Host plant range of a fruit fly community (Diptera: Tephritidae): Does fruit composition influence larval performance?
Background: Phytophagous insects differ in their degree of specialisation on host plants, and range from strictly monophagous species that can develop on only one host plant to extremely polyphagous species that can develop on hundreds of plant species in many families. Nutritional compounds in host fruits affect several larval traits that may be related to adult fitness. In this study, we determined the relationship between fruit nutrient composition and the degree of host specialisation of seven of the eight tephritid species present in La Réunion; these species are known to have very different host ranges in natura. In the laboratory, larval survival, larval developmental time, and pupal weight were assessed on 22 fruit species occurring in La Réunion. In addition, data on fruit nutritional composition were obtained from existing databases. Results: For each tephritid, the three larval traits were significantly affected by fruit species and the effects of fruits on larval traits differed among tephritids. As expected, the polyphagous species Bactrocera zonata, Ceratitis catoirii, C. rosa, and C. capitata were able to survive on a larger range of fruits than the oligophagous species Zeugodacus cucurbitae, Dacus demmerezi, and Neoceratitis cyanescens. Pupal weight was positively correlated with larval survival and was negatively correlated with developmental time for polyphagous species. Canonical correspondence analysis of the relationship between fruit nutrient composition and tephritid survival showed that polyphagous species survived better than oligophagous ones in fruits containing higher concentrations of carbohydrate, fibre, and lipid. Conclusion: Nutrient composition of host fruit at least partly explains the suitability of host fruits for larvae. Completed with female preferences experiments these results will increase our understanding of factors affecting tephritid host range. (Résumé d'auteur
Midterm follow-up after embolization of intracranial aneurysms proximal to the circle of Willis with the Silk Vista flow diverter: the I-MAMA registry
Purpose: The aim of this registry was to assess technical success, procedural safety and mid- to long-term follow-up results of the Silk Vista “Mama” (SVM) flow diverter (BALT, Montmorency, France) for the treatment of proximal intracranial aneurysms. Methods: Between August 2020 and March 2022, data from nine Italian neurovascular centres were collected. Data included patients’ clinical presentation, aneurysms’ size, location and status, technical details, overall complications and mid- to long-term angiographic follow-up. Results: Forty-eight aneurysms in 48 patients were treated using the SVM. Most aneurysms were small (≤ 10 mm: no. 29, 60%) and unruptured (no. 31, 65%); 13 aneurysms were recurrent after coiling or clipping. 37/48 aneurysms involved the internal carotid artery (77%). Optimal opening and complete wall apposition of the device were achieved in 46 out of 48 cases (96%). Four intra- or periprocedural complications occurred (two thrombotic complications successfully resolved, one cerebellar ischemia, one perirenal hematoma), without new neurological deficit. No significant intra-stent stenosis or stent displacement was observed during follow-up. No FD-related morbidity nor mortality was reported. At midterm (6–12 months) to long-term (> 12 months) follow-up, complete aneurysm occlusion (OKM D) was achieved in 76% of cases. Eighty-eight percent of patients had complete aneurysm occlusion or entry remnant (OKM D + C). Conclusions: Our experience suggests that the new generation of low-profile SVM flow diverter for the treatment of proximal intracranial aneurysms is safe and effective, with low rates of intraprocedural complications and acceptable mid- to long-term occlusion rate
A tetracationic porphyrin with dual anti-prion activity
Prions are deadly infectious agents made of PrPSc, a misfolded variant of the cellular prion protein (PrPC) which self-propagates by inducing misfolding of native PrPC. PrPSc can adopt different pathogenic conformations (prion strains), which can be resistant to potential drugs, or acquire drug resistance, hampering the development of effective therapies. We identified Zn(II)-BnPyP, a tetracationic porphyrin that binds to distinct domains of native PrPC, eliciting a dual anti-prion effect. Zn(II)-BnPyP binding to a C-terminal pocket destabilizes the native PrPC fold, hindering conversion to PrPSc; Zn(II)-BnPyP binding to the flexible N-terminal tail disrupts N- to C-terminal interactions, triggering PrPC endocytosis and lysosomal degradation, thus reducing the substrate for PrPSc generation. Zn(II)-BnPyP inhibits propagation of different prion strains in vitro, in neuronal cells and organotypic brain cultures. These results identify a PrPC-targeting compound with an unprecedented dual mechanism of action which might be exploited to achieve anti-prion effects without engendering drug resistance

