    Performance of Different Tomato Genotypes in the Arid Tropics of Sudan during the Summer Season. I. Vegetative Growth

    Selected, eleven tomato genotypes of diverse origin were grown in a glasshouse of the Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany during 2002 and under field conditions in Shambat, University of Khartoum, Sudan for two successive seasons (2002/2003, 2003/2004). High temperatures under field conditions resulted in poor stand and stunted growth of tomato plants. Highly significant differences were encountered among the different genotypes for leaf area, leaf area ratio, leaf weight ratio, stem fresh and dry weight and leaf fresh and dry weight. Based on results obtained from this study, the genotype ‘Summerset’ proved to be more tolerant under high temperature conditions in comparison to other investigated genotypes and may be useful for exploitation under arid tropical region of Sudan

    Measuring tactical creativity with the help of divergent thought: Example of TRNC U-21 football teams

    This study aims on the assessment of the situations of tactical orientation of 36 young, elite soccer players born in the years 1999-2000-2001, selected between 2 cities, 6 teams which belong to Cyprus Turkish Football Association (Kıbrıs Türk Futbol Federasyonu) in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. This study evaluates the aspects in two ways. In order to evaluate the tactical directed situations, specific tactics and creative performance were measured with respect to Game Test. In case 1, Longitudinal design was carried to analyse intra-individual improvements of elite young football players according to football-specific creativity and tactical game intelligence by using a dynamic performance diagnostic tool. In case 2, cross-sectional design was carried in which objective, valid, differentiative enough to record, tactical indicators were created to measure football-specific creativity and game intelligence as a diagnostic instrument. In both of the studies, different evaluation criteria were spotted and with these criteria, players were scored. According to these scores, divergent tactical thinking results has been obtained. The results according to divergent tactical thinking showed that disparate changes were obtained in between the players of KTFF U-21. As a result, the practical implications for the processes of training has been deeply discussed in both cases

    Hybrid systems for robotic navigations

    This paper presents a development of hardware and software of hybrid systems for autonomous robot navigation. The task for this robot is to navigate through a given field and throwing shuttlecocks through a hoop to dedicated zones. It is vital for the robot to have navigational systems for robot movement. This work develops a robot with hybrid systems using encoder, digital fiber sensor and fiber optic sensor. This work embraced mechanical parts and programming parts for robot navigations. To achieve this smooth navigation, rotary encoder was embedded on the robot tails, and left and right side of the robot. This will enable the robot to move in correct positioning. Furthermore, digital fiber sensor is used for color detection as each color gives difference response, and fiber optic sensor for detection of hindrance or fence. The hybrid approach is observed to be competent for the robot to navigate autonomously and effectively in unknown environments. It has been shown that the motion of the robot can be operated as target conditions and shows that color and hindrance or fence plays an important role in navigation system

    Fournier's Gangrene: Conventional Dressings versus Dressings with Dakin's Solution

    Purpose. Fournier's gangrene is a fulminant and destructive inflammation of the scrotum, penis, and perineum. The objective of this study was to compare 2 different approaches to wound management after aggressive surgical debridement. Methods. Data from 14 patients with Fournier's gangrene were retrospectively collected (2005–2011). Once the patients were stabilized following surgery, they were treated with either daily antiseptic (povidone iodine) dressings (group I, n = 6) or dressings with dakin's solution (sodium hypochloride) (group II, n = 8). Results. The mean age of the patients was 68.2 ± 7.8 (55–75) years in group I and 66.9 ± 10.2 (51–79) years in group II. Length of hospital stay was 13 ± 3.5 (7–16) days in group I and 8.9 ± 3.0 (4–12) days in group II (P < 0.05). The number and rate of mortality was 1/6 (16.7%) in group I, and 1/8 (12.5%) in group II. Conclusions. The hospitalization time can be reduced with the use of dakin's solution for the dressings in the treatment of FG. Also, dressings with dakin's solution seems to have favorable effects on morbidity and mortality. Consequently dakin's solution may alter the treatment of this disastrous disease by reducing cost, morbidity and mortality

    ABOUT SIMILAR FEATURES AND MOTIVES OF KARSKAĞIZMAN (TURKEY), GEMİKAYA (AZERBAIJAN), ULSAN (SOUTH KOREA) AND ALTA (NORWAY) ROCK PETROGLIFES

