Vascular epiphytes represent 10% of the total vascular plants of the world. Nevertheless, because it is hard to reach them in the forest upper-canopy where they usually live, there are few studies (especially in Chile) about them. With the objective of identifying the vascular epiphytes growing on tree stems (under 1.5 m height), we sampled three transects in an Olivillo old-growth stand, in the Rucamanque forest, in the central valley of south-central Chile, near the city of Temuco. Several variables were measured for both the vascular epiphytes and their host-trees. We studied the floristic composition of the vascular epiphytes community, and their relationship with their host-trees, as well as their sociability, cover, and frequency. Eight vascular epiphytes species were identified, corresponding to four genus distributed in three families: Hymenophyllum and Hymenoglossum (Hymenophyllaceae), Asplenium (Aspleniaceae) and Sarmienta (Gesneriaceae). We found only a non-statistically significant linear correlation between vascular epiphytes and their host-trees. We determined that Hymenophyllum cuneatum was the most important vascular epiphytes species

Re-ordering connections: UK healthcare workers' experiences of emotion management during the COVID-19 pandemic

This paper examines the impact of disruptions to the organisation and delivery of healthcare services and efforts to re-order care through emotion management during the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK. Framing care as an affective practice, studying healthcare workers' (HCWs) experiences enables better understanding of how interactions between staff, patients and families changed as a result of the pandemic. Using a rapid qualitative research methodology, we conducted interviews with frontline HCWs in two London hospitals during the peak of the first wave of the pandemic and sourced public accounts of HCWs' experiences of the pandemic from social media (YouTube and Twitter). We conducted framework analysis to identify key factors disrupting caring interactions. Fear of infection and the barriers of physical distancing acted to separate staff from patients and families, requiring new affective practices to repair connections. Witnessing suffering was distressing for staff, and providing a 'good death' for patients and communicating care to families was harder. In addition to caring for patients and families, HCWs cared for each other. Infection control measures were important for limiting the spread of COVID-19 but disrupted connections that were integral to care, generating new work to re-order interactions

Recently, the growth of technology and its prominent importance in the world of fitness have triggered the publication of several books and research papers. Moreover, there are a strong concern about exercise addiction and its health consequences among the research community. Variables such as technology, exercise addiction and health could be related with the issue. This study aims at investigating whether there is an association between the use of fitness devices, exercise addiction and trait anxiety. The investigation analyzes a simple of 102 users of fitness centers located in Zaragoza with a mean age of 30 years old. The study uses different questionnaires in order to evaluate: i) the use of technology (own questionnaire), exercise addiction (ExerciseAddic (ion Inventory) and iii) the level of trait anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory). Results indicates that most of the users use technology during their training sessions, being larger the percentage of men than women. Further, interesting associations between age and exercise addiction were found, as well as, between trait anxiety and exercise addiction. In addition, the study highlights that wearables and mobile apps are the trendy devices. Nevertheless, greater range of variables associated with health calls for more experimental studies with larger samples

A conceptual study of a self-centering semi-rigid connection with energy dissipation for wooden frames

Indexación: Scopus.A proposal of a semi-rigid self-centering connection for the seismic protection of wooden structures is studied. An analytical model for the characterization of the response of the connection is developed. Quasi-static tests of a wooden column with the proposed connection allowed to validate the model and calibrate its parameters, obtaining errors smaller than 6% between analytical prediction and experimental results. The self-centering capacity and the effectiveness of the connection to limit the loads transmitted to the connected elements were evidenced. Damped free vibration tests evidenced the capacity of the connection to reduce structural vibrations. It was verified that the resistance and dissipation capacity of the connection can be modified by two design parameters that can be adjusted at the assembly. The proposed connection has desirable characteristics for its use in the protection of structural wooden frames, is versatile, and its design is simple, with explicit physical parameters.https://www.scielo.br/j/lajss/a/cC9pyHNNybKPBm69gxf3TJC/?lang=e

A Kato type Theorem for the inviscid limit of the Navier-Stokes equations with a moving rigid body

The issue of the inviscid limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations when a no-slip condition is prescribed on the boundary is a famous open problem. A result by Tosio Kato says that convergence to the Euler equations holds true in the energy space if and only if the energy dissipation rate of the viscous flow in a boundary layer of width proportional to the viscosity vanishes. Of course, if one considers the motion of a solid body in an incompressible fluid, with a no-slip condition at the interface, the issue of the inviscid limit is as least as difficult. However it is not clear if the additional difficulties linked to the body's dynamic make this issue more difficult or not. In this paper we consider the motion of a rigid body in an incompressible fluid occupying the complementary set in the space and we prove that a Kato type condition implies the convergence of the fluid velocity and of the body velocity as well, what seems to indicate that an answer in the case of a fixed boundary could also bring an answer to the case where there is a moving body in the fluid

Noise induced transition from an absorbing phase to a regime of stochastic spatiotemporal intermittency

    Get PDF
We introduce a stochastic partial differential equation capable of reproducing the main features of spatiotemporal intermittency (STI). Additionally the model displays a noise induced transition from laminarity to the STI regime. We show by numerical simulations and a mean-field analysis that for high noise intensities the system globally evolves to a uniform absorbing phase, while for noise intensities below a critical value spatiotemporal intermittence dominates. A quantitative computation of the loci of this transition in the relevant parameter space is presented.Comment: 4 pages, 6 eps figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. Specific Roles of XRCC4 Paralogs PAXX and XLF during V(D)J Recombination.

Paralog of XRCC4 and XLF (PAXX) is a member of the XRCC4 superfamily and plays a role in nonhomologous end-joining (NHEJ), a DNA repair pathway critical for lymphocyte antigen receptor gene assembly. Here, we find that the functions of PAXX and XLF in V(D)J recombination are masked by redundant joining activities. Thus, combined PAXX and XLF deficiency leads to an inability to join RAG-cleaved DNA ends. Additionally, we demonstrate that PAXX function in V(D)J recombination depends on its interaction with Ku. Importantly, we show that, unlike XLF, the role of PAXX during the repair of DNA breaks does not overlap with ATM and the RAG complex. Our findings illuminate the role of PAXX in V(D)J recombination and support a model in which PAXX and XLF function during NHEJ repair of DNA breaks, whereas XLF, the RAG complex, and the ATM-dependent DNA damage response promote end joining by stabilizing DNA ends.Cancer Research UK (Grant IDs: C6/A18796, C6946/A14492, C6/A18796), European Research Council (Grant ID: 310917), Wellcome Trust (Grant ID: WT092096), University of Cambridge, Institut PasteurThis is the final version of the article. Induction and migration of cryptic/defective Salmonella enterica prophages as a consequence of infection with lytic phages is an additional factor in stability of a coevolutionary vector

    Get PDF
The influence of infection of natural isolates of Salmonella enterica with lytic (nonlysogenic) phages on the expression of resident cryptic or defective prophages in host bacteria was studied. The induction of defective/cryptic phages after infection with nonlysogenic phages and packaging of bacterial chromosomal fragments in capsids of defective phages is demonstrated. This may lead to migration and wide distribution of both the genomes of defective phages per se and various fragments of the bacterial chromosome (including pathogenic islands) in new bacterial strains with concomitant change of their properties, the acquired new features of pathogenicity among them. This work was supported by EC PhageVet-P (contract no.
