    Void-induced cross slip of screw dislocations in fcc copper

    Pinning interaction between a screw dislocation and a void in fcc copper is investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulation. A screw dislocation bows out to undergo depinning on the original glide plane at low temperatures, where the behavior of the depinning stress is consistent with that obtained by a continuum model. If the temperature is higher than 300 K, the motion of a screw dislocation is no longer restricted to a single glide plane due to cross slip on the void surface. Several depinning mechanisms that involve multiple glide planes are found. In particular, a depinning mechanism that produces an intrinsic prismatic loop is found. We show that these complex depinning mechanisms significantly increase the depinning stress

    Shear Modulus of an Elastic Solid under External Pressure as a function of Temperature: The case of Helium

    The energy of a dislocation loop in a continuum elastic solid under pressure is considered within the framework of classical mechanics. For a circular loop, this is a function with a maximum at pressures that are well within reach of experimental conditions for solid helium suggesting, in this case, that dislocation loops can be generated by a pressure-assisted thermally activated process. It is also pointed out that pinned dislocations segments can alter the shear response of solid helium, by an amount consistent with current measurements, without any unpinning.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Effective dimensionality of the Portevin - Le Chatelier effect

    Tensile tests have been carried out by deforming polycrystalline samples of substitutional Al-2.5%Mg alloy at room temperature at a range of strain rates. The Portevin - Le Chatelier (PLC) effect was observed. From an analysis of the experimental stress versus time series data we have inferred that the dynamics of the PLC effect in a local finite time is controlled by a finite number of degrees of freedom and this effective dimension becomes reduced with increasing strain.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

    International audienceErgovaline (EV) produced by symbiotic association of EpichloĂ« coenophiala with tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum) causes toxicoses in livestock. In this study, 16 lactating ewes (BW 76.0 ± 0.6 kg) were used to determine the effects of feeding endophyte-infected (FE+) or endophyte free (FE−) tall fescue hay on animal health and performances and to investigate the putative mechanisms of action of EV. The mean EV concentrations in FE+ and FE− diets were 497 ± 52 and <5 ”g/kg DM, respectively. Decreased hay consumption and BW were observed in the FE+ group. Prolactin (PRL) concentrations decreased (P < 0.02) in the FE+ group from d 3 to 28 of the study compared to the FE− group, but no consequences were observed on milk quantity or quality. Skin temperature and the thermocirculation index were lower (P < 0.05) in the FE+ than in the FE− group from d 3 to 7, but this effect disappeared from d 14 to 28. Hematocrit, mineral and biochemical, and enzymatic analyses of plasma revealed no differences between the 2 groups. Measurement of oxidative damage and antioxidant enzyme activities revealed a decrease in the activities of plasma catalase (P < 0.05), kidney glutathione reductase and peroxidase and in kidney total glutathione and malo-ndialdehyde contents (P < 0.02) in ewes fed FE+. Hepatic flavin monooxygenase enzyme activities decreased (P < 0.01) in ewes fed FE+, except for a marked increase in the demethylation of erythromycin. This activity is linked to cytochrome P4503A content and is known to be involved in ergot alkaloid metabolism. Glutathione S-transferase activity in the kidneys decreased (P < 0.02) in the FE+ group, whereas no difference was observed in uridine diphosphate-glucuronosyltransferase activity in the liver or kidneys. The reversibility of the effect of FE+ hay on skin temperature and the increase in erythromy-cin N-demethylase activity may contribute to the relative resistance of ewes to EV toxicity