    On the spreading areas of the ancient Turks-paintings on rocks in large territories beginning from Anadolu up to Altay according to their composition and plot are similar to the paintings in Korea (Ulsan, Ulju, Andong, Haman) and Scandinavia. Paintings on rocks in Scandinavia (Alta, Komsa, Tennese and Saam) as well as in the Small Caucausus, (Zangezeur, Paragol, Zalkhagol, Perichingil and Gamigaya) can be divided into four groups due to the social, style of life, economy and hunting. Natural climatic conditions of the territories where Kars – Kağızman, Alta and Gamigaya rock paintings are located are very alike. Rock paintings in each galleries which are 6000 years old (4000-4200 B.C.) have protected from severe climate and lived up to our days. The description of the deer which is widely spread in Alta as well as the paintings describing the development of the family can be found in some places in Gamigaya. For Altay nations and ancient turks the deer descriptions can be found in the Altay mountains (Elengash, Kijil-kol, Kolpak-tash) as well as in East Anadolu, where the deer doesn’t exist, (Dereichi, Karabonjuk, Jamushlu), Small Caucausus mountains (Gamigaya), Korea (Ulsan). This fact shows that ancient turks lived in the above mentioned territories. Archaeological excavations in Scandinavia prove that in old times 95% of food used by the local people was sea food. Though paintings on rocks of different fishes, seals are widely spread everywhere, in compare with the descriptions of deer and goats, they almost can’t be found in Komsa which is situated on the seashore. All these facts prove that Altay nations, as well as ancient turks wondered up to the Norway Sea, inhabited there, became assimilated to the local people and migrated back. The famous traveler Tur Heyerdal analyzed the toponyms of places where Turkish speaking people lived and show definite relations and similarities between these people and Scandinavia ancient people. According to him it is necessary to search for the explanation of such toponyms in Norway like ‘’As”, ‘’Odin”, ‘’Tur”, ‘’Karashka” and so on. After all shown above, especially after scientific investigation of rock paintings we can come to the concrete conclusion that the authors of both Kars-Kağızman, Ulsan, Alta and Gemikaya petroglyphs have been the same or relative people or clans. We think that these rock paintings are the sign of Turkish speaking people who migrated from one end of Eurasia to another from time to time and their great gift to the spiritual treasury of mankid

    Cues disseminated by professional associations that represent 5 health care professions across 5 nations : lexical analysis of tweets

    Background: Collaboration across health care professions is critical in efficiently and effectively managing complex and chronic health conditions, yet interprofessional care does not happen automatically. Professional associations have a key role in setting a profession’s agenda, maintaining professional identity, and establishing priorities. The associations’ external communication is commonly undertaken through social media platforms, such as Twitter. Despite the valuable insights potentially available into professional associations through such communication, to date, their messaging has not been examined. Objective: This study aimed to identify the cues disseminated by professional associations that represent 5 health care professions spanning 5 nations. Methods: Using a back-iterative application programming interface methodology, public tweets were sourced from professional associations that represent 5 health care professions that have key roles in community-based health care: general practice, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and social work. Furthermore, the professional associations spanned Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. A lexical analysis was conducted of the tweets using Leximancer (Leximancer Pty Ltd) to clarify relationships within the discourse. Results: After completing a lexical analysis of 50,638 tweets, 7 key findings were identified. First, the discourse was largely devoid of references to interprofessional care. Second, there was no explicit discourse pertaining to physiotherapists. Third, although all the professions represented in this study support patients, discourse pertaining to general practitioners was most likely to be connected with that pertaining to patients. Fourth, tweets pertaining to pharmacists were most likely to be connected with discourse pertaining to latest and research. Fifth, tweets about social workers were unlikely to be connected with discourse pertaining to health or care. Sixth, notwithstanding a few exceptions, the findings across the different nations were generally similar, suggesting their generality. Seventh and last, tweets pertaining to physiotherapists were most likely to refer to discourse pertaining to profession. Conclusions: The findings indicate that health care professional associations do not use Twitter to disseminate cues that reinforce the importance of interprofessional care. Instead, they largely use this platform to emphasize what they individually deem to be important and advance the interests of their respective professions. Therefore, there is considerable opportunity for professional associations to assert how the profession they represent complements other health care professions and how the professionals they represent can enact interprofessional care for the benefit of patients and carers

    OXA-48-like carbapenemases in the UK: an analysis of isolates and cases from 2007 to 2014

