    Measurements of total odd nitrogen (NOy) aboard MOZAIC in-service aircraft: instrument design, operation and performance

    A small system for the unattended measurement of total odd nitrogen (NOy, i.e., the sum of NO and its atmospheric oxidation products) aboard civil in-service aircraft in the framework of MOZAIC is described. The instrument employs the detection of NO by its chemiluminescence with O-3 in combination with catalytic conversion of the other NOy compounds to NO at 300degreesC on a gold surface in the presence of H-2. The instrument has a sensitivity of 0.4-0.7 cps/ppt and is designed for unattended operation during 1-2 service cycles of the aircraft (400-800 flight hours). The total weight is 50 kg, including calibration system, compressed gases, mounting, and safety measures. The layout and inlet configuration are governed by requirements due to the certification for passenger aircraft. Laboratory tests are described regarding the conversion efficiency for NO2 and HNO3 (both > 98%). Interference by non-NOy species is <1% for CH3CN and NH3, <5 x 10(-5) % for N2O (corresponding to <0.2 ppt fake NOy from ambient N2O) and 100% for HCN. The time response of the instrument is <1 s (90% change) for NO2. The response for HNO3 is nonlinear: 20 s for 67%, 60 s for 80%, and 150 s for 90% response, respectively

    Value-Chain Wide Food Waste Management: A Systematic Literature Review

The agriculture value chain, from farm to fork, has received enormous attention because of its key role in achieving United Nations Global Challenges Goals. Food waste occurs in many different forms and at all stages of the food value chain, it has become a worldwide issue that requires urgent actions. However, the management of food waste has been traditionally segmented and in an isolated manner. This paper reviews existing work that has been done on food waste management in literature by taking a holistic approach, in order to identify the causes of food waste, food waste prevention strategies, and elicit recommendations for future work. A five step systematic literature review has been adopted for a thorough examination of the existing research on the topic and new insights have been obtained. The findings suggest that the main sources of food waste include food overproduction and surplus, food waste caused by processing, logistical inconsistencies, and households. Main food waste prevention strategies have been revealed in this paper include policy solutions, packaging solutions, date-labelling solutions, logistics solutions, changing consumers’ behaviours, and reuse and redistribution solutions. Future research directions such as using value chain models to reduce food waste and forecasting food waste have been identified in this paper. This study makes a contribution to the extant literature in the field of food waste management by discovering main causes of food waste in the value chain and eliciting prevention strategies that can be used to reduce/eliminate relevant food waste

    Item does not contain fulltextAquaporin-2 (AQP2) missense mutants in recessive nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) are all retained in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), but some could function as water channels. No conclusions could be drawn about the water permeability (Pf) of others, because there was no method for quantifying AQP2 expression in the plasma membrane. We recently developed such a method, which has allowed us to study the functionality of these AQP2 mutants. Immunoblot analysis of membranes of injected oocytes revealed that all mutants (AQP2-G64R, AQP2-N68S, AQP2 T126M, AQP2-A147T, AQP2-R187C, AQP2-S216P) are expressed as unglycosylated and high-mannose glycosylated AQP2. The level of the high-mannose form of AQP2-A147T in the plasma membranes was low, indicating that this mutation has a less severe effect on proper folding. Analysis of Pf values and plasma membrane expression levels reveals that AQP2-N68S, AQP2-R187C and AQP2-S216P are non-functional, AQP2-A147T is as functional as wt-AQP2, while AQP2-T126M and AQP2-G64R retain 20% of the permeability of wt-AQP2. Since G64 is highly conserved between AQPs and expected to form essential interactions with other amino acids within AQP1, the residual functionality of AQP2-G64R is surprising. Our data furthermore indicate that an eventual therapy with chemical chaperones that restores the routing of AQP2 mutants to the apical membrane of collecting ducts cells might relieve NDI in patients encoding AQP2-A147T, and to a lesser extent AQP2-T126M and AQP2-G64R, but not in patients encoding AQP2-N68S, AQP2-R187C or AQP2-S216P
