The author analyses the characteristics of acoustic space from a spectromorphological, cultural and technical perspective, with a focus on auditory intimacy and is proposing novel ways for working in this domain with references to two multichannel acousmatic works, Topophilia and Karst Grotto

    Cavitation Induction by Projectile Impacting on a Water Jet

    The present paper focuses on the simulation of the high-velocity impact of a projectile impacting on a water-jet, causing the onset, development and collapse of cavitation. The simulation of the fluid motion is carried out using an explicit, compressible, density-based solver developed by the authors using the OpenFOAM library. It employs a barotropic two-phase flow model that simulates the phase-change due to cavitation and considers the co-existence of non-condensable and immiscible air. The projectile is considered to be rigid while its motion through the computational domain is modelled through a direct-forcing Immersed Boundary Method. Model validation is performed against the experiments of Field et al. [Field, J., Camus, J. J., Tinguely, M., Obreschkow, D., Farhat, M., 2012. Simulations unveil the shock structures and capture the high-speed jetting forming at the impact location, in addition to the subsequent cavitation induction and vapour formation due to refraction waves. Moreover, model predictions provide quantitative information and a better insight on the flow physics that has not been identified from the reported experimental data, such as shock-wave propagation, vapour formation quantity and induced pressures. Furthermore, evidence of the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability developing on the liquid-air interface are predicted when sufficient dense grid resolution is utilised

    Root colonization and spore population by VA-mycorrhizal fungi in four grapevine rootstocks

    The occurrence of vesicular arbuscular (VA) mycorrhizae was investigated in an experimental vineyard at the Thessaloniki prefecture, in a soil which was poor in available P. The soil had not received any phosphorus fertilization for several years, nevertheless the leaves had an adequate P content (0.17 - 0.31 % of d.w.). The vineyard was planted with 4 introduced (Cinsaut, Syrah, Grenache, Carignan) and 4 local cultivars (Athiri, Roditis, Assyrtiko, Malagouzia), grafted to the rootstocks 110 R, 41 B, 140 Ru and 1103 P. Microscopic examination showed that all 4 rootstocks were colonized by VA-mycorrhizal fungi at frequencies ranging from 45 to 75 %. The number of vesicles varied between 16 and 47 and the number of arbuscules between 5 and 26 per cm of infected root. Spore number produced by the mycorrhizal fungi in the rhizosphere ranged from 196 to 280 per 100 g of soil. Spores of the genus Glomus were more commonly encountered, in particular those of G. mosseae and G. macrocarpum. The roots of 1103 P, followed by 41 B, 140 Ru and 110 R were most heavily colonized. The same pattern was observed with regard to the number of spores in the rhizosphere of these rootstocks. Grafted cultivars were found to have some influence on the degree of colonization of these rootstocks and on the population of spores, but had no effect on the formation of vesicles and arbuscules. The degree of colonization of roots by endomycorrhizal fungi was inversely related to the available P content of the soil. At the time of root sampling the P content of leaves was not directly related neither to the degree of root colonization nor to the P content of the soil. However, leaves were found to be adequately supplied with P in all cases. Therefore, the differences observed among the 8 cultivars can be attributed primarily to a variety-specific demand for P

The relation called unitary equivalence is created by the action of a unitary operator in such a way that the multiresolution structure and the decomposition and reconstruction algorithms remain invariant. A characterization in terms of the scaling functions of the multiresolution analysis is given. Distinct equivalence classes of multiresolution analysis are derived. Finally, we prove that B-splines give rise to nonequivalent examples

    From 1991 to 1993 nine quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the grape berry and its must were evaluated using local and introduced table grape cultivars of the grapevine collection of the Greek Gene Bank. The data indicate a distinct variation in the grape germplasm in all characters and demonstrate the usefulness of the genetic material as a donor of important genes for grapevine improvement. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) produced 2 factors representing 68.1% of the total variation. PC1, explaining 43.6% of the total variance, is highly correlated with berry size parameters and characteristics of the berry structure. By Cluster Analysis the assessed cultivars were separated into distinct groups; while seedlessness, was associated with small berry detachment force from the pedicel, late maturity was combined with high acid and low sugar content and a large number of seeds per berry was accompanied by low sugar content

