    The Nature of the Gould Belt from a Fractal Analysis of its Stellar Population

    The Gould Belt (GB) is a system of gas and young, bright stars distributed along a plane that is inclined with respect to the main plane of the Milky Way. Observational evidence suggests that the GB is our closest star formation complex, but its true nature and origin remain rather controversial. In this work we analyze the fractal structure of the stellar component of the GB. In order to do this, we tailor and apply an algorithm that estimates the fractal dimension in a precise and accurate way, avoiding both boundary and small data set problems. We find that early OB stars (of spectral types earlier than B4) in the GB have a fractal dimension very similar to that of the gas clouds in our Galaxy. On the contrary, stars in the GB of later spectral types show a larger fractal dimension, similar to that found for OB stars of both age groups in the local Galactic disk (LGD). This result seems to indicate that while the younger OB stars in the GB preserve the memory of the spatial structure of the cloud where they were born, older stars are distributed following a similar morphology as that found for the LGD stars.     A Self-powered And Autonomous Fringing Field Capacitive Sensor Integrated Into A Micro Sprinkler Spinner To Measure Soil Water Content

    We present here the design and fabrication of a self- powered and autonomous fringing field capacitive sensor to measure soil water content. The sensor is manufactured using a conventional printed circuit board and includes a porous ceramic. To read the sensor, we use a circuit that includes a 10 kHz triangle wave generator, an AC amplifier, a precision rectifier and a microcontroller. In terms of performance, the sensor's capacitance ( measured in a laboratory prototype) increases up to 5% when the volumetric water content of the porous ceramic changed from 3% to 36%, resulting in a sensitivity of S = 15.5 pF per unity change. Repeatability tests for capacitance measurement showed that the theta(v) sensor's root mean square error is 0.13%. The average current consumption of the system ( sensor and signal conditioning circuit) is less than 1.5 mu A, which demonstrates its suitability for being powered by energy harvesting systems. We developed a complete irrigation control system that integrates the sensor, an energy harvesting module composed of a microgenerator installed on the top of a micro sprinkler spinner, and a DC/ DC converter circuit that charges a 1 F supercapacitor. The energy harvesting module operates only when the micro sprinkler spinner is irrigating the soil, and the supercapacitor is fully charged to 5 V in about 3 h during the first irrigation. After the first irrigation, with the supercap fully charged, the system can operate powered only by the supercapacitor for approximately 23 days, without any energy being harvested.17

    Influence of Sward Height, Concentrate Supplementation and Season on Grazing Activity of Beef Cows

    The influence of sward height, concentrate supplementation and season on daily pattern of forage consumption of lactating beef cows grazing cool season pastures was determined. Cows (n=24; BW=535±10.8 kg) were randomly assigned to eight plots maintained at sward heights (SH) of either 4-8 cm or 8-12 cm and fed three levels of concentrate supplement: none = 0 kg/day, low = 3.12 kg/day or high = 6.24 kg/day. Cows on lower SH had greater (P \u3c .08) forage dry matter intake and spent an additional 1.2 hours/day (P \u3c .01) grazing compared to the higher SH. Cows on lower SH consumed 7.7 kg/day of forage dry matter and grazed 9.4 hours/day whereas those on higher SH consumed 7.1 kg/day and grazed 8.2 hours/day. Cows on lower SH grazed 0.7 hours/day (P \u3c .06) and 0.4 hours/day (P \u3c .08) longer at 06:00-10:00 hour and 11:00-13:00 hour, respectively, compared to the higher SH. Grazing efficiency (kg of forage consumed/hour of grazing) decreased (P \u3c .01) as season progressed. Season influenced duration of grazing activity (P \u3c .01). Cows grazed 0.5 hours longer (P \u3c .01) at 06:00-10:00 hour late in summer (August) compared to spring (May) and mid summer (June/July).     The Influence of Land and Tree Tenure on Participation of Smallholder and Community Forestry in the Philippines

    Key impediments to forestry development have been identified as part of a research program on smallholder and community forestry currently being conducted on Leyte Island, the Philippines, funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). A number of studies conducted as part of that research program have identified land and tree tenure issues as being a key impediment to the expansions of smallholder and community forestry. This paper examines the impacts of uncertainty of land and tree tenure on woodlot establishment, based on the results of three separate studies. A study of household needs and attitudes in relation to forestry development identified a number of policy issues associated with land and tree tenure as needing to be addressed. A second study investigated why microfinancing of woodlots was not an option for many smallholders. That study revealed that landholders are unwilling to commit resources to forestry because they do not have land titling and hence regard their land tenure as insecure. Similarly, banks appear unwilling to lend to smallholders for investment in forestry, being influenced by lack of collateral associated with insecure land tenure. A third study of tree nursery practices revealed that land ownership appears to play an important role in the sustainability of nurseries that are raising seedlings for sale. In addition, nursery owners with secure land tenure were more likely to attend training sessions

