On noise treatment in radio measurements of cosmic ray air showers
Precise measurements of the radio emission by cosmic ray air showers require
an adequate treatment of noise. Unlike to usual experiments in particle
physics, where noise always adds to the signal, radio noise can in principle
decrease or increase the signal if it interferes by chance destructively or
constructively. Consequently, noise cannot simply be subtracted from the
signal, and its influence on amplitude and time measurement of radio pulses
must be studied with care. First, noise has to be determined consistently with
the definition of the radio signal which typically is the maximum field
strength of the radio pulse. Second, the average impact of noise on radio pulse
measurements at individual antennas is studied for LOPES. It is shown that a
correct treatment of noise is especially important at low signal-to-noise
ratios: noise can be the dominant source of uncertainty for pulse height and
time measurements, and it can systematically flatten the slope of lateral
distributions. The presented method can also be transfered to other experiments

The LOPES experiment - recent results, status and perspectives
The LOPES experiment at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology has been taking
radio data in the frequency range from 40 to 80 MHz in coincidence with the
KASCADE-Grande air shower detector since 2003. Various experimental
configurations have been employed to study aspects such as the energy scaling,
geomagnetic dependence, lateral distribution, and polarization of the radio
emission from cosmic rays. The high quality per-event air shower information
provided by KASCADE-Grande has been the key to many of these studies and has
even allowed us to perform detailed per-event comparisons with simulations of
the radio emission. In this article, we give an overview of results obtained by

Results from the KASCADE, KASCADE-Grande, and LOPES experiments
The origin of high-energy cosmic rays in the energy range from 10^14 to 10^18
eV is explored with the KASCADE and KASCADE-Grande experiments. Radio signals
from air showers are measured with the LOPES experiment. An overview on results

Single particle trajectories reveal active endoplasmic reticulum luminal flow
The endoplasmic reticulum (ER), a network of membranous sheets and pipes, supports functions encompassing biogenesis of secretory proteins and delivery of functional solutes throughout the cell[1, 2]. Molecular mobility through the ER network enables these functionalities, but diffusion alone is not sufficient to explain luminal transport across supramicrometre distances. Understanding the ER structure–function relationship is critical in light of mutations in ER morphology-regulating proteins that give rise to neurodegenerative disorders[3, 4]. Here, super-resolution microscopy and analysis of single particle trajectories of ER luminal proteins revealed that the topological organization of the ER correlates with distinct trafficking modes of its luminal content: with a dominant diffusive component in tubular junctions and a fast flow component in tubules. Particle trajectory orientations resolved over time revealed an alternating current of the ER contents, while fast ER super-resolution identified energy-dependent tubule contraction events at specific points as a plausible mechanism for generating active ER luminal flow. Understanding recovery in the context of lived experience of personality disorders: a collaborative, qualitative research study
Background
Concepts of recovery increasingly inform the development and delivery of mental health services internationally. In the UK recent policy advocates the application of recovery concepts to the treatment of personality disorders. However diagnosis and understanding of personality disorders remains contested, challenging any assumption that mainstream recovery thinking can be directly translated into personality disorders services.
Methods
In a qualitative interview-based study understandings of recovery were explored in extended, in-depth interviews with six people purposively sampled from a specialist personality disorders’ service in the UK. An interpretive, collaborative approach to research was adopted in which university-, clinical- and service user (consumer) researchers were jointly involved in carrying out interviews and analysing interview data.
Results
Findings suggested that recovery cannot be conceptualised separately from an understanding of the lived experience of personality disorders. This experience was characterised by a complexity of ambiguous, interrelating and conflicting feelings, thoughts and actions as individuals tried to cope with tensions between internally and externally experienced worlds. Our analysis was suggestive of a process of recovering or, for some, discovering a sense of self that can safely coexist in both worlds.
Conclusions
We conclude that key facilitators of recovery – positive personal relationships and wider social interaction – are also where the core vulnerabilities of individuals with lived experience of personaility disorders can lie. There is a role for personality disorders services in providing a safe space in which to develop positive relationships. Through discursive practice within the research team understandings of recovery were co-produced that responded to the lived experience of personality disorders and were of applied relevance to practitioners
Early surgery versus initial conservative treatment in patients with spontaneous supratentorial lobar intracerebral haematomas (STICH II):a randomised trial
SummaryBackgroundThe balance of risk and benefit from early neurosurgical intervention for conscious patients with superficial lobar intracerebral haemorrhage of 10–100 mL and no intraventricular haemorrhage admitted within 48 h of ictus is unclear. We therefore tested the hypothesis that early surgery compared with initial conservative treatment could improve outcome in these patients.MethodsIn this international, parallel-group trial undertaken in 78 centres in 27 countries, we compared early surgical haematoma evacuation within 12 h of randomisation plus medical treatment with initial medical treatment alone (later evacuation was allowed if judged necessary). An automatic telephone and internet-based randomisation service was used to assign patients to surgery and initial conservative treatment in a 1:1 ratio. The trial was not masked. The primary outcome was a prognosis-based dichotomised (favourable or unfavourable) outcome of the 8 point Extended Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOSE) obtained by questionnaires posted to patients at 6 months. Analysis was by intention to treat. This trial is registered, number ISRCTN22153967.Findings307 of 601 patients were randomly assigned to early surgery and 294 to initial conservative treatment; 298 and 291 were followed up at 6 months, respectively; and 297 and 286 were included in the analysis, respectively. 174 (59%) of 297 patients in the early surgery group had an unfavourable outcome versus 178 (62%) of 286 patients in the initial conservative treatment group (absolute difference 3·7% [95% CI −4·3 to 11·6], odds ratio 0·86 [0·62 to 1·20]; p=0·367).InterpretationThe STICH II results confirm that early surgery does not increase the rate of death or disability at 6 months and might have a small but clinically relevant survival advantage for patients with spontaneous superficial intracerebral haemorrhage without intraventricular haemorrhage.FundingUK Medical Research Council
