The Demand Side Determinate of NFL Ticket Prices
We study the demand-side determinants of average NFL ticket prices using a panel model for the years 2010 to 2013. We estimate the average ticket price as a function of income, population, the housing price index, winning percentage from the previous season, and other professional sports teams in the metropolitan area of each team. Our results indicate that income has the largest effect on the average NFL ticket price. The number of other professional sports teams was found to have the smallest effect in the average NFL ticket price
Galaxy Counts, Sizes, Colours and Redshifts in the Hubble Deep Field
We compare the galaxy evolution models of Bruzual & Charlot (1993) with the
faint galaxy count, size and colour data from the Hubble and Herschel Deep
Fields (Metcalfe et al 1996). For qo=0.05, we find that models where the SFR
increases exponentially out to z>2 are consistent with all of the observational
data. For qo=0.5, such models require an extra population of galaxies which are
only seen at high redshift and then rapidly fade or disappear. We find that,
whatever the cosmology, the redshift of the faint blue galaxies and hence the
epoch of galaxy formation is likely to lie at z>2. We find no implied peak in
the SFR at z=1 and we suggest that the reasons for this contradiction with the
results of Madau et al (1996) include differences in faint galaxy photometry,
in the treatment of spiral dust and in the local galaxy count normalisation.Comment: 8 pages, 5 eps figures, needs paspconf.st
Evolution of hierarchical clustering in the CFHTLS-Wide since z~1
We present measurements of higher order clustering of galaxies from the
latest release of the Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS)
Wide. We construct a volume-limited sample of galaxies that contains more than
one million galaxies in the redshift range 0.2<z<1 distributed over the four
independent fields of the CFHTLS. We use a counts in cells technique to measure
the variance and the hierarchical moments S_n = /^(n-1)
(3<n<5) as a function of redshift and angular scale.The robustness of our
measurements if thoroughly tested, and the field-to-field scatter is in very
good agreement with analytical predictions. At small scales, corresponding to
the highly non-linear regime, we find a suggestion that the hierarchical
moments increase with redshift. At large scales, corresponding to the weakly
non-linear regime, measurements are fully consistent with perturbation theory
predictions for standard LambdaCDM cosmology with a simple linear bias.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, submitted to MNRA
Star-forming galaxies versus low- and high-excitation radio AGN in the VLA-COSMOS 3GHz Large Project
We study the composition of the faint radio population selected from the
VLA-COSMOS 3GHz Large Project, a radio continuum survey performed at 10 cm
wavelength. The survey covers the full 2 square degree COSMOS field with mean
Jy/beam, cataloging 10,899 source components above . By combining these radio data with UltraVISTA, optical, near-infrared,
and Spitzer/IRAC mid-infrared data, as well as X-ray data from the Chandra
Legacy, and Chandra COSMOS surveys, we gain insight into the emission
mechanisms within our radio sources out to redshifts of . From these
emission characteristics we classify our souces as star forming galaxies or
AGN. Using their multi-wavelength properties we further separate the AGN into
sub-samples dominated by radiatively efficient and inefficient AGN, often
referred to as high- and low-excitation emission line AGN. We compare our
method with other results based on fitting of the sources' spectral energy
distributions using both galaxy and AGN spectral models, and those based on the
infrared-radio correlation. We study the fractional contributions of these
sub-populations down to radio flux levels of 10 Jy. We find that at
3 GHz flux densities above 400 Jy quiescent, red galaxies,
consistent with the low-excitation radio AGN class constitute the dominant
fraction. Below densities of 200 Jy star-forming galaxies begin to
constitute the largest fraction, followed by the low-excitation, and X-ray- and

Validation of the Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire-8 in an Australian pain clinic sample
Background: Recently, an 8-item short-form version of the Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire (CPAQ-8) was developed predominantly in an internet sample. Further investigation of the factor structure in a multidisciplinary pain clinic sample is required. Investigation of the concurrent validity of the CPAQ-8 after accounting for the effects of variables commonly measured in the pain clinic setting is also necessary. Purpose: This study examines the factor structure and concurrent validity of the CPAQ-8 in a sample of treatmentseeking patients who attended a multidisciplinary pain clinic. Methods: Participants were 334 patients who attended an Australian multidisciplinary pain service. Participants completed the CPAQ, a demographic questionnaire, and measures of patient adjustment and functioning. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis identified a two-factor 8-item model consisting of Activity Engagement and Pain Willingness factors (SRMR=0.039, RMSEA=0.063, CFI=0.973, TLI=0.960) was superior to both the CPAQ and CPAQ with an item removed. The CPAQ and CPAQ-8 total scores were highly correlated (r=0.93). After accounting for pain intensity, the CPAQ-8 was a significant predictor of depression, anxiety, stress, and disability. The subscales of the CPAQ-8 were both unique contributors to depression and disability in regression analyses, after accounting for pain intensity and kinesiophobia, and after accounting for pain intensity and catastrophizing. Conclusions: The CPAQ-8 has a sound factor structure and similar psychometric properties to the CPAQ; it may have clinical utility as a measure of pain acceptance in treatmentseeking, chronic pain patients
Rest-UV Absorption Lines as Metallicity Estimator: the Metal Content of Star-Forming Galaxies at z~5
We measure a relation between the depth of four prominent rest-UV absorption
complexes and metallicity for local galaxies and verify it up to z~3. We then
apply this relation to a sample of 224 galaxies at 3.5 = 4.8) in
COSMOS, for which unique UV spectra from DEIMOS and accurate stellar masses
from SPLASH are available. The average galaxy population at z~5 and log(M/Msun)
> 9 is characterized by 0.3-0.4 dex (in units of 12+log(O/H)) lower
metallicities than at z~2, but comparable to z~3.5. We find galaxies with
weak/no Ly-alpha emission to have metallicities comparable to z~2 galaxies and
therefore may represent an evolved sub-population of z~5 galaxies. We find a
correlation between metallicity and dust in good agreement with local galaxies
and an inverse trend between metallicity and star-formation rate (SFR)
consistent with observations at z~2. The relation between stellar mass and
metallicity (MZ relation) is similar to z~3.5, however, there are indications
of it being slightly shallower, in particular for the young, Ly-alpha emitting
galaxies. We show that, within a "bathtub" approach, a shallower MZ relation is
expected in the case of a fast (exponential) build-up of stellar mass with an
e-folding time of 100-200 Myr. Due to this fast evolution, the process of dust
production and metal enrichment as a function of mass could be more stochastic
