“The Rise and Demise of PATCO” Reconstructed
[Excerpt] In his article The Rise and Demise of PATCO (Northrup 1984), Herbert Northrup presents a narrow and misleading explanation of the ill-fated air traffic controllers\u27 strike of 1981. Northrup\u27s thesis is that the goal of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) strike was to establish the right to bargain over wages within a private sector framework. He attributes the failure of the strike to the union\u27s inept leadership and praises the Reagan administration for its firm response to the challenge presented by PATCO.
Although most of the facts he reports are accurate, Northrup omits crucial information regarding the management style of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the internal dynamics of PATCO. Based on this additional information, we will argue that PATCO\u27S primary goal was to address the work-related problems of the rank-and-file specifically by reducing the work week and improving the retirement system; that the primary cause of the strike was rank-and- file frustration with autocratic management; and that the Reagan administration joined forces with career FAA managers to destroy PATCO without giving sufficient consideration to less drastic alternatives

The world-wide spread of journalism convergence
Convergence is a likely destination for news media in many parts of the world, though the duration of the journey will vary from country to country. This paper defines convergence as well as it is possible to do so, traces its spread around the world, and describes some of the most common business models. It looks at the forces driving convergence, and factors common to the most successful converged operations. The paper also describes the uncertain scenario in Australia now the Howard government has announced plans to change media ownership laws. It ends with discussion about changes in curricula at journalism programs in the United States in the light of the spread of convergence.<br /
A Closer Look at the Global Management of Spina Bifida: The Implementation of Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy in the Treatment of Spina Bifida-Related Hydrocephalus in Africa
Spina bifida, specifically myelomeningocele, is a debilitating neural tube defect that affects patients and families throughout the world. Traditional management and treatment methods are described, followed by an explanation of why this is often inadequate in providing care for those in impoverished areas of the world, including many regions of Africa. Endoscopic third ventriculostomy is proposed as a promising alternative to traditional methods for treating hydrocephalus, an often associated condition, and the implementation of this treatment method in Africa is explored. In order to relieve Africa of the burden of spina bifida-related hydrocephalus and improve global management of spina bifida, it is imperative that the paucity of neurosurgeons in Africa be addressed and successful models for training be expanded
Novel Reconstruction mechanisms: A comparison between group-III-nitrides and "traditional" III-V-semiconductors
We have studied the driving forces governing reconstructions on polar GaN
surfaces employing first-principles total-energy calculations. Our results
reveal properties not observed for other semiconductors, as for example a
strong tendency to stabilize Ga-rich surfaces. This mechanism is shown to have
important consequences on various surface properties: Novel and hitherto
unexpected structures are stable, surfaces may become metallic although GaN is
a wide-bandgap semiconductor, and the surface energy is significantly higher
than for other semiconductors. We explain these features in terms of the small
lattice constant of GaN and the unique bond strength of nitrogen molecules.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure
Thermal performance evaluation of the Northrop model NSC-01-0732 concentrating solar collector array at outdoor conditions
The thermal efficiency of the concentrating, tracking solar collector was tested after ten months of operation at the Marshall Space Flight Center solar house. The test procedures and results are presented
