    Low Mass Group Environments have no Substantial Impact on the Circumgalactic Medium Metallicity

    We explore how environment affects the metallicity of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) using 13 low mass galaxy groups (2-5 galaxies) at zabs=0.25\langle z_{abs}\rangle=0.25 identified near background quasars. Using quasar spectra from HST/COS and from Keck/HIRES or VLT/UVES we measure column densities of, or determine limits on, CGM absorption lines. We use a Markov chain Monte Carlo approach with Cloudy to estimate metallicities of cool (T104T\sim10^4K) CGM gas within groups and compare them to CGM metallicities of 47 isolated galaxies. Both group and isolated CGM metallicities span a wide range (2<-2<[Si/H]<0<0), where the mean group (0.54±0.22-0.54\pm0.22) and isolated (0.77±0.14-0.77\pm0.14) CGM metallicities are similar. Group and isolated environments have similar distributions of {\HI} column densities as a function of impact parameter. However, contrary to isolated galaxies, we do not find an anti-correlation between {\HI} column density and the nearest group galaxy impact parameter. We additionally divided the groups by member luminosity ratios (i.e., galaxy-galaxy and galaxy-dwarf groups). While there was no significant difference in their mean metallicities, a modest increase in sample size should allow one to statistically identify a higher CGM metallicity in galaxy-dwarf groups compared to galaxy-galaxy groups. We conclude that either environmental effects have not played an important role in the metallicity of the CGM at this stage and expect that this may only occur when galaxies are strongly interacting or merging, or that some isolated galaxies have higher CGM metallicities due to past interactions. Physical Review Physics Education Research, 12(1), 16. doi:10.1103/PhysRevPhysEducRes.12.010122Computer-automated assessment of students' text responses to short-answer questions represents an important enabling technology for online learning environments. We have investigated the use of machine learning to train computer models capable of automatically classifying short-answer responses and assessed the results. Our investigations are part of a project to develop and test an interactive learning environment designed to help students learn introductory physics concepts. The system is designed around an interactive video tutoring interface. We have analyzed 9 with about 150 responses or less. We observe for 4 of the 9 automated assessment with interrater agreement of 70% or better with the human rater. This level of agreement may represent a baseline for practical utility in instruction and indicates that the method warrants further investigation for use in this type of application. Our results also suggest strategies that may be useful for writing activities and questions that are more appropriate for automated assessment. These strategies include building activities that have relatively few conceptually distinct ways of perceiving the physical behavior of relatively few physical objects. Further success in this direction may allow us to promote interactivity and better provide feedback in online learning systems. These capabilities could enable our system to function more like a real tutor

    Positive Surgical Margins in the 10 Most Common Solid Cancers.

    A positive surgical margin (PSM) following cancer resection oftentimes necessitates adjuvant treatments and carries significant financial and prognostic implications. We sought to compare PSM rates for the ten most common solid cancers in the United States, and to assess trends over time. Over 10 million patients were identified in the National Cancer Data Base from 1998-2012, and 6.5 million had surgical margin data. PSM rates were compared between two time periods, 1998-2002 and 2008-2012. PSM was positively correlated with tumor category and grade. Ovarian and prostate cancers had the highest PSM prevalence in women and men, respectively. The highest PSM rates for cancers affecting both genders were seen for oral cavity tumors. PSM rates for breast cancer and lung and bronchus cancer in both men and women declined over the study period. PSM increases were seen for bladder, colon and rectum, and kidney and renal pelvis cancers. This large-scale analysis appraises the magnitude of PSM in the United States in order to focus future efforts on improving oncologic surgical care with the goal of optimizing value and improving patient outcomes

    Relationship between the Metallicity of the Circumgalactic Medium and Galaxy Orientation

    We investigate the geometric distribution of gas metallicities in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) around 4747, z<0.7z<0.7 galaxies from the "Multiphase Galaxy Halos" Survey. Using a combination of quasar spectra from HST/COS and from Keck/HIRES or VLT/UVES we measure column densities of, or determine limits on, CGM absorption lines. We then use a Monte-Carlo Markov chain approach with Cloudy to estimate the metallicity of cool (T\sim10410^4K) CGM gas. We also use HST images to determine host galaxy inclination and quasar--galaxy azimuthal angles. Our sample spans a HI column density range of 13.813.8 cm s1<logNHI<19.9^{-1}<{\log N_{HI}}<19.9 cm s1^{-1}. We find (1) while the metallicity distribution appears bimodal, a Hartigan dip test cannot rule out a unimodal distribution (0.4σ0.4\sigma). (2) CGM metallicities are independent of halo mass, spanning three orders of magnitude at fixed halo mass. (3) The CGM metallicity does not depend on the galaxy azimuthal and inclination angles regardless of HI column density, impact parameter and galaxy color. (4) Ionization parameter does not depend on azimuthal angle. We suggest that the partial Lyman limit metallicity bimodality is not driven by a spatial azimuthal bimodality. Our results are consistent with simulations where the CGM is complex and outflowing, accreting, and recycled gas are well-homogenized at z<0.7z<0.7. The presence of low metallicity gas at all orientations suggests that cold streams of accreting filaments are not necessarily aligned with the galaxy plane at low redshifts or intergalactic transfer may dominate. Finally, our results support simulations showing that strong metal absorption can mask the presence of low metallicity gas in integrated line-of-sight CGM metallicities.Comment: 87 pages, 22 pages of main text, 65 pages of appendices, 106 figures and 50 tables.     Dotted crystallisation: nucleation accelerated, regulated, and guided by carbon dots