    41 local and introduced table grape cultivars of the Greek Gene Bank in Thessaloniki were evaluated and documented with regard to 10 important morphological and viticultural characteristics, e.g. maturity time, bunch form and crop yield from 1991 tb 1993. The data indicate great variation within the grape germplasm in all characters and stress the importance of the genetic material as a donor of valuable genes for further grapevine improvement. Among the earliest cultivars is the Greek newbred Attiki (harvest time: end of July), while the local traditional Sideritis was shown to be the latest maturing cultivar (end of October). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed 3 factors representing 69.6% of the total variation. PC1, explaining 40.6% of the total variance, is highly correlated with time of maturity and crop yield. PC2, may be considered as the bunch size factor. The assessed cultivars were classified by cluster analysis into distinct groups, 2 of which contained all early and most of the late season cultivars

    Effects of social media brand-related content on fashion products buying behaviour – a moderated mediation model

    Purpose – This study examines in which circumstances consumer’s self-congruity moderates the indirect influence of consumer-based brand equity (mediating role) in the relationship between firm-created and user-generated social media content and intention to purchase fashion products. Design/methodology/approach – In this study, we carried out an online survey with social media users of fashion brands and collected data from 622 participants across two samples to investigate whether consumers’ perceptions of equity of fashion brands mediate the relationship between social media brand-related communication created by both firms and users and the intention to buy the fashion brands. The indirect relationship is further moderated by self-congruity. Findings – The results indicate that (i) brand equity mediates the relationship between social media communication and purchase intentions of fashion products, and (ii) self-congruity moderates the relationship between social media communication types and purchase intentions, such that higher/lower levels of self-congruity strengthen/weaken the impact of social media communication on purchase intentions. Originality/value – This study contributes to the business and marketing literature by exploring how social media communication, branding, and fashion align with the individual’s self-concept and buying behaviour

    Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is the most sensitive imaging modality for solid pancreatic lesions. The specificity, however, is low (about 75%). It can be increased to 100% with an accuracy of 95% by the addition of fine-needle aspiration (FNA). Cytopathology plays an important role. The final diagnosis is based upon the correlation of clinical, EUS, and cytologic features. A close interaction with the cytopathologist is required in improving the diagnostic yield. In this paper, we present an overview of the role of EUS-guided FNA and importance of close interaction with the cytopathologist.     Health-related quality of life aspects of the ‘Periodontitis prevalence in ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease’ (PPCC) cohort

    Aim: To assess whether oral health problems affect disease-specific quality of life (QoL) of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients, and vice versa, whether IBD affects oral-health-related QoL. Materials and Methods: Individuals reporting IBD and matched controls were surveyed on general anamnestic information, oral-health-related questions and the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP)-5. IBD patients were additionally surveyed on years since diagnosis, disease activity and severity as well as health-related QoL (Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire, sIBDQ). OHIP-5 and sIBDQ were defined as primary outcome parameters, and several predictors and confounders were used in adjusted univariable and multivariable regression analyses. Results: Answers from 1108 IBD patients and 3429 controls were analysed. Compared with controls, IBD patients reported significantly more frequently an oral impact on daily life and worse oral-health-related QoL, with Crohn's disease (CD) patients being more severely affected than ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. The diagnosis of UC and CD, having <20 teeth, severe periodontitis and stressful daily-life experience were associated with a higher prevalence of poor oral-health-related QoL. Among IBD patients, an impaired IBD-specific, health-related QoL was significantly associated with the diagnosis of CD and depression, IBD activity and severity, having <20 teeth, presence of oral lesions and stressful daily-life experience, while a longer time since diagnosis was significantly associated with an improved IBD-specific, health-related QoL. Conclusions: The results of the present study indicate, for the first time, that oral health problems are associated with an impairment of IBD-specific health-related QoL, and vice versa, IBD is associated with an impaired oral health-related QoL. This emphasizes the potential advantages of including dental professionals in the multi-disciplinary treatment teams of IBD patients
