Simulation results are given to illustrate the efficacy of the technique.Comment: This version of the paper is an updated version of the initial submission, where some initial comments of reviewers have been taken into accoun

Three-pion exchange: a gap in the nucleon-nucleon potential

The leading contribution to the three-pion exchange nucleon-nucleon potential is calculated in the framework of chiral symmetry. It has pseudoscalar and axial components and is dominated by the former, which has a range of about 1.5 fm and tends to enhance the OPEP. The strength of this force does not depend on the pion mass and hence it survives in the chiral limit.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl

An assessment on the use of stationary vehicles to support cooperative positioning systems

Get PDF
In this paper, we evaluate the ability of stationary vehicles (e.g. parked or temporary stopped cars) as tools to enhance the capabilities of existing cooperative positioning algorithms in vehicular networks. First, some real-world facts are provided to support the feasibility of our ideas. Then, we examine the idea in greater details in terms of the technical requirements and methodological analysis, and provide a comprehensive experimental evaluation using dedicated simulations. The routing of a drone through an urban scenario is presented as a non-traditional application case, where the benefits of the proposed approach are reflected in a better utilisation of the flight time

The Palaeozoic basement of the Andean Frontal Cordillera at 34º S (Cordón del Carrizalito, Mendoza Province, Argentina): Geotectonic implications

Get PDF
The Cordón del Carrizalito is located in the southern sector of the Andean Frontal Cordillera. In this area, the Andean basement is composed of meta-sedimentary rocks (Las Lagunitas Formation) of Ordovician age. In addition, no- or very low grade metamorphism and less deformed rocks also occur in the study area. We call these rocks Selerpe series, whose characteristics are comparable to other series, late Carboniferous in age, described in nearby areas. The Las Lagunitas Formation is affected by west-verging folds, developed under low-grade metamorphic conditions. These structures can be attributed to the Chanic orogeny (Late Devonian – early Carboniferous). The Selerpe series and Las Lagunitas Formation are deformed by east-verging thrusts and folds developed in narrow bands and generated in the absence or under very low metamorphic conditions. These structures always deform the Chanic structures, and are attributed to the Gondwanan deformation (San Rafael orogeny, late Carboniferous – Permian in age). The Chanic structures of the study area can be placed in the western branch and in the hinterland of the Chanic orogen, which was developed as a result of the accretion of the Chilenia terrane at the west Gondwana margin during Late Devonian and early Carboniferous. The eastern branch of this orogen is located in the Andean Precordillera. The Permo-Triassic cover, deformed by the Andean orogenic cycle (Mesozoic – Cenozoic), rests unconformably on the Palaeozoic basement rocks.

Determination of the chiral coupling constants c3 and c4 in new pp and np partial-wave analyses

Get PDF
As a first result of two new partial-wave analyses, one of the pp and another one of the np scattering data below 500 MeV, we report a study of the long-range chiral two-pion exchange interaction which contains the chiral coupling constants c1, c3, and c4. By using as input a theoretical value for c1 we are able to determine in pp as well as in np scattering accurate values for c3 and c4. The values determined from the pp data and independently from the np data are in very good agreement, indicating the correctness of the chiral two-pion exchange interaction. The weighted averages are c3 = -4.78(10) / GeV and c4 = 3.96(22) / GeV, where the errors are statistical. The value of c3 is best determined from the pp data and that of c4 from the np data.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

Carbon and ecological footprints as tools for evaluating the environmental impact of coal mine ventilation air

Get PDF
Coal mines ventilation gases are an important source of methane emissions. Common ventilation systems are designed to ensure safe working conditions in the shafts, leading to huge ventilation gas flow rates. Traditionally, low attention has been paid to such emissions because of their low methane concentration. However, it is necessary to take into account that although the concentration of methane is very low (typically <1%), the volume of air that ventilation systems move is large, and therefore these emissions constitute the largest source of greenhouse gases from underground coal mines. This work proposes the use of ecological and carbon footprints approaches as a tool for determining the relative importance of these emissions in comparison to the other direct and indirect environmental impacts from the coal mining activity. The study has been performed in the main ventilations shafts of the mining company HUNOSA, located at NW Spain (bituminous coal). Results indicate that ventilation air methane is a key fraction of the total emissions of greenhouse gases releases in this activity (60–70%)

Central Nucleon-Nucleon Potential and Chiral Scalar Form Factor

Get PDF
The central two-pion exchange NN potential at large distances is studied in the framework of relativistic chiral symmetry and related directly to the nucleon scalar form factor, which describes the mass density of its pion cloud. This relationship is well supported by phenomenology and allows the dependence of the asymptotic potential on the nucleon mass to be assessed. Results in the heavy baryon limit are about 25% larger than those corresponding to the empirical nucleon mass in the region of physical interest. This indicates that it is very important to keep this mass finite in precise descriptions of the NN system and supports the efficacy of the relativistic chiral framework. One also estimates the contribution of subleading effects and presents a simple discussions of the role of the quark condensate in this problem.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure

The variety and serotype of 192 isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans isolated between 1972 and 1992 - 163 of clinical origin and 29 of environmental origin - was determined. In the clinical isolates two varieties of C. neoformans were identified: C. neoformans var. neoformans appeared in 92.6% of the patients and C. neoformans var. gattii in the other 7.4%. C. neoformansvar. neoformans was found in 100% of the environmental isolates. Serotype A was most frequently encountered, being observed in 92% of the clinical isolates and in 100% of the environmental isolates, followed by serotype B (6.8%). Serotype C (0.6%) and D (0.6%) isolates were also identified. C. neoformans var. neoformans was seen in every year during which isolates were recorded but C. neoformans var. gattii was only observed in clinical isolates from 1986 onwards. C. neoformans var. neoformans was isolated throughout the whole year and C. neoformans var. gattii was encountered only in the months of February, April, June, August, September and December. C. neoformans var. neoformans was observed in 109 strains (66.9%) from male patients and in 36 strains (22.1%) from female patients. C. neoformans var. gattii was observed in 5 strains (3%) from men and 6 (3.&%) from women.Se determinó l variedad y el serotipo de 192 aislamientos de Cryptococcus neoformans recuperados de 1972 a 1992; 163 de origen clínico y 29 del medio ambiente. Equivalence of the Path Integral for Fermions in Cartesian and Spherical Coordinates

The path-integral calculation for the free energy of a spin-1/2 Dirac-fermion gas is performed in spherical polar coordinates for a flat spacetime geometry. Its equivalence with the Cartesian-coordinate representation is explicitly established. This evaluation involves a relevant limiting case of the fermionic path integral in a Schwarzschild background, whose near-horizon limit has been shown to be related to black hole thermodynamics.Comment: 16 page

Quark Condensate in the Deuteron

Get PDF
We study the changes produced by the deuteron on the QCD quark condensate by means the Feynman-Hellmann theorem and find that the pion mass dependence of the pion-nucleon coupling could play an important role. We also discuss the relation between the many body effect of the condensate and the meson exchange currents, as seen by photons and pions. For pion probes, the many-body term in the physical amplitude differs significantly from that of soft pions, the one linked to the condensate. Thus no information about the many-body term of the condensate can be extracted from the pion-deuteron scattering length. On the other hand, in the Compton amplitude, the relationship with the condensate is a more direct one.Comment: to appear in Physics Review C (19 pages, 3 figures
