    PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF 3DPD, THE PHOTOGRAMMETRIC PIPELINE FOR THE CASSIS STEREO IMAGES

    A novel photogrammetric pipeline has been designed by INAF-Padova for the processing of the recent stereo images of CaSSIS and it will be a starting point for the future procedures that will be applied to Stereo Camera (STC) (Cremonese, 2009; Da Deppo, 2010) images for the BepiColombo mission to Mercury. The large number of stereo pairs being generated has made it necessary that several teams attempt to generate products. The presented procedures are the two strategies (proposed by INAF-PADOVA and by EPFLLausanne) available nowadays in an international attempt to generate 3D products from the CaSSIS images. The comparisons here presented will be the first of several such efforts and are important to make the planetary community aware of the accuracy of the 3D data available. Furthermore, the possibility to consider higher accuracy DTMs as the ones of HiRISE makes the quality assessment of stereo products of CaSSIS robust and important for the assessment of data to be provided to the scientific community. The performance evaluation of the INAF-Padova pipeline (3DPD software) is the main objectives of this work.     Functioning and disability in multiple sclerosis from the patient perspective

    Multiple sclerosis (MS) has a great impact on functioning and disability. The perspective of those who experience the health problem has to be taken into account to obtain an in-depth understanding of functioning and disability. The objective was to describe the areas of functioning and disability and relevant contextual factors in MS from the patient perspective. A qualitative study using focus group methodology was performed. The sample size was determined by saturation. The focus groups were digitally recorded and transcribed verbatim. The meaning condensation procedure was used for data analysis. Identified concepts were linked to International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) categories according to established linking rules. Six focus groups with a total of 27 participants were performed. In total, 1327 concepts were identified and linked to 106 ICF categories of the ICF components Body Functions, Activities and Participation and Environmental Factors. This qualitative study reports on the impact of MS on functioning and disability from the patient perspective. The participants in this study provided information about all physical aspects and areas of daily life affected by the disease, as well as the environmental factors influencing their lives

    Neutralization of the neuromuscular activity of bothropstoxin-i, a myotoxin from Bothrops jararacussu snake venom, by a hydroalcoholic extract of Casearia sylvestris Sw. (guaçatonga)

    Numerous plants are used as snakebite antidotes in Brazilian folk medicine, including Casearia sylvestris Swartz, popularly known as guaçatonga. In this study, we examined the action of a hydroalcoholic extract from C. sylvestris on the neuromuscular blockade caused by bothropstoxin-I (BthTX-I), a myotoxin from Bothrops jararacussu venom, in mouse isolated phrenic nerve-diaphragm (PND) preparations. Aqueous (8 and 12 mg/ml, n=4 and 5, respectively) and hydroalcoholic (12 mg/ml, n=12) extracts of the leaves of C. sylvestris caused facilitation in PND preparations followed by partial neuromuscular blockade. BthTX-I (20 µg/ml, n=4) caused 50% paralysis after 65±15 min (mean ± S.E.M). Preincubation (30 min at 37° C) of BthTX-I (20 µg/ml, n=4) with a concentration of the hydroalcoholic extract (4 mg/ml) that had no neuromuscular activity, such as the control (n=5), prevented the neuromuscular blockade caused by the toxin.     Allergic diseases in the elderly: biological characteristics and main immunological and non-immunological mechanisms

    Life expectancy and the number of elderly people are progressively increasing around the world. Together with other pathologies, allergic diseases also show an increasing incidence in geriatric age. This is partly due to the growing emphasis on a more accurate and careful diagnosis of the molecular mechanisms that do not allow to ignore the real pathogenesis of many symptoms until now unknown, and partly to the fact that the allergic people from 20 years ago represent the elderly population now. Moreover, environmental pollution predisposes to the onset of allergic asthma and dermatitis which are the result of internal pathologies more than the expression of allergic manifestations. At the same time the food contamination permits the onset of allergic diseases related to food allergy. In this review we provide the state of the art on the physiological changes in the elderly responsible for allergic diseases, their biological characteristics and the major immunological and extra immunological mechanisms. Much emphasis is given to the management of several diseases in the elderly, including anaphylactic reactions. Moreover, some new features are discussed, such as management of asthma with the support of physical activity and the use of the AIT as prevention of respiratory diseases and for the purpose of a real and long lasting benefit. The mechanisms of adverse reactions to drugs are also discussed, due to their frequency in this age, especially in polytherapy regimens. Study of the modifications of the immune system is also of great importance, as regards to the distribution of the lymphocytes and also the presence of a chronic inflammatory disease related to the production of cytokines, especially in prevision of all the possible therapies to be adopted to allow an active and healthy agin

