Abstract Purpose: comparison of electromyographic activity of quadriceps muscle in persons with unilateral traumatic transtibial amputation using patellar tendon bearing supracondylar endoskeletal prosthesis with the unaffected limb in weight bearing positions. Method: 30 individuals  aged 18-60 years were assessed using surface electromyography with functional level K3 according to K-level functional assessment scale to compare the activity of quadriceps of affected side using patellar tendon bearing supracondylar endoskeletal prosthesis with the unaffected side. The data was analysed using paired t-test. Result:  There was a significant difference in the activity of VMO and VLO muscles of the quadriceps in high sitting positions. There was also a significant difference in the activity of VMO muscle in single limb stance and bipedal stance. However, there was no significant difference between the activity of VLO muscle in bipedal stance but there was reduced activity of VLO muscle in the prosthetic limb in single limb stance. Conclusion: The quadriceps activity was reduced in the affected limb in high sitting position, single  limb stance and bipedal stance. However, no difference in the muscle activity was noted in VLO muscle in bipedal stance. Keywords: trans tibial amputation, patellar tendon bearing supracondylar prosthetis, surface electromyography.&nbsp

    Ayurvedic perspective of Cosmetology

    Get PDF
Cosmetology deals with various aspect of beauty. Beauty is the quality of being physically attractive, the qualities in a person or a thing that give pleasure to the senses or the mind. It is the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit. Beauty is the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as shape, colour, sound, etc.), a meaningful design or pattern, or something else. It pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight. Beauty of person gives perceptual experience of pleasure or satisfaction. According to Ayurveda, the concept of beauty includes physical, mental, social and spiritual elements. Ayurveda is the science of health care and healing, works on four levels body, Breath, mind and spirit. When these are in perfect harmony, a person radiates with inner and outer beauty. In fact, the concept of beauty and cosmetics is as old as mankind and civilization. Ama (toxic materials) inside our body make a person ugly and diseased and Sodhana i.e. Panchakarma (purification) is the best therapeutic intervention to eliminate body toxins. Being Ayurveda as a life science and tradition of India, soon India will be the global cosmetic industry’s capital because of advantages of Ayurveda and Ayurvedic medicines

Ballistic damage in hybrid composite laminates

Ballistic damage of hybrid woven-fabric composites made of plain-weave E-glass-fabric/epoxy and 8H satin-weave T300 carbon-fabric/epoxy is studied using a combination of experimental tests, microstructural studies and finite-element (FE) analysis. Ballistic tests were conducted with a single-stage gas gun. Fibre damage and delamination were observed to be dominating failure modes. A ply-level FE model was developed, with a fabric-reinforced ply modelled as a homogeneous orthotropic material with capacity to sustain progressive stiffness degradation due to fibre/matrix cracking, fibre breaking and plastic deformation under shear loading. Simulated damage patterns on the front and back faces of fabric-reinforced composite plates provided an insight into their damage mechanisms under ballistic loading

The evolution of the digital payments : the past, present and future of digital payments

Thesis: S.M. in Engineering and Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, 2016.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 37-39).The past couple of years, we have observed the rise of the Digital Wallet, a potentially game changing technology application in the financial industry. Digital Wallets allow consumers to pay for purchases through digital devices, and the technology has created a battle among payment networks, banks and technology firms. In this paper, we analyse how the Digital Wallet is impacting the technology space, including the level of disruptiveness and future potential. We have two hypotheses regarding Digital Wallets: H1: The Digital Wallet is disrupting the credit card network. H2. The Digital Wallet is disrupting the physical plastic card.by Vaibhav Naik.S.M. in Engineering and Managemen

Fuzzy C-Means Clustering Approach to Design a Warehouse Layout

    Get PDF
Allocation of products in a warehouse is done by various storage policies. These are broadly classified into three main categories: dedicated storage, randomized storage, and class-based storage. In dedicated storage policy a product is assigned a designated slot while in random storage policy incoming product is randomly assigned a storage location close to the input/output point. Finally, the class-based storage is a mixed policy where products are randomly assigned within their fixed class. Dedicated storage policy is most commonly used in practice. While designing large warehouse layout, the product information in terms of throughput and storage level is either uncertain or is not available to the warehouse designer. Hence it is not possible to locate products on the basis of the throughput to storage ratio method used in the above mentioned storage location policies. To take care of this uncertainty in product data we propose a fuzzy C-means clustering (FCM) approach. This research is mainly directed to improve the efficiency (distance or time traveled) by designing a fuzzy logic based warehouse with large number of products. The proposed approach looks for similarity in the product data to form clusters. The obtained clusters can be directly utilized to develop the warehouse layout. Further, it is investigated if the FCM approach can take into account other factors such as product size, similarity and/or characteristics to generate layouts which are not only efficient in terms of reducing distance traveled to store/retrieve products but are effective in terms of retrieval time, space utilization and/or better material control

Fever with rash is one of the most common causes of referral to a dermatologist. A plethora of conditions need to be considered in the differential diagnosis. They may be broadly classified into infectious causes, drug reactions, and autoimmune disorders. Here we present a rare case of rickettsial fever with cardiac involvement in an elderly male patient with no comorbidities

Production of first and second generation biofuels: A comprehensive review

    No full text
Sustainable economic and industrial growth requires safe, sustainable resources of energy. For the future re-arrangement of a sustainable economy to biological raw materials, completely new approaches in research and development, production, and economy are necessary. The 'first-generation' biofuels appear unsustainable because of the potential stress that their production places on food commodities. For organic chemicals and materials these needs to follow a biorefinery model under environmentally sustainable conditions. Where these operate at present, their product range is largely limited to simple materials (i.e. cellulose, ethanol, and biofuels). Second generation biorefineries need to build on the need for sustainable chemical products through modern and proven green chemical technologies such as bioprocessing including pyrolysis, Fisher Tropsch, and other catalytic processes in order to make more complex molecules and materials on which a future sustainable society will be based. This review focus on cost effective technologies and the processes to convert biomass into useful liquid biofuels and bioproducts, with particular focus on some biorefinery concepts based on different feedstocks aiming at the integral utilization of these feedstocks for the production of value added chemicals.First generation biofuel Second generation biofuel Biorefinery Biomass Bio-oil
