We demonstrate the suitability of microcavities based on circular grating resonators (CGRs) as fast switches. This type of optical resonator is characterized by a high quality factor and very small mode volume. The waveguide-coupled CGRs are fabricated with silicon-on-insulator technology compatible with standard complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) processing. The linear optical properties of the CGRs are investigated by transmission spectroscopy. From 3D finite-difference time-domain simulations of isolated CGRs, we identify the measured resonances. We probe the spatial distribution and the parasitic losses of a resonant optical mode with scanning near-field optical microscopy. We observe fast all-optical switching within a few picoseconds by optically generating free charge carriers within the cavity. (C) 2009 Optical Society of Americ
This is a qualitative study using Thematic Content Analysis. Twelve individual semi-structured interviews were performed at a private university in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Data collection was performed between 2004 and 2005, using a guiding question. Data analysis revealed categories, herein referred to as Complex Pedagogical Indicators, which assigned meanings to complex care. Results showed that the interviewees realized and expressed sensitive care in nursing, making relations and interrelations of the parts with the whole and the whole with the parts, thus approaching complex care
The representations of human vulnerability held by health workers - development and validation of a scale
OBJECTIVES: This study's objective consisted of the construction and validation of a scale to identify the representation of human vulnerability in the health field. METHOD: its development was divided into three steps: a bibliographic review and exploratory interviews were conducted to establish the items and their subsequent aggregation into dimensions; evaluation by an expert committee; and pre-test. The scale's psychometric properties were evaluated based on its application to a sample of individuals (nurses, physicians, and senior nursing and medical undergraduate students). Validity, reliability, and internal consistency tests were performed. RESULTS: the scale obtained consists of four dimensions (knowledge of intrinsic vulnerability, knowledge of extrinsic vulnerability, experience of vulnerability, and perception of vulnerability in patients). The scale presents good internal consistency with high Cronbach's alpha coefficient values. CONCLUSION: The Representation of Human Vulnerability in Health Workers Scale is easy to apply and presents reliable psychometric properties. It is an innovative tool that can be used in the development of studies addressing human vulnerability
Justice Through a Multispecies Lens
The bushfires in Australia during the Summer of 2019–2020, in the midst of which we were writing this exchange, violently heightened the urgency of the task of rethinking justice through a multispecies lens for all of the authors in this exchange, and no doubt many of its readers. As I finish this introduction, still in the middle of the Australian summer, more than 10 million hectares (100,000 km2 or 24.7 million acres) of bushland have been burned and over a billion individual animals killed. This says nothing of the others who will die because their habitat and the relationships on which they depend no longer exist. People all around the world are mourning these deaths and the destruction of unique ecosystems. As humans on this planet, and specifically as political theorists facing the prospect that such devastating events will only become more frequent, the question before us is whether we can rethink what it means to be in ethical relationships with beings other than humans and what justice requires, in ways that mark these deaths as absolute wrongs that obligate us to act, and not simply as unfortunate tragedies that leave us bereft
Activation of c-Src tyrosine kinase mediated the degradation of occludin in ventilator-induced lung injury
BACKGROUND: Ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) is characterized by increased alveolar permeability, pulmonary edema. The tyrosine kinase, c-Src, is involved in VILI but its role has not been fully elucidated. This study examined the relationship between c-Src activation and occludin levels in VILI both in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: For the in vivo study, Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups: control (group C); normal tidal volume (group M); normal tidal volume + c-Src inhibitor (PP2) (group M + P); high tidal volume (group H); and high tidal volume + c-Src inhibitor (PP2) (group H + P). Rats in all groups but group C underwent mechanical ventilation for 4 h. For the in vitro study, MLE-12 cells pretreated with PP2 and siRNA underwent cyclic stretching at 8% or 20% for 0, 1, 2 and 4 h. The expressions of occludin, c-Src, and p-c-Src were analyzed by western blotting, hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining, and immunofluorescence. RESULTS: For the in vivo study, rats in group H showed decreased occludin expression and activated c-Src compared with group C. HE staining and lung injury score showed more severe lung injury and alveolar edema in group H compared with group M and group C. Group H + P had less pulmonary edema induced by the high tidal volume ventilation. For the in vitro study, occludin expression decreased and c-Src activation increased as indicated by the phosphorylation of c-Src over time. Consistently, PP2 could restore occludin levels. CONCLUSIONS: Mechanical ventilation can activate c-Src by phosphorylation and increase the degradation of occludin. c-Src inhibitor can ameliorate barrier function and lung injury by up-regulating occludin