    A PHOTOGRAMMETRIC PIPELINE FOR THE 3D RECONSTRUCTION OF CASSIS IMAGES ON BOARD EXOMARS TGO

    CaSSIS (Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System) is the stereo imaging system onboard the European Space Agency and ROSCOSMOS ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) that has been launched on 14 March 2016 and entered a Mars elliptical orbit on 19 October 2016. During the first bounded orbits, CaSSIS returned its first multiband images taken on 22 and 26 November 2016. The telescope acquired 11 images, each composed by 30 framelets, of the Martian surface near Hebes Chasma and Noctis Labyrithus regions reaching at closest approach at a distance of 250 km from the surface. Despite of the eccentricity of this first orbit, CaSSIS has provided one stereo pair with a mean ground resolution of 6 m from a mean distance of 520 km. The team at the Astronomical Observatory of Padova (OAPD-INAF) is involved into different stereo oriented missions and it is realizing a software for the generation of Digital Terrain Models from the CaSSIS images. The SW will be then adapted also for other projects involving stereo camera systems. To compute accurate 3D models, several sequential methods and tools have been developed. The preliminary pipeline provides: the generation of rectified images from the CaSSIS framelets, a matching core and post-processing methods. The software includes in particular: an automatic tie points detection by the Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) operator, an initial search for the correspondences through Normalize Cross Correlation (NCC) algorithm and the Adaptive Least Square Matching (LSM) algorithm in a hierarchical approach.     Brain structural and functional recovery following initiation of combination antiretroviral therapy

    NeuroAIDS persists in the era of combination antiretroviral therapies. We describe here the recovery of brain structure and function following 6 months of therapy in a treatment-naive patient presenting with HIV-associated dementia. The patient’s neuropsychological test performance improved and his total brain volume increased by more than 5 %. Neuronal functional connectivity measured by magnetoencephalography changed from a pattern identical to that observed in other HIV-infected individuals to one that was indistinguishable from that of uninfected control subjects. These data suggest that at least some of the effects of HIV on the brain can be fully reversed with treatment

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Rhodium (II) citrate (Rh<sub>2</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>cit)<sub>4</sub>) has significant antitumor, cytotoxic, and cytostatic activity on Ehrlich ascite tumor. Although toxic to normal cells, its lower toxicity when compared to carboxylate analogues of rhodium (II) indicates Rh<sub>2</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>cit)<sub>4 </sub>as a promising agent for chemotherapy. Nevertheless, few studies have been performed to explore this potential. Superparamagnetic particles of iron oxide (SPIOs) represent an attractive platform as carriers in drug delivery systems (DDS) because they can present greater specificity to tumor cells than normal cells. Thus, the association between Rh<sub>2</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>cit)<sub>4 </sub>and SPIOs can represent a strategy to enhance the former's therapeutic action. In this work, we report the cytotoxicity of free rhodium (II) citrate (Rh<sub>2</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>cit)<sub>4</sub>) and rhodium (II) citrate-loaded maghemite nanoparticles or magnetoliposomes, used as drug delivery systems, on both normal and carcinoma breast cell cultures.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Treatment with free Rh<sub>2</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>cit)<sub>4 </sub>induced cytotoxicity that was dependent on dose, time, and cell line. The IC<sub>50 </sub>values showed that this effect was more intense on breast normal cells (MCF-10A) than on breast carcinoma cells (MCF-7 and 4T1). However, the treatment with 50 μM Rh<sub>2</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>cit)<sub>4</sub>-loaded maghemite nanoparticles (Magh-Rh<sub>2</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>cit)<sub>4</sub>) and Rh<sub>2</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>cit)<sub>4</sub>-loaded magnetoliposomes (Lip-Magh-Rh<sub>2</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>cit)<sub>4</sub>) induced a higher cytotoxicity on MCF-7 and 4T1 than on MCF-10A (p < 0.05). These treatments enhanced cytotoxicity up to 4.6 times. These cytotoxic effects, induced by free Rh<sub>2</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>cit)<sub>4</sub>, were evidenced by morphological alterations such as nuclear fragmentation, membrane blebbing and phosphatidylserine exposure, reduction of actin filaments, mitochondrial condensation and an increase in number of vacuoles, suggesting that Rh<sub>2</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>cit)<sub>4 </sub>induces cell death by apoptosis.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The treatment with rhodium (II) citrate-loaded maghemite nanoparticles and magnetoliposomes induced more specific cytotoxicity on breast carcinoma cells than on breast normal cells, which is the opposite of the results observed with free Rh<sub>2</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>cit)<sub>4 </sub>treatment. Thus, magnetic nanoparticles represent an attractive platform as carriers in Rh<sub>2</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>cit)<sub>4 </sub>delivery systems, since they can act preferentially in tumor cells. Therefore, these nanopaticulate systems may be explored as a potential tool for chemotherapy drug development.</p

    Passives and Se Constructions

    In this chapter we discuss some of the main properties of constructions involving participial passives, passive se, and impersonal se in Portuguese, focusing on its two main varieties, European and Brazilian Portuguese (henceforth EP and BP, respectively).1 When the two dialects differ, we will provide the relevant judgments each dialect assigns to the data under discussion by using the abbreviations EP and BP. The chapter is organized in five sections. Section 2 deals with participial passives, distinguishing between adjectival and verbal passives and between the participial forms of passives and compound tenses.
