Lima, una ciudad policéntrica. Un análisis a partir de la localización del empleo
El objetivo de este artículo es el estudio de la conformación de varios centros en Lima Metropolitana (Perú), a la luz del modelo policéntrico. Nos hemos aproximado empíricamente a este proceso a través de la localización espacial de la fuerza laboral, como indicador de la concentración económica en el espacio, debido esto a la escasez de información empírica. Hemos usado datos de empleo georeferenciados a nivel de zonas censales del Censo Económico de 2008 y una combinación de metodologías que nos permitió estimar funciones de densidad.Se identificó diez centros y se les clasificó según su nivel de aglomeración y consolidación de actividades económicas. Los resultados confirman la hipótesis del carácter policéntrico de Lima
Emotional intelligence and social and academic adaptation to school
In a sample of 127 Spanish adolescents, the ability to understand and manage emotions, assessed by a performance measure of emotional intelligence (the MSCEIT), correlated positively with teacher ratings of academic achievement and adaptation for both males and females. Among girls, these emotional abilities also correlated positively with peer friendship nominations. After controlling for IQ and the Big Five personality traits, the ability to understand and manage emotions remained significantly associated with teacher ratings of academic adaptation among boys and peer friendship nominations among girls. Self-perceived emotional intelligence was unrelated to these criteria. These findings provide partial support for hypotheses that emotional abilities are associated with indicators of social and academic adaptation to school
Identification and classification of Mycobacterium by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry.
Bovine tuberculosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the Mycobacterium bovis bacillum, which accounts for significant economic losses in cattle production besides being a public health threat. Our purpose is to establish MALDI-TOF (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization –Time-of-Flight) mass spectrometry method to identify and classify mycobacteria species, by means of building a specific biomarker library after solid media culture for these microrganims. We have identified 26 different protocols employing MALDI-TOF to identify and classify mycobacteria from solid media culture within 58 articles published since 2010. Four consensus protocols were designed and our results lead to the following cell treatment conditions before MALDI-TOF analysis: heat inactivation at 95ºC for 45 minutes, disruption with zirconia beads and MagNA lyser (Roche) and formic acid 70% and acetonitrile protein extraction
Analysis of the Candida Albicans Phosphoproteome
Candida albicans is an important human fungal pathogen in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals. C. albicans regulation has been studied in many contexts, including morphological transitions, mating competence, biofilm forma- tion, stress resistance, and cell wall synthesis. Analysis of kinase- and phosphatase-deficient mutants has made it clear that pro- tein phosphorylation plays an important role in the regulation of these pathways. In this study, to further our understanding of phosphorylation in C. albicans regulation, we performed a deep analysis of the phosphoproteome in C. albicans. We identified 19,590 unique peptides that corresponded to 15,906 unique phosphosites on 2,896 proteins. The ratios of serine, threonine, and tyrosine phosphosites were 80.01%, 18.11%, and 1.81%, respectively. The majority of proteins (2,111) contained at least two de- tected phosphorylation sites. Consistent with findings in other fungi, cytoskeletal proteins were among the most highly phos- phorylated proteins, and there were differences in Gene Ontology (GO) terms for proteins with serine and threonine versus ty- rosine phosphorylation sites. This large-scale analysis identified phosphosites in protein components of Mediator, an important transcriptional coregulatory protein complex. A targeted analysis of the phosphosites in Mediator complex proteins confirmed the large-scale studies, and further in vitro assays identified a subset of these phosphorylations that were catalyzed by Cdk8 (Ssn3), a kinase within the Mediator complex. These data represent the deepest single analysis of a fungal phosphoproteome and lay the groundwork for future analyses of the C. albicans phosphoproteome and specific phosphoproteins
Estimands and their estimators for clinical trials Impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic: a report from the NISS Ingram Olkin Forum Series on unplanned clinical trial disruptions
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the conduct of clinical trials globally. Complications may arise from pandemic-related operational challenges such as site closures, travel limitations and interruptions to the supply chain for the investigational product, or from health-related challenges such as COVID-19 infections. Some of these complications lead to unforeseen intercurrent events in the sense that they affect either the interpretation or the existence of the measurements associated with the clinical question of interest. In this article, we demonstrate how the ICH E9(R1) Addendum on estimands and sensitivity analyses provides a rigorous basis to discuss potential pandemic-related trial disruptions and to embed these disruptions in the context of study objectives and design elements. We introduce several hypothetical estimand strategies and review various causal inference and missing data methods, as well as a statistical method that combines unbiased and possibly biased estimators for estimation. To illustrate, we describe the features of a stylized trial, and how it may have been impacted by the pandemic. This stylized trial will then be re-visited by discussing the changes to the estimand and the estimator to account for pandemic disruptions. Finally, we outline considerations for designing future trials in the context of unforeseen disruptions
Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time-of-Flight mass spectrometry identification of Mycobacterium bovis in Bovinae.
In this study, Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time-of-Flight (MALDITOF) mass spectrometry was used to identify Mycobacterium bovis from cattle and buffalo tissue isolates from the North and South regions of Brazil, grown in solid medium and previously identified by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) based on Region of Difference 4 (RD4), sequencing and spoligotyping. For this purpose, the protein extraction protocol and the mass spectra reference database were optimized for the identification of 80 clinical isolates of mycobacteria. As a result of this optimization, it was possible to identify and differentiate M. bovis from other members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex with 100% specificity, 90.91% sensitivity and 91.25% reliability. MALDI-TOF MS methodology described herein provides successful identification of M. bovis within bovine/bubaline clinical samples, demonstrating its usefulness for bovine tuberculosis diagnosis in the future
COVID-19 and dengue coinfection in Latin America: A systematic review
"Introduction: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)
has spread globally, becoming a long-lasting pandemic. Dengue is the most common arboviral disease in tropical and subtropical regions
worldwide. COVID-19 and dengue coinfections have been reported, associated with worse outcomes with significant morbidity and
mortality. Therefore, this study aims to determine the epidemiological situation of COVID-19 and dengue coinfection in Latin America.
Methods: A systematic literature review was performed using PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, LILACS, and BVS databases
from January 1, 2020, to September 4, 2021. The key search terms used were ""dengue"" and ""COVID-19"".
Results: Nineteen published articles were included. The studies were case reports with a detailed description of the coinfection’s clinical,
laboratory, diagnostic, and treatment features.
Conclusion: Coinfection with SARS-CoV-2 and dengue virus is associated with worse outcomes with significant morbidity and
mortality. The similar clinical and laboratory features of each infection are a challenge in accurately diagnosing and treating cases. Establishing
an early diagnosis could be the answer to reducing the estimated significant burden of these conditions.
