    Flame retardant property of flax fabrics coated by extracellular polymeric substances recovered from both activated sludge and aerobic granular sludge

    In this research, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), such as EPSflocs and EPSgranules, were successfully extracted from activated and aerobic granular sludge, respectively, and tested as bio-based flame retardant materials. Flax fabric was coated by the biopolymeric substances and its flammability was evaluated based on a vertical burning test defined in US Federal Aviation Regulation. Both EPSflocs and EPSgranules coated flax fabrics achieved the self-extinguishment due to effective char formation. In particular, the result of the EPSgranules coated sample met the aviation requirements for the aircraft interior. Moreover, the presence of carbonated hydroxyapatite was identified in EPSgranules char residue by using FTIR and XRD analysis. It can contribute to the self-extinguishing property of the fabric by enhancing char formation. Thermogravimetric analysis also demonstrated that EPSgranules coated flax was able to produce greater amount of char residue and its decomposition rate was significantly reduced. This research indicates that there is a great potential to use this biopolymer as a resource for developing high performance bio-inspired flame retardant materials and contribute to a circular economy

    Comparative efficacy of Levofloxacin and Prulifloxacin against Uropathogenic Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. from a tertiary care hospital and their correlation with expression of lipase and lecithinase

    Background: Fluoroquinolone antibiotics are often used for treatment of urinary tract infections. Prulifloxacin is a newer fluoroquinolone antimicrobial, and a prodrug of Ulifloxacin. It has been approved for use in Urinary tract infections and respiratory tract infections in many countries, but comparative studies comparing its efficacy against that of Levofloxacin are rare. Objectives: Our study aimed at studying this comparative efficacy. Methods: E. coli and Klebsiella spp. were isolated and identified from urine samples and their antibiogram was seen in respect to Levofloxacin and Prulifloxacin by Diak diffusion method. Antibiogram results were correlated with lecithinase, lipase and protease activities of the bac teria. Results: Most of the E. coli isolates were resistant to Prulifloxacin, but is was mostly effective against Klebsiella spp. Conclusion: Prulifloxacin is not a good option for empirical treatment of urinary tract infection, especially those caused by E. coli

    Modeling Resolution of Resources Contention in Synchronous Data Flow Graphs

    Synchronous Data Flow graphs are widely adopted in the designing of streaming applications, but were originally formulated to describe only how an application is partitioned and which data are exchanged among different tasks. Since Synchronous Data Flow graphs are often used to describe and evaluate complete design solutions, missing information (e.g., mapping, scheduling, etc.) has to be included in them by means of further actors and channels to obtain accurate evaluations. To address this issue preserving the simplicity of the representation, techniques that model data transfer delays by means of ad-hoc actors have been proposed, but they model independently each communication ignoring contentions. Moreover, they do not usually consider at all delays due to buffer contentions, potentially overestimating the throughput of a design solution. In this paper a technique to extend Synchronous Data Flow graphs by adding ad-hoc actors and channels to model resolution of resources contentions is proposed. The results show that the number of added actors and channels is limited but that they can significantly increase the Synchronous Data Flow graph accuracy

    de Branges-Rovnyak spaces: basics and theory

    For SS a contractive analytic operator-valued function on the unit disk D{\mathbb D}, de Branges and Rovnyak associate a Hilbert space of analytic functions H(S){\mathcal H}(S) and related extension space D(S){\mathcal D(S)} consisting of pairs of analytic functions on the unit disk D{\mathbb D}. This survey describes three equivalent formulations (the original geometric de Branges-Rovnyak definition, the Toeplitz operator characterization, and the characterization as a reproducing kernel Hilbert space) of the de Branges-Rovnyak space H(S){\mathcal H}(S), as well as its role as the underlying Hilbert space for the modeling of completely non-isometric Hilbert-space contraction operators. Also examined is the extension of these ideas to handle the modeling of the more general class of completely nonunitary contraction operators, where the more general two-component de Branges-Rovnyak model space D(S){\mathcal D}(S) and associated overlapping spaces play key roles.     Nuclear matter to strange matter transition in holographic QCD

