    Ultrasound Technology Helps Youth Raise Industry-Acceptable Market Animals

    Ultrasound estimates of carcass data have been collected on over 1,900 4-H market hogs, lambs, and steers at fairs in southeast Idaho from 1999 to 2005. The data were collected as part of an educational program to help youth raising animals for the food chain to understand industry acceptability. The results of the data indicate that market hog loin-eye size increased 1.14 inches while backfat thickness decreased by 27%; market lamb ribeye area increased almost 15%; and the number of steers with adequate IMF to reach the USDA Choice quality grade increased 130%

    Life-Skill Development Found in 4-H Animal Judging

    A study was conducted in Idaho to determine the impact of the 4-H animal judging program on the life skills of former participants and how judging influenced their lives. The results of the study show that the judging program has affected the development of animal industry knowledge and is at least moderately influential on the development of communication, decision-making, problem solving, self-discipline, self-motivation, teamwork, and organization. All these skills have been recognized as beneficial life skills associated with workforce preparedness. Over 97% of the judging alumni indicated that the Idaho 4-H judging experience positively influenced their personal success

Brown and Fenner recently showed that, for n≄29n\geq29, the number of edges of a graph GG can be computed from any deck missing 2 cards.     Identifying a sufficient core group for trachoma transmission.

    BackgroundIn many infectious diseases, a core group of individuals plays a disproportionate role in transmission. If these individuals were effectively prevented from transmitting infection, for example with a perfect vaccine, then the disease would disappear in the remainder of the community. No vaccine has yet proven effective against the ocular strains of chlamydia that cause trachoma. However, repeated treatment with oral azithromycin may be able to prevent individuals from effectively transmitting trachoma.Methodology/principal findingsHere we assess several methods for identifying a core group for trachoma, assuming varying degrees of knowledge about the transmission process. We determine the minimal core group from a completely specified model, fitted to results from a large Ethiopian trial. We compare this benchmark to a core group that could actually be identified from information available to trachoma programs. For example, determined from the rate of return of infection in a community after mass treatments, or from the equilibrium prevalence of infection.Conclusions/significanceSufficient groups are relatively easy for programs to identify, but will likely be larger than the theoretical minimum

    Lesson Plan Helps Volunteers Improve Learning Among 4-H Youths in Animal Projects

    Continued development and delivery of animal science programs for 4-H youths is a critical need in all livestock production regions. The large number of 4-H youth programs, their rural locations, and the small number of 4-H Extension professionals make delivery of new curricula challenging. In response, we developed animal science lessons for volunteer leaders. We evaluated the effectiveness of a quality assurance lesson delivered by untrained volunteers on learning among 4-H youths in 32 clubs across Idaho. Survey results indicate improved student learning and provide preliminary evidence that this delivery model can be effective for 4-H participants

    The judging of a market animal at a fair is the highlight of a youth-owned livestock project. Livestock judges are hired to evaluate youth projects at fairs. They are critical ambassadors for agriculture and influence countless youths and adults. Judges must be knowledgeable about current animal evaluation methods that support youth development. The circle of knowledgeable individuals qualified to evaluate animal projects is limited in the Intermountain West, making it difficult to find skilled judges. This necessitates hiring unqualified or untrained judges, limiting the educational experiences for participating youths.     The role of coach education in the development of expertise in coaching

    The coach has a crucial role to play in the furtherance of sporting performance however, unlike the athlete, scant attention has been paid to the development of the expert coach. This thesis investigated methods of coach education, which allowed coaches to develop their practice through the adoption of both structured and unstructured processes. It consists of three different studies, examining coach education, support and development, as perceived by sport coaches. The findings conclude that coaches questioned the effectiveness of formal coach education programmes, the support of their NGBs and the sports specific nature of many of the awards. Coaches progress using a variety of methods but key were the informal Communities of Practice (COP), critical thinking skills, a supportive club environment and a personal desire to develop their knowledge base in a range of areas. Some professions have integrated expertise development into education programmes using a variety of methods. Sport coaching should embrace the examples from these and introduce the concept of long term coach development into the coach education framework

    Direct fuel oxidation alkaline fuel cells:the kinetics of borohydride oxidation

    Alkaline based fuel cells are among the most efficient due to the enhanced kinetics of oxygen reduction in alkaline media. In space applications, they have demonstrated efficiencies near 60%, with the potential to generate electricity with efficiencies at nearly 70%. One of the largest hurdles to overcome in the general uptake of hydrogen fuel cells is the ability to store hydrogen fuel in a form with sufficient energy density to allow for mobile systems to be truly viable. This often means that hydrogen has to be stored at very high pressure (around 70 MPa) in bulky tanks to provide sufficient capacity. Clearly this is not suitable for smaller vehicles or portable systems. Partly to address this, there has been considerable interest in direct oxidation liquid fuelled cells due to the very high specific energy density of liquid fuels. A very compact variant of the liquid fuelled cell which has received little attention is the alkaline dissolved fuel cell where the fuel is dissolved in the electrolyte and the system relies on a selective cathode for efficient operation. Borohydrides present a particularly good option for an alkaline dissolved fuel system, having high energy densities, a low standard potential for the oxidation to borax (an 8 electron process) and good stability in alkaline conditions. A key area in the success of a fuel cell utilizing borohydride is the development of an anode which can make use of the full 8 electron oxidation to borax directly oxidising the borohydride with as little of the hydrolysis reaction occurring as possible. This is in addition to common requirements of high activity, high stability, good electronic conductivity and transport of reactants and products. Here we present investigations into the oxidation of borohydride in alkaline media under various conditions for a selection of candidate materials in different forms using an RDE (rotating disc electrode) based procedure. Results demonstrate that hydrolysis or an indirect oxidation mechanism reduces the coulombic efficiency of the oxidation reaction observed for the materials investigated so far. There is also a significant difference in behaviour between candidate materials. The best performing materials from the RDE studies will be used to develop suitably active and durable functional fuel cell electrodes using scalable processes such as screen printing
