    Core formation on Mars and differentiated asteroids

    Meteorite chronometry based on the Hf-182-W-182 system can provide powerful constraints on the timing of planetary accretion and differentiation(1-4), although the full potential of this method has yet to be realized. For example, no measurements have been made on the silicate-rich portions of planets and planetesimals other than the Earth and Moon. Here we report tungsten isotope compositions for two eucrites, thought to be derived from asteroid 4 Vesta, and from eight other basaltic achondritic meteorites that are widely considered to be from Mars. The eucrites, which are among the oldest differentiated meteorites, yield exceedingly radiogenic tungsten, indicating rapid accretion, differentiation and core formation on Vesta within the first 5-15 Myr of Solar System history, whereas the range of radiogenic tungsten measurements on the martian meteorites points towards tungsten depletion via melting and core formation within the first 30 Myr of the Solar System. The survival of tungsten isotope heterogeneity in the martian upper mantle implies that no giant impacts or large-scale convective mixing took place since this time, These results contrast with those obtained for the Earth-Moon system(2,3) for which accretion and core formation related to giant impacts appears to have continued for at least an additional 20 Myr.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/62720/1/388854a0.pd

    Community empowerment and mental wellbeing: longitudinal findings from a survey of people actively involved in the big local place-based initiative in England

    Background: Community empowerment initiatives are receiving increased interest as ways of improving health and reducing health inequalities. Purpose: Longitudinally examine associations between collective control, social-cohesion and mental wellbeing amongst participants in the Big Local community empowerment initiative across 150 disadvantaged areas of England. Methods: As part of the independent Communities in Control study, we analysed nested cohort survey data on mental wellbeing (Short Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale—SWEMWBS) and perceptions of collective control and social-cohesion. Data were obtained in 2016, 2018 and 2020 for 217 residents involved in the 150 Big Local areas in England. Adjusted linear mixed effect models were utilized to examine changes in SWEMWBS over the three waves. Subgroup analysis by gender and educational level was conducted. Results: There was a significant 1.46 (0.14, 2.77) unit increase in mental wellbeing score at wave 2 (2018) but not in wave 3 (2020) (0.06 [−1.41, 1.53]). Across all waves, collective control was associated with a significantly higher mental wellbeing score (3.36 [1.51, 5.21]) as was social cohesion (1.09 [0.19, 2.00]). Higher educated participants (1.99 [0.14, 3.84]) and men (2.41 [0.55, 4.28]) experienced significant increases in mental wellbeing in 2018, but lower educated participants and women did not. Conclusion: Collective control and social cohesion are associated with better mental wellbeing amongst residents engaged with the Big Local initiative. These health benefits were greater amongst men and participants from higher educational backgrounds. This suggests that additional care must be taken in future interventions to ensure that benefits are distributed equally

    Asymptotics of Expansion of the Evolution Operator Kernel in Powers of Time Interval Δt\Delta t

    The upper bound for asymptotic behavior of the coefficients of expansion of the evolution operator kernel in powers of the time interval \Dt was obtained. It is found that for the nonpolynomial potentials the coefficients may increase as n!n!. But increasing may be more slow if the contributions with opposite signs cancel each other. Particularly, it is not excluded that for number of the potentials the expansion is convergent. For the polynomial potentials \Dt-expansion is certainly asymptotic one. The coefficients increase in this case as Γ(nL−2L+2)\Gamma(n \frac{L-2}{L+2}), where LL is the order of the polynom. It means that the point \Dt=0 is singular point of the kernel.Comment: 12 pp., LaTe

    Convergence of the Optimized Delta Expansion for the Connected Vacuum Amplitude: Zero Dimensions

    Recent proofs of the convergence of the linear delta expansion in zero and in one dimensions have been limited to the analogue of the vacuum generating functional in field theory. In zero dimensions it was shown that with an appropriate, NN-dependent, choice of an optimizing parameter \l, which is an important feature of the method, the sequence of approximants ZNZ_N tends to ZZ with an error proportional to e−cN{\rm e}^{-cN}. In the present paper we establish the convergence of the linear delta expansion for the connected vacuum function W=ln⁡ZW=\ln Z. We show that with the same choice of \l the corresponding sequence WNW_N tends to WW with an error proportional to e−cN{\rm e}^{-c\sqrt N}.     Halpha-Derived Star-Formation Rates For Three z ~ 0.75 EDisCS Galaxy Clusters

    We present Halpha-derived star-formation rates (SFRs) for three z ~ 0.75 galaxy clusters. Our 1 sigma flux limit corresponds to a star-formation rate of 0.10-0.24 solar mass per year, and our minimum reliable Halpha + [N II] rest-frame equivalent width is 10\AA. We show that Halpha narrowband imaging is an efficient method for measuring star formation in distant clusters. In two out of three clusters, we find that the fraction of star-forming galaxies increases with projected distance from the cluster center. We also find that the fraction of star-forming galaxies decreases with increasing local galaxy surface density in the same two clusters. We compare the median rate of star formation among star-forming cluster galaxies to a small sample of star-forming field galaxies from the literature and find that the median cluster SFRs are \~50% less than the median field SFR. We characterize cluster evolution in terms of the mass-normalized integrated cluster SFR and find that the z ~ 0.75 clusters have more SFR per cluster mass on average than the z <= 0.4 clusters from the literature. The interpretation of this result is complicated by the dependence of the mass-normalized SFR on cluster mass and the lack of sufficient overlap in the mass ranges covered by the low and high redshift samples. We find that the fraction and luminosities of the brightest starburst galaxies at z ~ 0.75 are consistent with their being progenitors of the post-starburst galaxies at z ~ 0.45 if the post-starburst phase lasts several (~5) times longer than the starburst phase.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 20 pages, 24 figure

    Formation and Structure of a Current Sheet in Pulsed-Power Driven Magnetic Reconnection Experiments

    We describe magnetic reconnection experiments using a new, pulsed-power driven experimental platform in which the inflows are super-sonic but sub-Alfv\'enic.The intrinsically magnetised plasma flows are long lasting, producing a well-defined reconnection layer that persists over many hydrodynamic time scales.The layer is diagnosed using a suite of high resolution laser based diagnostics which provide measurements of the electron density, reconnecting magnetic field, inflow and outflow velocities and the electron and ion temperatures.Using these measurements we observe a balance between the power flow into and out of the layer, and we find that the heating rates for the electrons and ions are significantly in excess of the classical predictions. The formation of plasmoids is observed in laser interferometry and optical self-emission, and the magnetic O-point structure of these plasmoids is confirmed using magnetic probes.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures.     Universality, vortices and confinement: modified SO(3) lattice gauge theory at non-zero temperature

    We investigate the adjoint SU(2) lattice gauge theory in 3+1 dimensions with the Wilson plaquette action modified by a Z(2) monopole suppression term.