    We construct a simple holographic QCD model to study nuclear matter to strange matter transition. The interaction of dense medium and hadrons is taken care of by imposing the force balancing condition for stable D4/D6/D6 configuration. By considering the intermediate and light flavor branes interacting with baryon vertex homogeneously distributed along R^3 space and requesting the energy minimization, we find that there is a well defined transition density as a function of current quark mass. We also find that as density goes up very high, intermediate (or heavy) and light quarks populate equally as expected from the Pauli principle. In this sense, the effect of the Pauli principle is realized as dynamics of D-branes.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figure

Searching for the signatures of the phase transition has been a very important focal point of experimental endeavours in heavy ion collisions, in the last fifteen years. Simultaneously theoretical models have been developed to provide information about the equation of state and reaction mechanisms consistent with the experimental observables.     Gravitational waves from single neutron stars: an advanced detector era survey

    With the doors beginning to swing open on the new gravitational wave astronomy, this review provides an up-to-date survey of the most important physical mechanisms that could lead to emission of potentially detectable gravitational radiation from isolated and accreting neutron stars. In particular we discuss the gravitational wave-driven instability and asteroseismology formalism of the f- and r-modes, the different ways that a neutron star could form and sustain a non-axisymmetric quadrupolar "mountain" deformation, the excitation of oscillations during magnetar flares and the possible gravitational wave signature of pulsar glitches. We focus on progress made in the recent years in each topic, make a fresh assessment of the gravitational wave detectability of each mechanism and, finally, highlight key problems and desiderata for future work.Comment: 39 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables.     Experiences of the implementation of a tool for lifestyle intervention in primary health care: a qualitative study among managers and professional groups

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In recent years there has been increasing interest in transferring new knowledge into health care practices, a process often referred to as implementation. The various subcultures that exist among health care workers may be an obstacle in this process. The aim of this study was to explore how professional groups and managers experienced the implementation of a new tool for lifestyle intervention in primary health care (PHC). The computer-based tool was introduced with the intention of facilitating the delivery of preventive services.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Focus group interviews with staff and individual interviews with managers at six PHC units in the southeast of Sweden were performed 9 months after the introduction of the new working tool. Staff interviews were conducted in groups according to profession, and were analysed using manifest content analysis. Experiences and opinions from the different staff groups and from managers were analysed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Implementation preconditions, opinions about the lifestyle test, and opinions about usage were the main areas identified. In each of the groups, managers and professionals, factors related to the existing subcultures seemed to influence their experiences of the implementation. Managers were visionary, GPs were reluctant, nurses were open, and nurse assistants were indifferent.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study indicates that the existing subcultures in PHC influence how the implementation of an innovation is perceived by managers and the different professionals. In PHC, an organization with several subcultures and an established hierarchical structure, an implementation strategy aimed at all groups did not seem to result in a successful uptake of the new method.</p

    Comparative Effectiveness of Guidelines for the Management of Hyperlipidemia and Hypertension for Type 2 Diabetes Patients

    Background: Several guidelines to reduce cardiovascular risk in diabetes patients exist in North America, Europe, and Australia. Their ability to achieve this goal efficiently is unclear. Methods and Findings: Decision analysis was used to compare the efficiency and effectiveness of international contemporary guidelines for the management of hypertension and hyperlipidemia for patients aged 40-80 with type 2 diabetes. Measures of comparative effectiveness included the expected probability of a coronary or stroke event, incremental medication costs per event, and number-needed-to-treat (NNT) to prevent an event. All guidelines are equally effective, but they differ significantly in their medication costs. The range of NNT to prevent an event was small across guidelines (6.5-7.6 for males and 6.5-7.5 for females); a larger range of differences were observed for expected cost per event avoided (ranges, 117,269117,269-157,186 for males and 115,999115,999-163,775 for females). Australian and U.S. guidelines result in the highest and lowest expected costs, respectively. Conclusions: International guidelines based on the same evidence and seeking the same goal are similar in their effectiveness; however, there are large differences in expected medication costs. © 2011 Shah et al