New materials and devices for preventing catheter-related infections
Catheters are the leading source of bloodstream infections for patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Comprehensive unit-based programs have proven to be effective in decreasing catheter-related bloodstream infections (CR-BSIs). ICU rates of CR-BSI higher than 2 per 1,000 catheter-days are no longer acceptable. The locally adapted list of preventive measures should include skin antisepsis with an alcoholic preparation, maximal barrier precautions, a strict catheter maintenance policy, and removal of unnecessary catheters. The development of new technologies capable of further decreasing the now low CR-BSI rate is a major challenge. Recently, new materials that decrease the risk of skin-to-vein bacterial migration, such as new antiseptic dressings, were extensively tested. Antimicrobial-coated catheters can prevent CR-BSI but have a theoretical risk of selecting resistant bacteria. An antimicrobial or antiseptic lock may prevent bacterial migration from the hub to the bloodstream. This review discusses the available knowledge about these new technologies
Molecular Characterization of Podoviral Bacteriophages Virulent for Clostridium perfringens and Their Comparison with Members of the Picovirinae
Clostridium perfringens is a Gram-positive, spore-forming anaerobic bacterium responsible for human food-borne disease as well as non-food-borne human, animal and poultry diseases. Because bacteriophages or their gene products could be applied to control bacterial diseases in a species-specific manner, they are potential important alternatives to antibiotics. Consequently, poultry intestinal material, soil, sewage and poultry processing drainage water were screened for virulent bacteriophages that lysed C. perfringens. Two bacteriophages, designated ΦCPV4 and ΦZP2, were isolated in the Moscow Region of the Russian Federation while another closely related virus, named ΦCP7R, was isolated in the southeastern USA. The viruses were identified as members of the order Caudovirales in the family Podoviridae with short, non-contractile tails of the C1 morphotype. The genomes of the three bacteriophages were 17.972, 18.078 and 18.397 kbp respectively; encoding twenty-six to twenty-eight ORF's with inverted terminal repeats and an average GC content of 34.6%. Structural proteins identified by mass spectrometry in the purified ΦCP7R virion included a pre-neck/appendage with putative lyase activity, major head, tail, connector/upper collar, lower collar and a structural protein with putative lysozyme-peptidase activity. All three podoviral bacteriophage genomes encoded a predicted N-acetylmuramoyl-L-alanine amidase and a putative stage V sporulation protein. Each putative amidase contained a predicted bacterial SH3 domain at the C-terminal end of the protein, presumably involved with binding the C. perfringens cell wall. The predicted DNA polymerase type B protein sequences were closely related to other members of the Podoviridae including Bacillus phage Φ29. Whole-genome comparisons supported this relationship, but also indicated that the Russian and USA viruses may be unique members of the sub-family Picovirinae

Exploiting user feedback to compensate for the unreliability of user models
Natural Language is a powerful medium for interacting with users, and sophisticated computer systems using natural language are becoming more prevalent. Just as human speakers show an essential, inbuilt responsiveness to their hearers, computer systems must “tailor” their utterances to users. Recognizing this, researchers devised user models and strategies for exploiting them in order to enable systems to produce the “best” answer for a particular user.Because these efforts were largely devoted to investigating how a user model could be exploited to produce better responses, systems employing them typically assumed that a detailed and correct model of the user was available a priori, and that the information needed to generate appropriate responses was included in that model. However, in practice, the completeness and accuracy of a user model cannot be guaranteed. Thus, unless systems can compensate for incorrect or incomplete user models, the impracticality of building user models will prevent much of the work on tailoring from being successfully applied in real systems. In this paper, we argue that one way for a system to compensate for an unreliable user model is to be able to react to feedback from users about the suitability of the texts it produces. We also discuss how such a capability can actually alleviate some of the burden now placed on user modeling. Finally, we present a text generation system that employs whatever information is available in its user model in an attempt to produce satisfactory texts, but is also capable of responding to the user's follow-up questions about the texts it produces
