A Femtosecond Neutron Source
The possibility to use the ultrashort ion bunches produced by circularly
polarized laser pulses to drive a source of fusion neutrons with sub-optical
cycle duration is discussed. A two-side irradiation of a thin foil deuterated
target produces two countermoving ion bunches, whose collision leads to an
ultrashort neutron burst. Using particle-in-cell simulations and analytical
modeling, it is evaluated that, for intensities of a few ,
more than neutrons per Joule may be produced within a time shorter than
one femtosecond. Another scheme based on a layered deuterium-tritium target is
outlined.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure
Two-dimensional amine and hydroxy functionalized fused aromatic covalent organic framework
Ordered two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have generally been synthesized using reversible reactions. It has been difficult to synthesize a similar degree of ordered COFs using irreversible reactions. Developing COFs with a fused aromatic ring system via an irreversible reaction is highly desirable but has remained a significant challenge. Here we demonstrate a COF that can be synthesized from organic building blocks via irreversible condensation (aromatization). The as-synthesized robust fused aromatic COF (F-COF) exhibits high crystallinity. Its lattice structure is characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray diffraction pattern. Because of its fused aromatic ring system, the F-COF structure possesses high physiochemical stability, due to the absence of hydrolysable weak covalent bonds
Overcoming cross-cultural group work tensions: mixed student perspectives on the role of social relationships
As universities worldwide rapidly internationalise, higher education classrooms have become unique spaces for collaboration between students from different countries. One common way to encourage collaboration between diverse peers is through group work. However, previous research has highlighted that cross-cultural group work can be challenging and has hinted at potential social tensions. To understand this notion better, we have used robust quantitative tools in this study to select 20 participants from a larger classroom of 860 students to take part in an in-depth qualitative interview about cross-cultural group work experiences. Participant views on social tensions in cross-cultural group work were elicited using a unique mediating artefact method to encourage reflection and in-depth discussion. In our analysis of emergent interview themes, we compared student perspectives on the role of social relationships in group work by their academic performance level. Our findings indicated that all students interviewed desired the opportunity to form social relationships with their group work members, but their motivations for doing so varied widely by academic performance level
Region of hadron-quark mixed phase in hybrid stars
Hadron--quark mixed phase is expected in a wide region of the inner structure
of hybrid stars. However, we show that the hadron--quark mixed phase should be
restricted to a narrower region to because of the charge screening effect. The
narrow region of the mixed phase seems to explain physical phenomena of neutron
stars such as the strong magnetic field and glitch phenomena, and it would give
a new cooling curve for the neutron star.Comment: to be published in Physical Review
Heavy quark impact factor in kT-factorization
We present the calculation of the finite part of the heavy quark impact factor at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy in a form suitable for phenomenological studies such as the calculation of the cross-section for single bottom quark production at the LHC within the kT-factorization scheme
Double-logs, Gribov-Lipatov reciprocity and wrapping
We study analytical properties of the five-loop anomalous dimension of
twist-2 operators at negative even values of Lorentz spin. Following L. N.
Lipatov and A. I. Onishchenko, we have found two possible generalizations of
double-logarithmic equation, which allow to predict a lot of poles of anomalous
dimension of twist-2 operators at all orders of perturbative theory from the
known results. Second generalization is related with the reciprocity-respecting
function, which is a single-logarithmic function in this case. We have found,
that the knowledge of first orders of the reciprocity-respecting function gives
all-loop predictions for the highest poles. Obtained predictions can be used
for the reconstruction of a general form of the wrapping corrections for
twist-2 operators.Comment: 17 pages, references adde
NLO QCD corrections to off-shell top-antitop production with leptonic decays at hadron colliders
We present details of a calculation of the cross section for hadronic
top-antitop production in next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD, including the decays
of the top and antitop into bottom quarks and leptons. This calculation is
based on matrix elements for \nu e e+ \mu- \bar{\nu}_{\mu}b\bar{b} production
and includes all non-resonant diagrams, interferences, and off-shell effects of
the top quarks. Such contributions are formally suppressed by the top-quark
width and turn out to be small in the inclusive cross section. However, they
can be strongly enhanced in exclusive observables that play an important role
in Higgs and new-physics searches. Also non-resonant and off-shell effects due
to the finite W-boson width are investigated in detail, but their impact is
much smaller than naively expected. We also introduce a matching approach to
improve NLO calculations involving intermediate unstable particles. Using a
fixed QCD scale leads to perturbative instabilities in the high-energy tails of
distributions, but an appropriate dynamical scale stabilises NLO predictions.
Numerical results for the total cross section, several distributions, and
asymmetries are presented for Tevatron and the LHC at 7 TeV, 8 TeV, and 14 TeV.Comment: 61 pp. Matches version published in JHEP; one more reference adde
Six-Loop Anomalous Dimension of Twist-Three Operators in N=4 SYM
The result for the six-loop anomalous dimension of twist-three operators in
the planar N=4 SYM theory is presented. The calculations were performed along
the paper arXiv:0912.1624. This result provides a new data for testing the
proposed spectral equations for planar AdS/CFT correspondence.Comment: 19 pages, typos corrected, details adde
A road to reality with topological superconductors
Topological states of matter are a source of low-energy quasiparticles, bound
to a defect or propagating along the surface. In a superconductor these are
Majorana fermions, described by a real rather than a complex wave function. The
absence of complex phase factors promises protection against decoherence in
quantum computations based on topological superconductivity. This is a tutorial
style introduction written for a Nature Physics focus issue on topological
matter.Comment: pre-copy-editing, author-produced version of the published paper: 4

The Galactic Center Black Hole Laboratory
The super-massive 4 million solar mass black hole Sagittarius~A* (SgrA*)
shows flare emission from the millimeter to the X-ray domain. A detailed
analysis of the infrared light curves allows us to address the accretion
phenomenon in a statistical way. The analysis shows that the near-infrared
flare amplitudes are dominated by a single state power law, with the low states
in SgrA* limited by confusion through the unresolved stellar background. There
are several dusty objects in the immediate vicinity of SgrA*. The source G2/DSO
is one of them. Its nature is unclear. It may be comparable to similar stellar
dusty sources in the region or may consist predominantly of gas and dust. In
this case a particularly enhanced accretion activity onto SgrA* may be expected
in the near future. Here the interpretation of recent data and ongoing
observations are discussed.Comment: 30 pages - 7 figures - accepted for publication by Springer's
