which classification scheme to use and data quality censorship. Galaxies with weak emission lines are often left aside or dealt with separately because one cannot fully classify them onto the standard Star-Forming, Seyfert of LINER categories. This contribution summarizes alternative classification schemes which include this very numerous population. We then study how star-formation histories and physical properties of the hosts vary from class to class, and present compelling evidence that the emission lines in the majority of LINER-like systems in the SDSS are not powered by black-hole accretion. The data are fully consistent with them being galaxies whose old stars provide all the ionizing power needed to explain their line ratios and luminosities. Such retired galaxies deserve a place in the emission line taxonomy.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, Proceedings of IAU Symposium 267, Co-Evolution of Central Black Holes and Galaxie

A lightweight group-key management protocol for secure ad-hoc-network routing

    Get PDF
AbstractSecure routing protocols for ad hoc networks use group keys for authenticating control messages without high energy consumption. A distributed and robust group-key management is, thus, essential. This paper proposes and specifies a protocol for distributing and managing group keys in ad hoc environments based on the Secure Optimized Link State Routing protocol (SOLSR). The proposed protocol manages group keys taking into consideration frequent network partitions/mergers and also reduces the impact of non-authorized users that try to illegitimately obtain the group key to use network resources. The analysis shows that our proposal provides high availability and presents low energy consumption for the two most important group events in ad hoc network: joining-node events and network-partition-merging events. Our protocol reduces both the number of control messages and the energy spent with cryptographic operations by up to three orders of magnitude when compared to contributory group-key agreement algorithms. The proposed protocol provides an efficient key management in a timely manner

The objective of this study was to evaluate the renoprotective effects of Uncaria Tomentosa (cat's claw) on ischemic acute kidney injury induced by renal clamping in rats. The hypoxia and hypoperfusion increase the production of reactive species already present in the inflammatory process. Results showed that the renal function evaluated by creatinine clearance, the urinary excretion of peroxides and malondealdehyde indexes demonstrated that UT induced renoprotection, probably related to its antioxidant activities. This research shows that the effects of tourism in National Parks have positive and negative points, therefore, it aims to compare the management of solid waste generated by tourism between Brazil and Canada and, as specific objectives: a) Identify Public Policies Solid Waste in Protected Areas of each country studied; b) Identify in the studied Parks the factors that influence the generation of Solid Waste from tourism and c) Raise the potential and threats in the management of Solid Waste generated by tourism in National Parks with a focus on two Brazilian parks and two Canadian parks. Using SWOT, the waste management of the four National Parks was compared, based on documental research and a defined semi-structured interview. Qualitatively, the differences by location, structure and resources originated from exploratory and descriptive research. To create special standards, we work with the proportionalities between Parks and the influencing factors of waste generation. The results also revealed that despite the difference in laws between Brazil and Canada, there are problems in both countries, as well as solutions in both that can be structured and implemented between National Parks to improve solid waste management.

Biosurfactants produced by yeasts: fermentation, screening, recovery, purification, characterization, and applications

The demand for biosurfactants (BS) produced by yeast for use in industrial processes and products is increasing. Therefore, there has been an increase in the number of publications related to characterization of surfactant compounds produced by yeasts generally recognized as safe (GRAS), which has enabled their application in several industries, including the pharmaceutical and food industries. However, some of these studies use techniques that are not accurate or are no longer essential because of advancements in new technologies. Given the industrial importance of yeasts and their potential to produce BS, this study reviews the production of BS by this microorganism and the most recent industrial applications of BS. It also critically reviews a wide range of techniques used in screening of BS-producing strains, as well as those used in recovery, purification, and characterization of these surfactant compounds produced by yeasts. This review introduces diverse methodologies that are indispensable for the study of BS produced by yeast in an effort to advance BS design, synthesis, and application and introduces new perspectives in the research of these compounds to overcome the obstacles present in this field. This research was supported by Brazilian agencies Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico do Brasil (CNPq) [grant numbers 312336/2014-4, 423095/2016-1], Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG) [grant number CAG-APQ-03478-16], and Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) [PNPD20131289]
