The impact of shifting cultivation in the forestry ecosystems of timor-leste
Every year thousands of hectares of forest are destructed as a result of the practice of swidden agriculture, shifting cultivation or "slush and burn" causing changes in forest ecosystems. In Timor- Leste shifting cultivation is still practiced nowadays as a form of subsistence agriculture.
Swidden agriculture is characterized by slash and burn clearing, by a rotation of fields rather than of
crops, and by short periods of cropping (1-3 years) alternating with long fallow periods.
Based on the characterization of shifting cultivation in two Sucos of Bobonaro district, a reflection is
made on the impact of this practice in the sustainable development of forest ecosystems of Timor-
Leste.
Primary data collection was performed using a questionnaire survey of farmers practicing shifting cultivation. The questionnaire characterized shifting cultivation, and asked farmers’ opinion on slash and burning of forest areas and on the importance of forests.
According to the results obtained, in most situations the existing vegetation before the slash was composed of dense forest, the slash is made by the family group, the majority of farmers have been doing the “slush and burn” for more than ten years and the size of the plots where slash is made is less than 2 hectares. The materials resulting from the slash are used for firewood, building materials and fencing. The burning of vegetable residues is done before planting and soil preparation and sowing is done with a lever. Land and forest, despite having an individual use, have a tenure regime of ownership and access in which its nature of common pool good prevails. Every year thousands of hectares of forest are destructed as a result of the practice of swidden agriculture, shifting cultivation or "slush and burn" causing changes in forest ecosystems. In Timor-Leste shifting cultivation is still practiced nowadays as a form of subsistence agriculture
Empowering financial literacy - impact study
The purpose of this study is to test the impact of “Finanças para Todos” progammeon
participants’ financial literacy levels. Surveys based on OECD/INFE were used to measure
financial literacy levels before and after attending the sessions. Besides the financial literacy
score and its components, financial well-being and resilience indicators were calculated and
analysed. T-Tests showed that the variation in scores had statistical significance for financial
literacy and financial resilience. Conclusions drawn enable us to make the case for short-time
duration financial education programmes, lectured on business universities by students, as an
effective and economic way to increase financial literacy among Portuguese population. At the
end, a personal reflection is made on the experience in this stud~y
THE ROLE OF ECONOMIC AND SOCIOCULTURAL FUNCTIONS OF ANIMAL PRODUCTION IN WELLBEING AND DEVELOPMENT OF RURAL COMMUNITIES OF TIMOR-LESTE
Livestock production in Timor-Leste is predominantly familiar being chickens, pigs, goats, cattle, horses, buffaloes and sheep the main species.
The livestock species play very important economic and sociocultural roles for the well-being of rural households, such as food supply, source of income, asset saving, source of employment, soil fertility, livelihoods, transport, agricultural traction, agricultural diversification and sustainable agricultural production.
The aim of this work was to identify and characterize the different roles that livestock and livestock species play in rural communities of Timor-Leste, highlighting the importance of animal production for the wellbeing and rural development, and relate the functions performed by livestock production with economic, social and cultural attributes of the communities. The data used in this study were collected in 2011 through a questionnaire survey in three rural communities in the district of Bobonaro -mountain area, irrigation plain and coastal zone, and were complemented with secondary dat
Chinese Coins In Copper Based Alloys: Elemental And Microstructural Characterization
The Chinese cast coin collection from the CCCM’s Museum in Lisbon (Portugal) was accessible for analytical and metallographic characterization. In spite of the considerable number of similar items that populate museums and private collectors in Europe and North America, studies carried out in the western world are very scarce.
Firstly, elemental characterization by EDXRF spectrometry was performed on 380 copper-based coins, revealing different types of alloys (coppers, bronzes and brasses) with variable alloy elemental composition. In bronze coins one of the main constituents was lead, which sometimes presented considerable content variations between the obverse and reverse of the same coin. Brass coins were found to be rich in zinc (<63 wt.%), but often presented traces or small contents of lead, tin, antimony, iron and arsenic.
Metallographic techniques used in the study of 109 coins microstructures could confirm the production process consistency (sand casting), and establish a parallel between the elemental contents (obtained by micro-EDXRF) and the present metallic phases (observed by OM and SEM, and analyzed by SEM-EDS and micro-XRD), resorting to equilibrium phase diagrams.
A comparison between the corrosion susceptibility of metallic phases in bronze coins showed preferential transglobular corrosion of lead-rich globules, and also that lead and/or tin corrosion by-products are often deposited at the surface of these coins. When considering brass coins, the most common corrosion process was dezincification. Also, the presence of some minor elements was found to greatly influence the corrosion susceptibility, demoting (e.g., Fe) or promoting (e.g., Sn, Sb and As) the corrosion resistance of the phases in which these elements are in higher concentration.
The obtained results are an added value to the characterization of similar alloys, namely through the co-relation between their elemental contents and the current micro-constituents. Also, the corrosion susceptibilities in bronze and brass metallic phases can contribute to an improved macroscopic diagnose for conservation purposes in similar items.
All the results obtained during this study support the coins authenticity
adquiridas, a aproximação a novas oportunidades e o desenvolvimento

China’s images in the State of the Union Address, 1973-2020
This paper discusses how China was represented in the State of The Union Address between 1973 and 2020. The hypothesis is that China’s image has undergone qualitative changes and that shifting the party in the White House is not a sufficient condition to transform this representation. It is employed the content analysis to map the frequency of the word ‘China’ and to analyze the discursive context of its apparition. The mentions are evaluated according to three variables: axiology (positive, negative, or mixed), discursive focus (direct or indirect), and frequency of mentions. Four discursive paradigms, or periods in which the image was qualitatively stable, are identified and discussed. The analysis showed that external shocks have an important impact on changing China’s image and that these representations usually signalize actual priorities of US foreign policy