    Crystallisation from solution is an important process in pharmaceutical industries and is commonly used to purify active pharmaceutical ingredients. Crystallisation involves phase change and the mechanisms involved are random which makes the process stochastic. This creates a variation in the time required to reach a fixed percentage of yield from batch to batch. It is essential to regulate the batch crystallisation process and make it more predictable for industrial applications for the ease of process chain scheduling of upstream and downstream unit operations. In this work, we propose a new technique called dotted crystallisation, where carbon dots are used to dictate and regulate events associated with nucleation and crystallisation processes. Following the rules of two-step nucleation theory, the carbon dots intentionally added to a supersaturated solution of curcumin anchors the crystallising compound to form prenucleation clusters that evolve into stable nuclei. Using curcumin as a model compound, we showed that the nucleation of this compound in isopropanol can be regulated, and the nucleation rate can be improved via addition of small quantities of carbon dots to the supersaturated solution. Our results confirmed that the nucleation rate of curcumin by dotted crystallisation was roughly four times higher than the nucleation rate by conventional cooling crystallisation and produced smaller sized crystals with a narrow size distribution

    What Do Urban College Students Really Think about Health Insurance? A Qualitative Study

    Objective: To determine barriers and opportunities to health insurance enrollment among an undergraduate students at a large urban university. Participants: Participants were 31 college students enrolled in 4-year and community colleges in the City University of New York (CUNY), and six health services and insurance enrollment specialists who facilitate and assist in the health insurance enrollment process for CUNY students. Methods: Focus groups were conducted with students and in-depth interviews with key informants in May 2017. Results: The research revealed important insights into how students perceive and value insurance and yielded recommendations for the university to improve enrollment of its students. Conclusions: Many colleges can increase student enrollment in health insurance by informing and educating students about the process. Improving enrollment processes can increase insurance rates and improve student population health

    High Sensitivity Array Observations of the z=1.87 Sub-Millimeter Galaxy GOODS 850-3

    We present sensitive phase-referenced VLBI results on the radio continuum emission from the z=1.87 luminous submillimeter galaxy (SMG) GOODS 850-3. The observations were carried out at 1.4 GHz using the High Sensitivity Array (HSA). Our sensitive tapered VLBI image of GOODS 850-3 at 0.47 x 0.34 arcsec (3.9 x 2.9 kpc) resolution shows a marginally resolved continuum structure with a peak flux density of 148 \pm 38 uJy/beam, and a total flux density of 168 \pm 73 uJy, consistent with previous VLA and MERLIN measurements. The derived intrinsic brightness temperature is > 5 \pm 2 x 10^3 K. The radio continuum position of this galaxy coincides with a bright and extended near-infrared source that nearly disappears in the deep HST optical image, indicating a dusty source of nearly 9 kpc in diameter. No continuum emission is detected at the full VLBI resolution (13.2 x 7.2 mas, 111 x 61 pc), with a 4-sigma point source upper limit of 26 uJy/beam, or an upper limit to the intrinsic brightness temperature of 4.7 x 10^5 K. The extent of the observed continuum source at 1.4 GHz and the derived brightness temperature limits are consistent with the radio emission (and thus presumably the far-infrared emission) being powered by a major starburst in GOODS 850-3, with a star formation rate of ~2500 M_sun/yr. Moreover, the absence of any continuum emission at the full resolution of the VLBI observations indicates the lack of a compact radio AGN source in this z=1.87 SMG.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A

    Countermarketing campaigns use health communications to reduce the demand for unhealthy products by exposing motives and undermining marketing practices of producers. These campaigns can contribute to the prevention of noncommunicable diseases by denormalizing the marketing of tobacco, alcohol, and unhealthy food. By portraying these activities as outside the boundaries of civilized corporate behavior, countermarketing can reduce the demand for unhealthy products and lead to changes in industry marketing practices. Countermarketing blends consumer protection, media advocacy, and health education with the demand for corporate accountability. Countermarketing campaigns have been demonstrated to be an effective component of comprehensive tobacco control. This review describes commonelements of tobacco countermarketing such as describing adverse health consequences, appealing to negative emotions, highlighting industry manipulation of consumers, and engaging users in the design or implementation of campaigns. It then assesses the potential for using these elements to reduce consumption of alcohol and unhealthy foods
