Transition to the circular economy: the story of four case companies
Shifting from a linear sales model to a circular service-based business model is far from straightforward. Many challenges accrue in the transition process, including finding the right market for the recirculated product/service, setting up the reverse supply chain, selecting the right partners, and making sure the new business model is sustainable in the short, medium and long term. This paper discusses the challenges of four companies trying to close the loop while preserving current profit levels. It describes their initial ideas on how the circular business model should be designed, the process they went through, challenges faced, and the eventual outcome. Based on the learnings of the four case companies, we summarise recommendations about preparatory steps required before making the transition towards a circular business model
Designing a circular business strategy: 7 years of evolution at a large washing machine manufacturer
This paper discusses the development of circular business models for a large white goods manufacturer. A 7-year journey in designing, discussing, adapting, and finally finding a potentially profitable circular offer is summarized, and the barriers that had to be overcome in this process are highlighted. The shift from selling washing machines to repeated leases with remanufacturing steps in-between turned out to be very challenging. Despite the numerous claims in the consulting world that both manufacturers and consumers can benefit from the transition to a circular economy, it took multiple iterations to find a business model with the potential of being economically attractive to both the company and the client. The transformation process of shifting to a circular business model tends to be highly underestimated by companies and involves many issues beyond product design such as customer relationships, return logistics, remanufacturing operations, and service contracts. Researchers will need to work with companies to address the transition issues and to increase the relevance of circular economy research
The M33 Variable Star Population Revealed by Spitzer
We analyze five epochs of Spitzer Space Telescope/Infrared Array Camera
(IRAC) observations of the nearby spiral galaxy M33. Each epoch covered nearly
a square degree at 3.6, 4.5, and 8.0 microns. The point source catalog from the
full dataset contains 37,650 stars. The stars have luminosities characteristic
of the asymptotic giant branch and can be separated into oxygen-rich and
carbon-rich populations by their [3.6] - [4.5] colors. The [3.6] - [8.0] colors
indicate that over 80% of the stars detected at 8.0 microns have dust shells.
Photometric comparison of epochs using conservative criteria yields a catalog
of 2,923 variable stars. These variables are most likely long-period variables
amidst an evolved stellar population. At least one-third of the identified

Plasmons in strongly correlated systems: spectral weight transfer and renormalized dispersion
We study the charge-density dynamics within the two-dimensional extended
Hubbard model in the presence of long-range Coulomb interaction across the
metal-insulator transition point. To take into account strong correlations we
start from self-consistent extended dynamical mean-field theory and include
non-local dynamical vertex corrections through a ladder approximation to the
polarization operator. This is necessary to fulfill charge conservation and to
describe plasmons in the correlated state. The calculated plasmon spectra are
qualitatively different from those in the random-phase approximation: they
exhibit a spectral density transfer and a renormalized dispersion with enhanced
deviation from the canonical -behavior. Both features are reminiscent
of interaction induced changes found in single-electron spectra of strongly

Spitzer SAGE-SMC Infrared Photometry of Massive Stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud
We present a catalog of 5324 massive stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud
(SMC), with accurate spectral types compiled from the literature, and a
photometric catalog for a subset of 3654 of these stars, with the goal of
exploring their infrared properties. The photometric catalog consists of stars
with infrared counterparts in the Spitzer, SAGE-SMC survey database, for which
we present uniform photometry from 0.3-24 um in the UBVIJHKs+IRAC+MIPS24 bands.
We compare the color magnitude diagrams and color-color diagrams to those of
the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), finding that the brightest infrared sources
in the SMC are also the red supergiants, supergiant B[e] (sgB[e]) stars,
luminous blue variables, and Wolf-Rayet stars, with the latter exhibiting less
infrared excess, the red supergiants being less dusty and the sgB[e] stars
being on average less luminous. Among the objects detected at 24 um are a few
very luminous hypergiants, 4 B-type stars with peculiar, flat spectral energy
distributions, and all 3 known luminous blue variables. We detect a distinct Be
star sequence, displaced to the red, and suggest a novel method of confirming
Be star candidates photometrically. We find a higher fraction of Oe and Be
stars among O and early-B stars in the SMC, respectively, when compared to the
LMC, and that the SMC Be stars occur at higher luminosities. We estimate
mass-loss rates for the red supergiants, confirming the correlation with
luminosity even at the metallicity of the SMC. Finally, we confirm the new
class of stars displaying composite A & F type spectra, the sgB[e] nature of
2dFS1804 and find the F0 supergiant 2dFS3528 to be a candidate luminous blue

OH-selected AGB and post-AGB objects I.Infrared and maser properties
Using 766 compact objects from a survey of the galactic Plane in the 1612-MHz
OH line, new light is cast on the infrared properties of evolved stars on the
TP-AGB and beyond. The usual mid-infrared selection criteria, based on IRAS
colours, largely fail to distinguish early post-AGB stages. A two-colour
diagram from narrower-band MSX flux densities, with bimodal distributions,
provides a better tool to do the latter. Four mutually consistent selection
criteria for OH-masing red PPNe are given, as well as two for early post-AGB
masers and one for all post--AGB masers, including the earliest ones. All these
criteria miss a group of blue, high-outflow post-AGB sources with 60-mum
excess; these will be discussed in detail in Paper II. The majority of post-AGB
sources show regular double-peaked spectra in the OH 1612-MHz line, with fairly
low outflow velocities, although the fractions of single peaks and irregular
spectra may vary with age and mass. The OH flux density shows a fairly regular
relation with the stellar flux and the envelope optical depth, with the maser
efficiency increasing with IRAS colour R21. The OH flux density is linearly

Self-consistent Dual Boson approach to single-particle and collective excitations in correlated systems
We propose an efficient dual boson scheme, which extends the DMFT paradigm to
collective excitations in correlated systems. The theory is fully
self-consistent both on the one- and on the two-particle level, thus describing
the formation of collective modes as well as the renormalization of electronic
and bosonic spectra on equal footing. The method employs an effective impurity
model comprising both fermionic and bosonic hybridization functions. Only
single- and two-electron Green's functions of the reference problem enter the
theory, due to the optimal choice of the self-consistency condition for the
effective bosonic bath. We show that the theory is naturally described by a
dual Luttinger-Ward functional and obeys the relevant conservation laws.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figure