    Sward Height; Visual Estimate Compared with Plate Meter Height

    Sward height (SH) is widely used in pasture research and farm practice to evaluate pasture conditions. Visual estimates can take less time than actual measurements. This study compared visually estimated SH, of continuously grazed cool-season permanent pasture with plate meter height. Weekly estimates, by five people, were made on 12, 0.75 to 1 ha fields, grazed at two intensities. Paired data (visual estimate and plate meter height) were subjected to variance and covariance analyses and prediction equations were developed. Average visual height accounted for 86% of the variability in plate meter height. Inclusion of other sources of variability in the model (treatment, date and interactions) accounted for only a further 8% of the variability in plate meter height. On the basis of the strong linear relationships found between visual and plate meter heights, a procedure combining both methods is proposed that would reduce by 25% the time required to make weekly SH measurements of 12, 0.75 to 1 ha fields

    Opinion Dynamics of Learning Agents: Does Seeking Consensus Lead to Disagreement?

    We study opinion dynamics in a population of interacting adaptive agents voting on a set of complex multidimensional issues. We consider agents which can classify issues into for or against. The agents arrive at the opinions about each issue in question using an adaptive algorithm. Adaptation comes from learning and the information for the learning process comes from interacting with other neighboring agents and trying to change the internal state in order to concur with their opinions. The change in the internal state is driven by the information contained in the issue and in the opinion of the other agent. We present results in a simple yet rich context where each agent uses a Boolean Perceptron to state its opinion. If there is no internal clock, so the update occurs with asynchronously exchanged information among pairs of agents, then the typical case, if the number of issues is kept small, is the evolution into a society thorn by the emergence of factions with extreme opposite beliefs. This occurs even when seeking consensus with agents with opposite opinions. The curious result is that it is learning from those that hold the same opinions that drives the emergence of factions. This results follows from the fact that factions are prevented by not learning at all from those agents that hold the same opinion. If the number of issues is large, the dynamics becomes trapped and the society does not evolve into factions and a distribution of moderate opinions is observed. We also study the less realistic, but technically simpler synchronous case showing that global consensus is a fixed point. However, the approach to this consensus is glassy in the limit of large societies if agents adapt even in the case of agreement.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, revised versio

    We calculate gravitational dressed tachyon correlators in non critcal dimensions. The 2D gravity part of our theory is constrained to constant curvature. Then scaling dimensions of gravitational dressed vertex operators are equal to their bare conformal dimensions. Considering the model as d+2 dimensional critical string we calculate poles of generalized Shapiro-Virasoro amplitudes.Comment: 14 page

    High-temperature change of the creep rate in YBa 2Cu 3O 7-δ films with different pinning landscapes

    Magnetic relaxation measurements in YBa 2Cu 3O 7-δ (YBCO) films at intermediate and high temperatures show that the collective vortex creep based on the elastic motion of the vortex lattice has a crossover to fast creep that significantly reduces the superconducting critical current density (J c). This crossover occurs at temperatures much lower than the irreversibility field line. We study the influence of different kinds of crystalline defects, such as nanorods, twin boundaries, and nanoparticles, on the high-temperature vortex phase diagram of YBCO films. We found that the magnetization relaxation data is a fundamental tool to understand the pinning at high temperatures. The results indicate that high J c values are directly associated with small creep rates. Based on the analysis of the depinning temperature in films with columnar defects, our results indicate that the size of the defects is the relevant parameter that determines thermal depinning at high temperatures.     Heme oxygenase 1 improves glucoses metabolism and kidney histological alterations in diabetic rats

    One important concern in the treatment of diabetes is the maintenance of glycemic levels and the prevention of diabetic nephropathy. Inducible heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) is a rate-limiting enzyme thought to have antioxidant and cytoprotective roles. the goal of the present study was to analyze the effect of HO-1 induction in chronically hyperglycemic rats. the hyperglycemic rats were divided into two groups: one group, called STZ, was given a single injection of streptozotocin; and the other group was given a single streptozotocin injection as well as daily injections of hemin, an HO-1 inducer, over 60 days (STZ + HEME). A group of normoglycemic, untreated rats was used as the control (CTL).Body weight, diuresis, serum glucose levels, microalbuminuria, creatinine clearance rate, urea levels, sodium excretion, and lipid peroxidation were analyzed. Histological alterations and immunohistochemistry for HO-1 and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) were assessed. After 60 days, the STZ group exhibited an increase in blood glucose, diuresis, urea, microalbuminuria, and sodium excretion.     Z boson production in p+Pb collisions at sNN√=5.02 TeV measured with the ATLAS detector

    The ATLAS Collaboration has measured the inclusive production of Z bosons via their decays into electron and muon pairs in p+Pb collisions at √ sNN = 5.02 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are made using data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 29.4 nb−1 and 28.1 nb−1 for Z → ee and Z → µµ, respectively. The results from the two channels are consistent and combined to obtain a cross section times the Z → `` branching ratio, integrated over the rapidity region |y ∗ Z | < 3.5, of 139.8 ± 4.8 (stat.) ± 6.2 (syst.) ± 3.8 (lumi.) nb. Differential cross sections are presented as functions of the Z boson rapidity and transverse momentum, and compared with models based on parton distributions both with and without nuclear corrections.
