    The economics of on-farm rice drying in Arkansas

    Globally, rice producers are faced with the temporal problem of deciding the optimal time to harvest rice. When harvested, paddy rice is typically at a harvest moisture content (HMC) between 15% and 22% and subsequently dried by the mill to a moisture content (MC) of 12.5%. Riceland Foods Inc., the largest miller of rice in the world, uses a stair-step pricing model to charge farmers to dry, which can complicate the timing of harvest as producers try to balance the tradeoff of minimizing drying costs by waiting to harvest at lower HMC vs. maintaining higher rice quality typically observed when harvesting at higher HMC. This study estimates the costs of on-farm drying as an alternative to commercial drying. This study estimates the total fixed and operating costs using current building, operating, insurance, and financing costs to establish and run an on-farm rice drying and storage facility with capacities between 1,750 and 7,000 m3 for varying farm sizes (acres grown and yield observed), while drying from a simulated HMC range of 16% to 23%. A cost/benefit analysis compares on-farm operating costs to the current Riceland drying costs. This study finds an average savings of $16.38/ton within the simulated HMC range once payback has occurred. Payback periods when drying at full capacity ranged from 7.52 to 12.26 years, where the larger capacity systems had shorter payback periods compared to the smaller systems. The results of this study can provide rice farmers with important information when considering on-farm drying and storage systems in the Mississippi Delta region

    Willingness-to-Pay for Halal and Branded Poultry in Northern Mozambique

    While price typically drives consumers’ food-purchasing decisions in low-income countries, religious attributes associated with food production and corporate branding could influence buying patterns. In Mozambique, more than 46% of people were living below the poverty line of ($0.31 USD) per day in 2018. That being said, in the Nampula Province (the location of this study), which is the second poorest province in the country, over 25% of the population is Muslim and may be willing-to-pay (WTP) a premium for Halal meat products to uphold Islamic beliefs. Like many parts of sub-Saharan Africa, poultry is the fastest-growing source of protein. Since large-scale domestic poultry industries are relatively new in Mozambique, brand loyalty is a new concept that has not been empirically analyzed before in the literature. In this study, we surveyed 312 consumers in Nampula, Mozambique, using a choice-based modeling approach to estimate if consumers were WTP for chicken that was slaughtered according to Halal laws and chicken which was branded by New Horizons (the largest chicken producer in Nampula). Results from the small sample in this study indicated that even in low-income countries like Mozambique, consumers are WTP a premium for branding. Specifically, Muslim consumers were WTP a premium for Halal-produced meat with branding. While non-Muslims did associate Halal poultry with being safer (69%) and of better quality (64%), but they were not found to be WTP a premium for these attributes

    A systematic review and meta-analysis of the direct effects of nutrients on corals

    Chronic exposure of coral reefs to elevated nutrient conditions can modify the performance of the coral holobiont and shift the competitive interactions of reef organisms. Many studies have nowquantified the links between nutrients and coral performance, but fewhave translated these studies to directly address coastal water quality standards. To address this management need, we conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed studies, public reports, and gray literature that examined the impacts of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN: nitrate, nitrite, and ammonium) and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP: phosphate) on scleractinian corals. The systematic review resulted in 47 studies with comparable data on coral holobiont responses to nutrients: symbiont density, chlorophyll α (chl-α) concentration, photosynthesis, photosynthetic efficiency, growth, calcification, adult survival, juvenile survival, and fertilization. Mixed-effects meta-regression meta-analyses were used to determine the magnitude of the positive or negative effects of DIN and DIP on coral responses. Zooxanthellae density (DIN & DIP), chl-α concentration (DIN), photosynthetic rate (DIN), and growth (DIP) all exhibited positive responses to nutrient addition; maximum quantum yield (DIP), growth (DIN), larval survival (DIN), and fertilization (DIN) exhibited negative responses. In lieu of developing specific thresholds for the management of nutrients as a stressor on coral reefs, we highlight important inflection points in the magnitude and direction of the effects of inorganic nutrients and identify trends among coral responses. The responses of corals to nutrients are complex, warranting conservative guidelines for elevated nutrient concentrations on coral reefs

    Weather, disease, and wheat breeding effects on Kansas wheat varietal yields, 1985 to 2011.

    Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yields in Kansas have increased due to wheat breeding and improved agronomic practices, but are subject to climate and disease challenges. The objective of this research is to quantify the impact of weather, disease, and genetic improvement on wheat yields of varieties grown in 11 locations in Kansas from 1985 to 2011. Wheat variety yield data from Kansas performance tests were matched with comprehensive location-specific disease and weather data, including seasonal precipitation, monthly air temperature, air temperature and solar radiation around anthesis, and vapor pressure deficit (VPD). The results show that wheat breeding programs increased yield by 34 kg ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹. From 1985 through 2011, wheat breeding increased average wheat yields by 917 kg ha⁻¹, or 27% of total yield. Weather was found to have a large impact on wheat yields. Simulations demonstrated that a 1°C increase in projected mean temperature was associated with a decrease in wheat yields of 715 kg ha⁻¹, or 21%. Weather, diseases, and genetics all had significant impacts on wheat yields in 11 locations in Kansas during 1985 to 2011

    Gal4 turnover and transcription activation

    Growing evidence supports the notion that proteasome-mediated destruction of transcriptional activators can be intimately coupled to their function. Recently, Nalley et al. challenged this view by reporting that the prototypical yeast activator Gal4 does not dynamically associate with chromatin, but rather 'locks in' to stable promoter complexes that are resistant to competition. Here we present evidence that the assay used to reach this conclusion is unsuitable, and that promoter-bound, active Gal4 is indeed susceptible to competition in vivo. Our data challenge the key evidence that Nalley et al. used to reach their conclusion, and indicate that Gal4 functions in vivo within the context of dynamic promoter complexes
