InGaN/GaN/ZnO Thermoelectric Properties
The ability to harness waste heat and convert it into electricity via thermoelectric devices is a major breakthrough in green energy. Thermoelectric devices use the Seebeck effect to directly convert a temperature difference into a voltage output, or they can perform active cooling by running a current through the device. They have a wide range of applications, from portable refrigeration to power generation from an exhaust pipe or even body heat. However, the cost, scarcity, and inefficiency of current materials (i.e. Bi2Te3, SiGe) has limited the potential of thermoelectric power. With the discovery of better materials, it will be possible to use thermoelectric devices for more applications, increasing the use of renewable energy. The purpose of this study is to determine the thermoelectric properties indium gallium nitride grown on zinc oxide with a gallium nitride buffer layer (InGaN/GaN/ZnO), materials that are more cost effective and environmentally friendly, to determine their feasibility in thermoelectric devices. Several material properties were tested and reported, including the X-ray diffraction scan of the material structure, electrical properties such as conductivity and Seebeck coefficient, and the power factor, which determines the ability of the material to produce voltage. Based on this study, InGaN/GaN/ZnO has shown considerable potential as a material for thermoelectric generators due to its favorable power factor of up to 680∙10-4 W/mK2 at room temperature. In the future, this material should be further tested within thermoelectric devices, and p-type doping methods should be explored to enable the device level performance

Predicting suicides after outpatient mental health visits in the Army Study to Assess Risk and Resilience in Servicemembers (Army STARRS).
The 2013 US Veterans Administration/Department of Defense Clinical Practice Guidelines (VA/DoD CPG) require comprehensive suicide risk assessments for VA/DoD patients with mental disorders but provide minimal guidance on how to carry out these assessments. Given that clinician-based assessments are not known to be strong predictors of suicide, we investigated whether a precision medicine model using administrative data after outpatient mental health specialty visits could be developed to predict suicides among outpatients. We focused on male nondeployed Regular US Army soldiers because they account for the vast majority of such suicides. Four machine learning classifiers (naive Bayes, random forests, support vector regression and elastic net penalized regression) were explored. Of the Army suicides in 2004-2009, 41.5% occurred among 12.0% of soldiers seen as outpatient by mental health specialists, with risk especially high within 26 weeks of visits. An elastic net classifier with 10-14 predictors optimized sensitivity (45.6% of suicide deaths occurring after the 15% of visits with highest predicted risk). Good model stability was found for a model using 2004-2007 data to predict 2008-2009 suicides, although stability decreased in a model using 2008-2009 data to predict 2010-2012 suicides. The 5% of visits with highest risk included only 0.1% of soldiers (1047.1 suicides/100 000 person-years in the 5 weeks after the visit). This is a high enough concentration of risk to have implications for targeting preventive interventions. An even better model might be developed in the future by including the enriched information on clinician-evaluated suicide risk mandated by the VA/DoD CPG to be recorded
Perfect Fluid Quantum Anisotropic Universe: Merits and Challenges
The present paper deals with quantization of perfect fluid anisotropic
cosmological models. Bianchi type V and IX models are discussed following
Schutz's method of expressing fluid velocities in terms of six potentials. The
wave functions are found for several examples of equations of state. In one
case a complete wave packet could be formed analytically. The initial
singularity of a zero proper volume can be avoided in this case, but it is
plagued by the usual problem of non-unitarity of anisotropic quantum
cosmological models. It is seen that a particular operator ordering alleviates

