    Seasonal Variability of the Tyrrhenian Sea Surface Geostrophic Circulation as Assessed by Altimeter Data

    AbstractNew insights into the structure and variability of the Tyrrhenian Sea's surface circulation are obtained through the analysis of a very long series of altimetric observations (1993–2010). In late winter and part of spring, a consistent mean flow is individuated in the eastern Tyrrhenian Sea, formed by a stream of Atlantic water that meanders around four anticyclonic structures located along the Italian coast, which have smaller cyclonic companions offshore. The signatures of these vortices are also found in images of chlorophyll and sea surface temperature, as well as in modeling results, both from a high-resolution operational model of the Tyrrhenian Sea's circulation and from a dedicated numerical simulation. Analysis of the energy exchange between eddies and mean flow, together with numerical evidence, suggests that this winter–spring circulation pattern may result from basin-scale instability of the Atlantic stream. In summer, the dynamic is dominated by a well-known dipole located to the east of the Bonifacio Strait. However, in the eastern part of the basin, an anticyclonic cell is also found, probably driven by the negative wind stress curl present in summer in this region. The cell encompasses two anticyclonic vortices located in the areas of the Vavilov and Marsili Seamounts. A multichannel singular spectral analysis of the altimetric time series reveals that, besides the expected, dominant seasonal mode, a significant low-frequency mode of variability is also present. This mode has a period of about six years and is mostly localized in the western part of the basin

    A Study of the \eta \pi^{0} Spectrum and Search for a J^{PC} = 1^{-+} Exotic Meson

    A partial wave analysis (PWA) of the of the ηπ0\eta \pi ^0 system (where ηγγ\eta \to \gamma \gamma) produced in the charge exchange reaction πpηπ0n\pi ^-p\to \eta \pi ^0n at an incident momentum of 18 GeV/c/c is presented as a function of ηπ0{\eta \pi ^0} invariant mass, mηπ0m_{\eta\pi^0}, and momentum transfer squared, tπηπt_{\pi^{-}\to\eta\pi}, from the incident π\pi^- to the outgoing ηπ0{\eta\pi ^0} system. SS, PP and DD waves were included in the PWA. The a0(980)a_0(980) and a2(1320)a_2(1320) states are clearly observed in the overall ηπ0{\eta\pi ^0} effective mass distribution as well as in the amplitudes associated with SS wave and DD waves respectively after partial wave decomposition. The observed distributions in moments (averages of spherical harmonics) were compared to the results from the PWA and the two are consistent. The distribution in tπηπt_{\pi^{-}\to\eta\pi} for individual DD waves associated with natural and unnatural parity exchange in the tt-channel are consistent with Regge phenomenology. Of particular interest in this study is the PP wave since this leads to an exotic JPC=1+J^{PC}=1^{-+} for the ηπ\eta \pi system. A PP wave is present in the data, however attempts to describe the mass dependence of the amplitude and phase motion with respect to the DD wave as a Breit-Wigner resonance are problematic. This has implications regarding the existence of a reported exotic JPC=1+J^{PC} = 1^{-+} meson decaying into ηπ0\eta \pi^0 with a mass near 1.4 GeV/c2/c^2.Comment: 19 pages, 29 figures, to appear in Phys.     Exotic Meson Production in the f1(1285)πf_{1}(1285)\pi^{-} System observed in the Reaction πpηπ+ππp\pi^{-} p \to \eta\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{-} p at 18 GeV/c

    This letter reports results from the partial wave analysis of the πππ+η\pi^{-}\pi^{-}\pi^{+}\eta final state in πp\pi^{-}p collisions at 18GeV/c. Strong evidence is observed for production of two mesons with exotic quantum numbers of spin, parity and charge conjugation, JPC=1+J^{PC} = 1^{-+} in the decay channel f1(1285)πf_{1}(1285)\pi^{-}. The mass M=1709±24±41M = 1709 \pm 24 \pm 41 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=403±80±115\Gamma = 403 \pm 80 \pm 115 MeV/c^2 of the first state are consistent with the parameters of the previously observed π1(1600)\pi_{1}(1600). The second resonance with mass M=2001±30±92M = 2001 \pm 30 \pm 92 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=333±52±49\Gamma = 333 \pm 52 \pm 49 MeV/c^2 agrees very well with predictions from theoretical models. In addition, the presence of π2(1900)\pi_{2}(1900) is confirmed with mass M=2003±88±148M = 2003 \pm 88 \pm 148 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=306±132±121\Gamma = 306 \pm 132 \pm 121 MeV/c^2 and a new state, a1(2096)a_{1}(2096), is observed with mass M=2096±17±121M = 2096 \pm 17 \pm 121 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=451±41±81\Gamma = 451 \pm 41 \pm 81 MeV/c^2. The decay properties of these last two states are consistent with flux tube model predictions for hybrid mesons with non-exotic quantum numbers

    Results are presented on a partial wave analysis of the Omega Eta final state produced in Pi- Proton interactions at 18 GeVc where Omega -> Pi+ Pi- Pi0, Pi0 -> 2 Gammas, and Eta -> 2 Gammas. We observe the previously unreported decay mode Omega(1650) -> Omega Eta and a new 1(+-) meson state h1(1595) with a mass M=1594(15)(+10)(-60) MeV/c^2 and a width Gamma=384(60)(+70)(-100) MeV/c^2.     Observation of Pseudoscalar and Axial Vector Resonances in pi- p -> K+ K- pi0 n at 18 GeV

    A new measurement of the reaction pi- p -> K+ K- pi0 n has been made at a beam energy of 18 GeV. A partial wave analysis of the K+ K- pi0 system shows evidence for three pseudoscalar resonances, eta(1295), eta(1416), and eta(1485), as well as two axial vectors, f1(1285), and f1(1420). Their observed masses, widths and decay properties are reported.     Measurement of hadronic cross section and preliminary results on the pion form factor using the radiative return at DAPHNE

    In the fixed energy environment of the e+ee^{+}e^{-} collider DAΦ\PhiNE, KLOE can measure the cross section of the process e+ee^{+}e^{-} \to hadrons as a function of the hadronic system energy using the radiative return. At energies below 1 GeV, e+eρπ+πe^{+}e^{-} \to \rho \to \pi^{+}\pi^{-} is the dominating hadronic process.     Measurement of the leptonic decay widths of the phi-meson with the KLOE detector

    The phi-meson leptonic widths, Gee and Gmm, are obtained, respectively, from the e+e- forward-backward asymmetry and the muon cross section around the phi-mass energy. We find Gee=1.32⊕0.05⊕0.03 kev and sqrt(GeeGmm)= 1.320⊕0.018⊕0.017 kev. These results, compatible with Gee=Gmm, provide a precise test of lepton universality. Combining the two results gives G_lept=1.320⊕0.023 kev.Comment: 10 pages and 8 figures to be submitted to Phys.Lett.

    We have searched for the C-violating decay eta to gamma gamma gamma in a sample of ~ 18 million eta mesons produced in phi to eta gamma decays, collected with the KLOE detector at the Frascati phi-factory DAFNE.     Recently it has been demonstrated that particle factories, such as DAPHNE and PEP-II, operating at fixed center-of-mass energies, are able to measure hadronic cross sections as a function of the hadronic system energy using the raditive return. This paper is an experimental overview of the progress in this aera. Preliminary results from KLOE for the process e+e- -> \rho \gamma -> \pi+\pi-\gamma and a fit to the pion form factor are presented.
