Apparent ferromagnetism in the 'pinwheel' artificial spin ice
Magnetic artificial spin ice provides examples of how competing interactions between magnetic nanoelements can lead to a range of fascinating and unusual phenomena. We examine theoretically a class of spin ice tilings, called pinwheel, for which near degeneracy of spin configuration energies can be achieved. The pinwheel tiling is a simple but crucial variant on the square ice geometry, in which each nanoelement of square ice is rotated some angle about its midpoint. Surprisingly, this rotation leads to an intriguing phase transition; and even though the spins are not parallel to one another, a ferromagnetic phase is found for rotation angles near 45∘. Here, magnetic domains and domain walls are found when viewed in terms of net magnetisation. Moreover, the ferromagnetic behaviour of the system depends on its anisotropy which we can control by array shape and size
Potential alternative feed sources for ruminant feeding from the biodiesel production chain by-products
This study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition, fractionation of nitrogen compounds and carbohydrates, digestibility parameters, gas production kinetics and ruminal fermentation of fruit seed cakes. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with three fruit seed cakes (treatments) and four replications. The cakes were made of seeds of custard apple (Annona squamosa), soursop (Annona muricata) and passion fruit (Passiflora edulis), which were collected in a biodiesel plant. The passion fruit seed cake presented the highest content of dry matter, neutral detergent fibre crude protein (NDFcp), acid detergent fibre (ADF), lignin and total carbohydrates (P<0.05). The custard apple seed cake presented high proportions of crude protein, condensed tannins and digestible energy (P<0.05). The soursop seed cake presented higher values for ether extract and total digestible nutrients (P<0.05). For potential degradability, the authors detected a difference between the custard apple, soursop and passion fruit seed cakes. The total volume of gases was higher for custard apple and soursop seed cakes. Custard apple seed cake presented higher proportions of in vitro degradation parameters (P<0.05). Thus this cake could provide greater nutrient levels when supplied in ruminant diets, followed by soursop seed cake and passion fruit seed cake.

Effects induced by Apis mellifera venom and its components in experimental models of nociceptive and inflammatory pain
AbstractThe effects induced by Apis mellifera venom (AMV), melittin-free AMV, fraction with molecular mass < 10 kDa (F<10) or melittin in nociceptive and inflammatory pain models in mice were investigated. Subcutaneous administration of AMV (2, 4 or 6 mg/kg) or melittin-free AMV (1, 2 or 4 mg/kg) into the dorsum of mice inhibited both phases of formaldehyde-induced nociception. However, F<10 (2, 4 or 6 mg/kg) or melittin (2 or 3 mg/kg) inhibited only the second phase. AMV (4 or 6 mg/kg), but not F<10, melittin-free AMV or melittin, induced antinociception in the hot-plate model. Paw injection of AMV (0.05 or 0.10 mg), F<10 (0.05 or 0.1 mg) or melittin (0.025 or 0.050 mg) induced a nociceptive response. In spite of inducing nociception after paw injection, scorpion (Tityus serrulatus) or snake (Bothrops jararaca) venom injected into the dorsum of mice did not inhibit formaldehyde-induced nociception. In addition, AMV (6 mg/kg), but not F<10 (6 mg/kg) or melittin (3 mg/kg), inhibited formaldehyde paw oedema. Concluding, AMV, F<10 and melittin induce two contrasting effects: nociception and antinociception. AMV antinociception involves the action of different components and does not result from non-specific activation of endogenous antinociceptive mechanisms activated by exposure to noxious stimuli
Laser printing of silver-based micro-wires in ZrO2 substrate for smart implant applications
Smart implants are endowed with functions of sensing, actuating and control to solve problems that may arise
during their use. The assembly of these functions along the implant surface is still a challenge. However, with the
advent of 3D printing, it is possible to print on implants’ surface, communication channels or micro-antennas or
even sensoric/actuating areas. Hence, a positive impact on the long-term performance of the implants (including
hip, dental and knee) may be expected with the proposed approach. Despite titanium and Ti6Al4V titanium alloy
are the standard choice for implants fabrication, 3Y-TZP (tetragonal 3% mol yttria-stabilized zirconia) has
emerged as a ceramic material suitable to overcome titanium alloy problems, due to its numerous advantages. In
this sense, this work is concerned with the ability of printing silver-based communication system in zirconia
substrates by using laser technology. For this purpose, micro-cavities were created on ZrO2 substrate, where the
silver powder was placed and sintered into them. Through the laser approach, silver-based wires with great
quality and low resistivity values were achieved. The flexural strength results showed that the mechanical resistance of zirconia disks was affected by laser micro-wire printing, which decreased as the laser passage was
performed. Based on the results, it is believed that the proposed approach seems to be effective for the manufacturing of implants with intrinsic capacities, useful for smart implant applications. This work has been supported by FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e
