Through a Participatory Cinema Workshop for Mexican children and teenagers living from vulnerable contexts, and with the aim to introduce them to the audiovisual practice as a new discursive tool, it was possible to see how did they used the audiovisual language and made it of their own to communicate through cameras and sound recorders. Under the participatory mode, in which all its members where free to explore and experiment according to their interests and curiosity, children from diverse and complex contexts, transformed themselves into audiovisual creators, and with their new technical and narrative knowledges, they told the stories that are important to them. The camera, as a meeting point between my observer eyes and guide of the Workshop, and the eyes of the young filmmakers, wasthe medium to connect and identify ourselves as part of a group. The movies, experiences and learnings show this process through a documentary (La Maroma. A workshop filled with stories, 2022). From a 'multiperspective camera' that unified the different viewpoints that gathered through the Participatory Cinema Workshop, they were integrated to a creative and experimental process where the camera, the sound recorder, the clapper, and the costumes enabled the children’s discourses

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a well-documented negative impact on the mental health and wellbeing of frontline healthcare workers (HCWs). Whilst no research has to date been carried out to explore the challenges experienced by the families of HCWs, some previous research has been conducted with military families, demonstrating that family members of deployed military personnel may also be affected seriously and negatively. Objectives: This study aimed to explore the experiences, views, and mental health impact on frontline HCWs' families during the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK and what support the families of frontline HCWs may need. Method: Close family members and friends of HCWs were interviewed. Transcripts were analysed in line with the principles of reflexive thematic analysis. Results: We completed fourteen interviews with three siblings, one mother, one friend, and nine spouses of HCWs. Family members were highly motivated to support healthcare workers and felt an intense sense of pride in their work. However, they also experienced increased domestic responsibilities and emotional burden due to anxiety about their loved ones' work. The fact that sacrifices made by family members were not noticed by society, the anxiety they felt about their family's physical health, the impact of hearing about traumatic experiences, and the failure of healthcare organisations to meet the needs of the HCWs all negatively affected the family members. Conclusions: We have an ethical responsibility to attend to the experiences and needs of the families of healthcare professionals. This study emphasises the experiences and needs of family members of healthcare professionals, which have hitherto been missing from the literature. Further research is needed to hear from more parents, siblings and friends, partners in same sex relationships, as well as children of HCWs, to explore the variety of family members and supporters' experiences more fully. HIGHLIGHTS: • COVID19 has impacted families of HCWs as well as workers themselves. They have experienced more anxiety, increased practical burden, significant physical health risks and been exposed vicariously to workers' traumatic experiences. We must ensure HCW families are better supported

Are binge drinking disparities by sexual identity lower in U.S. states with nondiscrimination statutes that include sexual orientation?

Purpose Studies examining binge drinking disparities by sexual identity focus on intra- and inter-personal minority stressors experienced by lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) populations. State-level statutes are powerful tools that can reduce health disparities. We examined how state-level nondiscrimination statutes that include sexual orientation as a protected ground (i.e., inclusive statutes) are associated with binge drinking disparities between LGB and straight adults. Methods We combined data from the 2015-2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), the Movement Advancement Project (MAP), and administrative data sources for information on binge drinking, sexual identity, nondiscrimination statutes, and individual and state-level factors. We included an interaction term in the logistic regression models to test whether inclusive nondiscrimination statutes modify the association between sexual identity and binge drinking. Results Inclusive statutes modified the association between sexual identity and binge drinking among women, but not men. In states without inclusive statutes, the odds of binge drinking among lesbian [1.71 (95%CI: 1.27–2.31)] and bisexual [1.83 (95% CI: 1.54–2.17)] women were significantly higher compared with straight women. In states with inclusive statutes, the odds of binge drinking comparing lesbian and straight women were not significantly different [1.19 (95% CI: 0.92–1.53)]. The odds ratio for binge drinking comparing bisexual and straight women was 26.8% lower in states with [1.34 (95% CI: 1.13–1.60)] versus states without inclusive statutes. Conclusions The enactment of nondiscrimination statutes inclusive of sexual orientation at the state-level are associated with narrower binge drinking disparities between lesbian, bisexual, and straight women

A separated vortex ring underlies the flight of the dandelion

Wind-dispersed plants have evolved ingenious ways to lift their seeds1,2. The common dandelion uses a bundle of drag-enhancing bristles (the pappus) that helps to keep their seeds aloft. This passive flight mechanism is highly effective, enabling seed dispersal over formidable distances3,4; however, the physics underpinning pappus-mediated flight remains unresolved. Here we visualized the flow around dandelion seeds, uncovering an extraordinary type of vortex. This vortex is a ring of recirculating fluid, which is detached owing to the flow passing through the pappus. We hypothesized that the circular disk-like geometry and the porosity of the pappus are the key design features that enable the formation of the separated vortex ring. The porosity gradient was surveyed using microfabricated disks, and a disk with a similar porosity was found to be able to recapitulate the flow behaviour of the pappus. The porosity of the dandelion pappus appears to be tuned precisely to stabilize the vortex, while maximizing aerodynamic loading and minimizing material requirements. The discovery of the separated vortex ring provides evidence of the existence of a new class of fluid behaviour around fluid-immersed bodies that may underlie locomotion, weight reduction and particle retention in biological and manmade structures

Between seas and continents: aspects of the scientific career of Hermann Von Ihering, 1850-1930

This paper covers some periods in Hermann von Ihering’s scientific trajectory: his training in zoology in Germany and Naples, his international activities based in Brazil, and his return to Germany. It deals with aspects of the formulation of his theories on land bridges. It focuses on the network of contacts he maintained with German émigrés like himself, and primarily with Florentino Ameghino, which allowed him to interact in international scientific circles. It mentions excerpts of his letters and his publications in the periods when he began corresponding with Ameghino (1890), when he travelled to Europe in search of support for his theories (1907), and when he published his book on the history of the Atlantic Ocean (1927).Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse
