    Field theoretic formulation of a mode-coupling equation for colloids

    The only available quantitative description of the slowing down of the dynamics upon approaching the glass transition has been, so far, the mode-coupling theory, developed in the 80's by G\"otze and collaborators. The standard derivation of this theory does not result from a systematic expansion. We present a field theoretic formulation that arrives at very similar mode-coupling equation but which is based on a variational principle and on a controlled expansion in a small dimensioneless parameter. Our approach applies to such physical systems as colloids interacting via a mildly repulsive potential. It can in principle, with moderate efforts, be extended to higher orders and to multipoint correlation functions

    Polar coding, introduced 2008 by Arikan, is the first (very) efficiently encodable and decodable coding scheme whose information transmission rate provably achieves the Shannon bound for classical discrete memoryless channels in the asymptotic limit of large block sizes. Here we study the use of polar codes for the transmission of quantum information. Focusing on the case of qubit Pauli channels and qubit erasure channels, we use classical polar codes to construct a coding scheme which, using some pre-shared entanglement, asymptotically achieves a net transmission rate equal to the coherent information using efficient encoding and decoding operations and code construction.     Experimental hut evaluation of bednets treated with an organophosphate (chlorpyrifos-methyl) or a pyrethroid (lambdacyhalothrin) alone and in combination against insecticide-resistant Anopheles gambiae and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes

    BACKGROUND: Pyrethroid resistant mosquitoes are becoming increasingly common in parts of Africa. It is important to identify alternative insecticides which, if necessary, could be used to replace or supplement the pyrethroids for use on treated nets. Certain compounds of an earlier generation of insecticides, the organophosphates may have potential as net treatments. METHODS: Comparative studies of chlorpyrifos-methyl (CM), an organophosphate with low mammalian toxicity, and lambdacyhalothrin (L), a pyrethroid, were conducted in experimental huts in CĂ´te d'Ivoire, West Africa. Anopheles gambiae and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes from the area are resistant to pyrethroids and organophosphates (kdr and insensitive acetylcholinesterase Ace.1(R)). Several treatments and application rates on intact or holed nets were evaluated, including single treatments, mixtures, and differential wall/ceiling treatments. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: All of the treatments were effective in reducing blood feeding from sleepers under the nets and in killing both species of mosquito, despite the presence of the kdr and Ace.1(R )genes at high frequency. In most cases, the effects of the various treatments did not differ significantly. Five washes of the nets in soap solution did not reduce the impact of the insecticides on A. gambiae mortality, but did lead to an increase in blood feeding. The three combinations performed no differently from the single insecticide treatments, but the low dose mixture performed encouragingly well indicating that such combinations might be used for controlling insecticide resistant mosquitoes. Mortality of mosquitoes that carried both Ace.1(R )and Ace.1(S )genes did not differ significantly from mosquitoes that carried only Ace.1(S )genes on any of the treated nets, indicating that the Ace.1(R )allele does not confer effective resistance to chlorpyrifos-methyl under the realistic conditions of an experimental hut

    We consider continuous time nonlinear time varying systems that are globally asymptotically stabilizable by state feedbacks. We study the stability of these systems in closed loop with controls that are corrupted by both delay and sampling.     International audienceThe culture and manufacturing of the cotton fabric used to make your Jeans’ may have implied the use of fertilizers or pesticides polluting a water basin, have led to relocating people and even of children labour at different stages of its fabrication. As a consumer you probably didn’t take all these consequences into account (for your sake most of the information is not available, or value-wise you feel unconcerned) and you surely preferred to buy the cheapest one or to follow the fashion trend. Basically, every economic or public activity has repercussions directly, or through a chain of consequences on the environment and the society. In order to try and measure those impacts, or to valuate one choice (Jeans’ L) compared to another (Jeans’ P&J), several assessment methods have been developed and are frequently used. As a self-evident truth, assessment methods are instruments used to evaluate something. These could include measuring a performance on a specific case. In terms of evaluating policies and strategies, their possible outcomes are intended to evaluate their potential impacts. This refers to impact assessment in which past (already implemented actions) or future (ex-ante analysis) performances are studied

    Soliton binding and low-lying singlets in frustrated odd-legged S=1/2 spin tubes

    Motivated by the intriguing properties of the vanadium spin tube Na2V3O7, we show that an effective spin-chirality model similar to that of standard Heisenberg odd-legged S=1/2 spin tubes can be derived for frustrated inter-ring couplings, but with a spin-chirality coupling constant alpha that can be arbitrarily small. Using density matrix renormalization group and analytical arguments, we show that, while spontaneous dimerization is always present, solitons become bound into low-lying singlets as alpha is reduced. Experimental implications for strongly frustrated tubes are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
