    A Systematic Analysis of the Memory term in Coarse-Grained models: the case of the Markovian Approximation

    The systematic development of Coarse-Grained (CG) models via the Mori-Zwanzig projector operator formalism requires the explicit description of several terms, including a deterministic drift term, a dissipative memory term and a random fluctuation term. In many applications, the memory and fluctuation terms are related by the fluctuation-dissipation relation and are, in general, more challenging to derive than the drift term. In this work we analyse an approximation of the memory term and propose a rational basis for a data-driven approach to an approximation of the memory and fluctuating terms which can be considered included in the class of the Markovian ones.Comment: 39 pages, 2 Figure

    Simulation of macromolecule self-assembly in solution: a multiscale approach

    One of the most common processes to produce polymer nanoparticles is to induce self-assembly by using the solvent-displacement method, in which the polymer is dissolved in a "good" solvent and the solution is then mixed with an "anti-solvent". The polymer ability to self-assemble in solution is therefore determined by its structural and transport properties in solutions of the pure solvents and at the intermediate compositions. In this work, we focus on poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) which is a biocompatible polymer that finds widespread application in the pharmaceutical and biomedical fields, performing simulation at three different scales using three different computational tools: full atomistic molecular dynamics (MD), population balance modeling (PBM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Simulations consider PCL chains of different molecular weight in solution of pure acetone (good solvent), of pure water (anti-solvent) and their mixtures, and mixing at different rates and initial concentrations in a confined impinging jets mixer (CIJM). Our MD simulations reveal that the nano-structuring of one of the solvents in the mixture leads to an unexpected identical polymer structure irrespectively of the concentration of the two solvents. In particular, although in pure solvents the behavior of the polymer is, as expected, very different, at intermediate compositions, the PCL chain shows properties very similar to those found in pure acetone as a result of the clustering of the acetone molecules in the vicinity of the polymer chain. We derive an analytical expression to predict the polymer structural properties in solution at different solvent compositions and use it to formulate an aggregation kernel to describe the self-assembly in the CIJM via PBM and CFD.     Numerical simulation of crust freezing in processed meat: A fully coupled solid–fluid approach

    We present a numerical model for the simulation of continuous impinge ment freezing of processed food products. This model is capable of fully describing the fluid dynamics of the non-isothermal flow field, including turbulence with conjugate heat transfer (CHT). The motion of the solid region is captured by advecting the solid rathe than employing a moving mesh algorithm, resulting in a model that is more computationally efficient. This methodology is implemented as a numerical solver using the well-known open-source library OpenFOAM.     Management of bile duct injuries after cholecystectomy: Therapeutic approach and examination of possible sources of error. Report of 2 cases

    Background: Bile duct injuries is the primary concern of general surgeons during and after cholecystectomy, with an incidence ranging from 0.08% to 0.4%. Through the description of two cases we intend to discuss the management of most frequent types of bile duct injuries after cholecystectomy and examine some possible sources of error. Case reports: We have treated 2 cases previously operated by other surgical teams. Case report 1: patient undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy with lesion of the main bile duct, treated with its reconstruction with positioning of a T-drainage tube. Case report 2: patient with jaundice previously treated for incarcerated incisional hernia and gallbladder stones. We verified the presence of a stenosis of the main bile duct which was resolved with the positioning of a T-tube drainage Discussion: Many descriptions and classifications regarding iatrogenic lesions of the bile duct after cholecystectomy have been described, although some of them represent a good guide on the surgical approach to be adopted, but the surgical skills possessed by the operator remain the most important variables Conclusions: All possible precautions must be considered in order to avoid the possibility of damaging the biliary tree. In our opinion an anterograde approach during cholecystectomy offers greater safety

    Infrared Behavior of Interacting Bosons at Zero Temperature

    We exploit the symmetries associated with the stability of the superfluid phase to solve the long-standing problem of interacting bosons in the presence of a condensate at zero temperature. Implementation of these symmetries poses strong conditions on the renormalizations that heal the singularities of perturbation theory. The renormalized theory gives: For d>3 the Bogoliubov quasiparticles as an exact result; for 1<d<=3 a nontrivial solution with the exact exponent for the singular longitudinal correlation function, with phonons again as low-lying excitations.Comment: Minor Changes. 4 pages, RevTeX, no figures, uses multicol.sty e-mail: [email protected]

    Renormalization Group Approach to the Infrared Behavior of a Zero-Temperature Bose System

    We exploit the renormalization-group approach to establish the {\em exact} infrared behavior of an interacting Bose system at zero temperature. The local-gauge symmetry in the broken-symmetry phase is implemented through the associated Ward identities, which reduce the number of independent running couplings to a single one. For this coupling the ϵ\epsilon-expansion can be controlled to all orders in ϵ\epsilon (=3d=3-d). For spatial dimensions 1<d31 < d \leq 3 the Bogoliubov fixed point is unstable towards a different fixed point characterized by the divergence of the longitudinal correlation function. The Bogoliubov linear spectrum, however, is found to be independent from the critical behavior of this correlation function, being exactly constrained by Ward identities. The new fixed point properly gives a finite value of the coupling among transverse fluctuations, but due to virtual intermediate longitudinal fluctuations the effective coupling affecting the transverse correlation function flows to zero. As a result, no transverse anomalous dimension is present. This treatment allows us to recover known results for the quantum Bose gas in the context of a unifying framework and also to reveal the non-trivial skeleton structure of its perturbation theory.Comment: 21 page

    Antibiotic therapy, supportive treatment and management of immunomodulation-inflammation response in community acquired pneumonia: review of recommendations

    Community-acquired pneumonia is a common and serious disease, with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Management and treatment of community-acquired pneumonia are described in three main documents: the 2007 American Thoracic Society guidelines, the 2011 European Respiratory Society guidelines, and the 2009 British Thoracic Society guidelines, updated by the NICE in 2015. Despite the validity of current guidelines in improving prognosis and management of patients with community-acquired pneumonia, not all recommendations have high levels of evidence and there are still some controversial issues. In particular, there are some areas of low evidence such as the efficacy of an antibiotic molecule or scheme in patients with same risk factors; duration of antibiotic treatment, supportive therapy for acute respiratory failure and immunomodulation molecules. This review will summarize the main recommendations with high level of evidence and discuss the recommendations with lower evidence, analyzing the studies published after the guidelines' release

    Delivery status of the ELI-NP gamma beam system

    International audienceThe ELI-NP GBS is a high intensity and monochromatic gamma source under construction in Magurele (Romania). The design and construction of the Gamma Beam System complex as well as the integration of the technical plants and the commissioning of the overall facility, was awarded to the Eurogammas Consortium in March 2014. The delivery of the facility has been planned in for 4 stages and the first one was fulfilled in October 31st 2015. The engineering aspects related to the delivery stage 1 are presented