Characterizing Ultraviolet and Infrared Observational Properties for Galaxies. I. Influences of Dust Attenuation and Stellar Population Age
The correlation between infrared-to-ultraviolet luminosity ratio and
ultraviolet color, i.e. the IRX-UV relation, was regarded as a prevalent recipe
for correcting extragalactic dust attenuation. Considerable dispersion in this
relation discovered for normal galaxies, however, complicates its usability. In
order to investigate the cause of the dispersion, in this paper, we select five
nearby spiral galaxies, and perform spatially resolved studies on each of the
galaxies, with a combination of ultraviolet and infrared imaging data. We
measure all positions within each galaxy and divide the extracted regions into
young and evolved stellar populations. By means of this approach, we attempt to
discover separate effects of dust attenuation and stellar population age on the
IRX-UV relation for individual galaxies. In this work, in addition to dust
attenuation, stellar population age is interpreted to be another parameter in
the IRX-UV function, and the diversity of star formation histories is suggested
to disperse the age effects. At the same time, strong evidence shows the
necessity of more parameters in the interpretation of observational data, such
as variations in attenuation/extinction law. Fractional contributions of
different components to the integrated luminosities of the galaxies suggest
that the integrated measurements of galaxies which comprise different
populations would weaken the effect of the age parameter on IRX-UV diagrams.
The dependance of the IRX-UV relation on luminosity and radial distance in
galaxies presents weak trends, which offers an implication of selective
effects. The two-dimensional maps of the UV color and the
infrared-to-ultraviolet ratio are displayed and show a disparity in the spatial
distributions between the two parameters in galaxies, which offers a spatial

Increasing confidence and changing behaviors in primary care providers engaged in genetic counselling.
BackgroundScreening and counseling for genetic conditions is an increasingly important part of primary care practice, particularly given the paucity of genetic counselors in the United States. However, primary care physicians (PCPs) often have an inadequate understanding of evidence-based screening; communication approaches that encourage shared decision-making; ethical, legal, and social implication (ELSI) issues related to screening for genetic mutations; and the basics of clinical genetics. This study explored whether an interactive, web-based genetics curriculum directed at PCPs in non-academic primary care settings was superior at changing practice knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors when compared to a traditional educational approach, particularly when discussing common genetic conditions.MethodsOne hundred twenty one PCPs in California and Pennsylvania physician practices were randomized to either an Intervention Group (IG) or Control Group (CG). IG physicians completed a 6 h interactive web-based curriculum covering communication skills, basics of genetic testing, risk assessment, ELSI issues and practice behaviors. CG physicians were provided with a traditional approach to Continuing Medical Education (CME) (clinical review articles) offering equivalent information.ResultsPCPs in the Intervention Group showed greater increases in knowledge compared to the Control Group. Intervention PCPs were also more satisfied with the educational materials, and more confident in their genetics knowledge and skills compared to those receiving traditional CME materials. Intervention PCPs felt that the web-based curriculum covered medical management, genetics, and ELSI issues significantly better than did the Control Group, and in comparison with traditional curricula. The Intervention Group felt the online tools offered several advantages, and engaged in better shared decision making with standardized patients, however, there was no difference in behavior change between groups with regard to increases in ELSI discussions between PCPs and patients.ConclusionWhile our intervention was deemed more enjoyable, demonstrated significant factual learning and retention, and increased shared decision making practices, there were few differences in behavior changes around ELSI discussions. Unfortunately, barriers to implementing behavior change in clinical genetics is not unique to our intervention. Perhaps the missing element is that busy physicians need systems-level support to engage in meaningful discussions around genetics issues. The next step in promoting active engagement between doctors and patients may be to put into place the tools needed for PCPs to easily access the materials they need at the point-of-care to engage in joint discussions around clinical genetics
Evaluation of Rapid Diagnostics for Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax in Mae Sot Malaria Endemic Area, Thailand