    Objectives: OXA-48-like carbapenemases have spread worldwide since 2001. We analysed patient and microbiological data for UK isolates with these enzymes as confirmed by the national reference laboratory from November 2007 - December 2014.  Methods: MICs were determined using BSAC agar dilution. Isolates with reduced susceptibility or resistance to at least one carbapenem and high-level resistance to both piperacillin/tazobactam (MIC ≥ 64 mg/L) and temocillin (MICs ≥ 128 mg/L) were screened by PCR for blaOXA-48-like genes. The genomes of around half of the isolates were sequenced, with MLST types, resistance genes and plasmid replicon types inferred. Patient data provided by sending laboratories were reviewed.  Results: Isolates (n=741) with OXA-48-like carbapenemases were submitted from 111 UK laboratories, representing 536 patients. Almost all (99%; 736/741) were Enterobacteriaceae, predominantly Klebsiella pneumoniae (55%; 408), and most (80%; 595) were from inpatients. WGS of 351 non-duplicate isolates identified blaOXA-48 as the most common variant, found in two-thirds (235/351) of isolates, followed by blaOXA-181 (68), blaOXA-232 (32), blaOXA-244 (10), blaOXA-484 (5) and blaOXA-245 (1). Among K. pneumoniae (163/351), E.coli (114/351), and E. cloacae (42/351), 119 STs were identified. Mapping analyses revealed that 63% (222/351) of isolates harboured plasmids that shared >99% identity to one of four known plasmids; pOXA-48a (44%; 154/351), pOXA-232 (10%; 34/351), pOXA181 (9%; 30/351), and pKP3-A (1%; 4/351); the remaining 37% of isolates harboured blaOXA-48-like in unknown environments.  Conclusions: OXA-48-like carbapenemases are an increasing problem in the UK. This study highlights both the role of successful plasmids and polyclonal nature of their dissemination

    Edge on Wheels With OMNIBUS Networking for 6G Technology

    In recent years, both the scientific community and the industry have focused on moving computational resources with remote data centres from the centralized cloud to decentralised computing, making them closer to the source or the so called “edge” of the network. This is due to the fact that the cloud system alone cannot sufficiently support the huge demands of future networks with the massive growth of new, time-critical applications such as self-driving vehicles, Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality techniques, advanced robotics and critical remote control of smart Internet-of-Things applications. While decentralised edge computing will form the backbone of future heterogeneous networks, it still remains at its infancy stage. Currently, there is no comprehensive platform. In this article, we propose a novel decentralised edge architecture, a solution called OMNIBUS, which enables a continuous distribution of computational capacity for end-devices in different localities by exploiting moving vehicles as storage and computation resources. Scalability and adaptability are the main features that differentiate the proposed solution from existing edge computing models. The proposed solution has the potential to scale infinitely, which will lead to a significant increase in network speed. The OMNIBUS solution rests on developing two predictive models: (i) to learn timing and direction of vehicular movements to ascertain computational capacity for a given locale, and (ii) to introduce a theoretical framework for sequential to parallel conversion in learning, optimisation and caching under contingent circumstances due to vehicles in motion

    Sustained transmission of high-level azithromycin-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae in England: an observational study.

    BACKGROUND: Between Nov 3, 2014, and Feb 24, 2017, 70 cases of high-level azithromycin-resistant (HL-AziR; minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] ≥256 mg/L) Neisseria gonorrhoeae were reported from across England. Whole-genome sequencing was done to investigate this outbreak to determine whether the ongoing outbreak represented clonal spread of an HL-AziR N gonorrhoeae strain identified in Leeds. We also wanted to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of azithromycin resistance in N gonorrhoeae in the UK. METHODS: In this observational study, whole-genome sequencing was done on the HL-AziR N gonorrhoeae isolates from England. As comparators, 110 isolates from the UK and Ireland with a range of azithromycin MICs were also sequenced, including eight isolates from Scotland with azithromycin MICs ranging from 0·12 mg/L to 1·00 mg/L that were N gonorrhoeae multi-antigen sequence type 9768 (ST9768), which was the sequence type initially responsible for the outbreak. The presence of mutations or genes associated with azithromycin resistance was also investigated. FINDINGS: 37 of the 60 HL-AziR isolates from England belonged to ST9768, and were genetically similar (mean 4·3 single-nucleotide polymorphisms). A 2059A→G mutation was detected in three or all four alleles of the 23S rRNA gene. Five susceptible ST9768 isolates had one mutated 23S rRNA allele and one low-level resistant ST9768 isolate had two mutated alleles. INTERPRETATION: Sustained transmission of a successful HL-AziR clone was seen across England. Mutation 2059A→G was found in isolates with lower azithromycin MICs. Azithromycin exposure might have provided the selection pressure for one or two mutated copies of the 23S rRNA gene to recombine with wild-type copies, leading to three or four mutated copies and the HL-AziR phenotype. HL-AziR could emerge in isolates with low azithromycin MICs and eliminate the effectiveness of azithromycin as part of dual therapy for the treatment of gonorrhoea. FUNDING: Public Health England
