    Modeling the Population Demographics & Viability of Imperiled Guzmania monostachia Populations

    Guzmania monostachia is a large, long-lived bromeliad whose leaves grow in a rosette pattern and is native to the Americas, but endangered in Florida due to damage caused by the invasive weevil Metamasius callizona. Each G. monostachia rosette can reproduce sexually via flowers or asexually by producing clonal offshoot rosettes. We model the population dynamics and demographic structure of a G. monostachia population using a Lefkovitch matrix model where each state represents a demographic class of rosettes. Model analysis over a range of uncertain parameters show the conditions under which a G. monostachia population is viable in the absence and presence of M. callizona, and the expected demographic structure under those conditions. In particular, our analysis illustrates that proportional reductions in survival have a qualitatively stronger impact on population viability than proportion reductions in clonal fecundity

    The stress strain characteristics and mechanical properties of construction and demolition aggregate concrete at two different w/c ratios – 0.4 and 0.5 are presented in this study. The mechanical and stress strain characteristics of recycled aggregate concrete are compared to the properties and Stress strain characteristics of the conventional aggregate concrete. The mechanical properties include the cube and cylindrical compressive strength, Modulus of elasticity, flexural strength, split tensile strength and hardened density. Under stress strain characteristics, strain at peak stress and the energy absorbed under compression is included. The study aimed to correlate and compare the behaviour of recycled aggregate concrete and Conventional aggregate concrete having comparable strength. Finally, the experimental stress strain characteristics of the Recycled aggregate concrete is analysed for its compatibility of the assumed stress strain behaviour of concrete in IS 456. According to the findings, recycled aggregate concrete has similar stress-strain characteristics to conventional aggregate concrete of comparable strength, and existing stress block parameters can be suitably used for the recycled aggregate concrete

    Isolation and Purification of C-phycocyanin From Nostoc Muscorum (Cyanophyceae and Cyanobacteria) Exhibits Antimalarial Activity in Vitro

    The phycobilin pigments are intensively fluorescent and water soluble. They are categorized into three types, such as pigments containing high, intermediate and low energies are phycoerythrins (phycoerythrocyanins), phycocyanins and allophycocyanins, respectively. Besides light harvesting, the phycobiliproteins have shown industrial and biomedical importance. Among them, C-phycocyanin (C-PC) has been considered to be the most preferred one. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the antimalarial activity of C-PC isolated from a nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium and Nostoc muscorum. C-PC was extracted and purified by acetone extraction and ammonium sulfate precipitation and dialysis followed by amicon filtration. It was isolated as a~124 kDa water soluble protein molecule. It showed antimalarial activity in vitro against chloroquine sensitive and resistant Plasmodium falciparum strains. Inhibitory concentrations at 50%, 90% and 95% were determined as 10.27±2.79, 53.53±6.26 and 73.78±6.92 µg/ml against the chloroquine-sensitive strains; 10.37±1.43, 56.99±11.07 and 72.79±8.59 µg/ml against chloroquine resistant of Plasmodium falciparum strains. C-PC was found to have antimalarial activity even at a concentration of 3.0µg/ml. The possible mechanism might be relied on the destruction of polymerization of haemozoin by binding of C-PC with ferriprotoporphyrin-IX at the water surface of the plasma membrane

    Quadrature Strategies for Constructing Polynomial Approximations

    Finding suitable points for multivariate polynomial interpolation and approximation is a challenging task. Yet, despite this challenge, there has been tremendous research dedicated to this singular cause. In this paper, we begin by reviewing classical methods for finding suitable quadrature points for polynomial approximation in both the univariate and multivariate setting. Then, we categorize recent advances into those that propose a new sampling approach and those centered on an optimization strategy. The sampling approaches yield a favorable discretization of the domain, while the optimization methods pick a subset of the discretized samples that minimize certain objectives. While not all strategies follow this two-stage approach, most do. Sampling techniques covered include subsampling quadratures, Christoffel, induced and Monte Carlo methods. Optimization methods discussed range from linear programming ideas and Newton's method to greedy procedures from numerical linear algebra. Our exposition is aided by examples that implement some of the aforementioned strategies

    Despite advances in treatment for metastatic prostate cancer, patients eventually progress to castrate-resistant disease and ultimately succumb to their cancer. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is the standard treatment for metastatic prostate cancer and has been shown to improve median time to progression and median survival time. Research suggests that castrate-resistant clones may be present early in the disease process prior to the initiation of ADT. These clones are not susceptible to ADT and may even flourish when androgen-responsive clones are depleted. Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is a safe and efficacious method of treating clinically localized prostate cancer and metastases. In patients with a limited number of metastatic sites, SBRT may have a role in eliminating castrate-resistant clones and possibly delaying progression to castrate-resistant disease