Prompt and accurate diagnosis of malaria is the key to prevent disease morbidity and mortality. This study was carried out to evaluate diagnostic performance of 3 commercial rapid detection tests (RDTs), i.e., Malaria Antigen Pf/Pan™, Malaria Ag-Pf™, and Malaria Ag-Pv™ tests, in comparison with the microscopic and PCR methods. A total of 460 blood samples microscopically positive for Plasmodium falciparum (211 samples), P. vivax (218), mixed with P. falciparum and P. vivax (30), or P. ovale (1), and 124 samples of healthy subjects or patients with other fever-related infections, were collected. The sensitivities of Malaria Ag-Pf™ and Malaria Antigen Pf/Pan™ compared with the microscopic method for P. falciparum or P. vivax detection were 97.6% and 99.0%, or 98.6% and 99.0%, respectively. The specificities of Malaria Ag-Pf™, Malaria Ag-Pv™, and Malaria Antigen Pf/Pan™ were 93.3%, 98.8%, and 94.4%, respectively. The sensitivities of Malaria Ag-Pf™, Malaria Antigen Pf/Pan™, and microscopic method, when PCR was used as a reference method for P. falciparum or P. vivax detection were 91.8%, 100%, and 96.7%, or 91.9%, 92.6%, and 97.3%, respectively. The specificities of Malaria Ag-Pf™, Malaria Ag-Pv™, Malaria Antigen Pf/Pan™, and microscopic method were 66.2%, 92.7%, 73.9%, and 78.2%, respectively. Results indicated that the diagnostic performances of all the commercial RDTs are satisfactory for application to malaria diagnosis
Evaluation of the Workplace Environment in the UK, and the Impact on Users’ Levels of Stimulation
The purpose of this study is to evaluate a number of recently completed workplaces in the UK. The first aim is to assess the impact of various aspects of the workplace environment on users’ levels of stimulation. The body of previous research undertaken into the workplace environment, identified the aspects to be investigated. Samples of employees from the sixteen businesses were surveyed to determine their perceptions of the workplaces. The results were entered into a regression analysis, and the most significant predictors of perceived stimulation identified. The data also revealed a dramatic reduction in staff arousal levels from mornings to afternoons. Thus, there is a second aim to determine whether changes to significant aspects of the workplace environment during the day can counteract the reduction in users’ stimulation. Two further workplaces were studied to enable changes to be made over a 12-week period. A sample of employees completed questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews revealed the reasons behind the results. It was found that provision of artwork, personal control of temperature and ventilation and regular breaks were the most significant contributions to increasing stimulation after lunch; while user choice of layout, and design and décor of workspaces and break areas, were the most significant aspects at design stage
Impact of the Wall Conditioning Program on Plasma Performance in NSTX
High performance operating regimes have been achieved on NSTX (National Spherical Torus Experiment) through impurity control and wall-conditioning techniques. These techniques include HeGDC-aided boronization using deuterated trimethylboron, inter-discharge HeGDC, 350 C PFC bake-out followed by D2 and HeGDC, and experiments to test fueling discharges with either a He-trimethylboron mixture or pure trimethylboron. The impact of this impurity and density control program on recent advances in NSTX plasma performance is discussed

The effects of socioeconomic status and indices of physical environment on reduced birth weight and preterm births in Eastern Massachusetts

While use of spatial methods to estimate exposure to air pollution has increased the power to detect effects, questions have been raised about potential for confounding by social factors.Methods: A study of singleton births in Eastern Massachusetts was conducted between 1996 and 2002 to examine the association between indicators of traffic, land use, individual and area-based socioeconomic measures (SEM), and birth outcomes ( birth weight, small for gestational age and preterm births), in a two-level hierarchical model.Results: We found effects of both individual ( education, race, prenatal care index) and area-based ( median household income) SEM with all birth outcomes. The associations for traffic and land use variables were mainly seen with birth weight, with an exception for an effect of cumulative traffic density on small for gestational age. Race/ethnicity of mother was an important predictor of birth outcomes and a strong confounder for both area-based SEM and indices of physical environment. The effects of traffic and land use differed by level of education and median household income.Conclusion: Overall, the findings of the study suggested greater likelihood of reduced birth weight and preterm births among the more socially disadvantaged, and a greater risk of reduced birth weight associated with traffic exposures. Results revealed the importance of controlling simultaneously for SEM and environmental exposures as the way to better understand determinants of health.This work is supported by the Harvard Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Center,
