AKARI/IRC Broadband Mid-infrared data as an indicator of Star Formation Rate

AKARI/Infrared Camera (IRC) Point Source Catalog provides a large amount of flux data at {\it S9W} (9 μm9\ {\rm \mu m}) and {\it L18W} (18 μm18\ {\rm \mu m}) bands. With the goal of constructing Star-Formation Rate(SFR) calculations using IRC data, we analyzed an IR selected GALEX-SDSS-2MASS-AKARI(IRC/Far-Infrared Surveyor) sample of 153 nearby galaxies. The far-infrared fluxes were obtained from AKARI diffuse maps to correct the underestimation for extended sources raised by the point-spread function photometry. SFRs of these galaxies were derived by the spectral energy distribution fitting program CIGALE. In spite of complicated features contained in these bands, both the {\it S9W} and {\it L18W} emission correlate with the SFR of galaxies. The SFR calibrations using {\it S9W} and {\it L18W} are presented for the first time. These calibrations agree well with previous works based on Spitzer data within the scatters, and should be applicable to dust-rich galaxies.Comment: PASJ, in pres

Duplex DNA from Sites of Helicase-Polymerase Uncoupling Links Non-B DNA Structure Formation to Replicative Stress

BACKGROUND: Replication impediments can produce helicase-polymerase uncoupling allowing lagging strand synthesis to continue for as much as 6 kb from the site of the impediment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed a cloning procedure designed to recover fragments from lagging strand near the helicase halt site. RESULTS: A total of 62% of clones from a p53-deficient tumor cell line (PC3) and 33% of the clones from a primary cell line (HPS-19I) were within 5 kb of a G-quadruplex forming sequence. Analyses of a RACK7 gene sequence, that was cloned multiple times from the PC3 line, revealed multiple deletions in region about 1 kb from the cloned region that was present in a non-B conformation. Sequences from the region formed G-quadruplex and i-motif structures under physiological conditions. CONCLUSION: Defects in components of non-B structure suppression systems (e.g. p53 helicase targeting) promote replication-linked damage selectively targeted to sequences prone to G-quadruplex and i-motif formation

The various power decays of the survival probability at long times for free quantum particle

The long time behaviour of the survival probability of initial state and its dependence on the initial states are considered, for the one dimensional free quantum particle. We derive the asymptotic expansion of the time evolution operator at long times, in terms of the integral operators. This enables us to obtain the asymptotic formula for the survival probability of the initial state ψ(x)\psi (x), which is assumed to decrease sufficiently rapidly at large x|x|. We then show that the behaviour of the survival probability at long times is determined by that of the initial state ψ\psi at zero momentum k=0k=0. Indeed, it is proved that the survival probability can exhibit the various power-decays like t2m1t^{-2m-1} for an arbitrary non-negative integers mm as tt \to \infty , corresponding to the initial states with the condition ψ^(k)=O(km)\hat{\psi} (k) = O(k^m) as k0k\to 0.Comment: 15 pages, to appear in J. High-Pressure Electrical Resistivity Measurements of EuFe2As2 Single Crystals

High-pressure electrical resistivity measurements up to 3.0GPa have been performed on EuFe2As2 single crystals with residual resistivity ratios RRR=7 and 15. At ambient pressure, a magnetic / structural transition related to FeAs-layers is observed at T0 =190K and 194K for samples with RRR=7 and 15, respectively. Application of hydrostatic pressure suppresses T0, and then induces similar superconducting behavior in the samples with different RRR values. However, the critical pressure 2.7GPa, where T0=0, for the samples with RRR=15 is slightly but distinctly larger than 2.5GPa for the samples with RRR=7.Comment: To be published in J. Phys.: Conf. Se

Measuring the brightness temperature distribution of extragalactic radio sources with space VLBI

    Get PDF
We have used VSOP space very long baseline interferometry observations to measure the brightness temperature distribution of a well-defined sub-set of the Pearson-Readhead sample of extragalactic radio sources. VLBI which is restricted to Earth-diameter baselines is not generally sensitive to emitting regions with brightness temperatures greater than approximately 101210^{12} K, coincidentally close to theoretical estimates of brightness temperature limits, 1011101210^{11} - 10^{12} K. We find that a significant proportion of our sample have brightness temperatures greater than 101210^{12} K; many have unresolved components on the longest baselines, and some remain completely unresolved. These observations begin to bridge the gap between the extended jets seen with ground-based VLBI and the microarcsecond structures inferred from intraday variability, evidenced here by the discovery of a relationship between intraday variability and VSOP-measured brightness temperature, likely due to the effects of relativistic beaming. Also, lower limits on jet Lorentz factors, estimated from space VLBI observations, are starting to challenge numerical simulations that predict low Lorentz factor jets.Comment: 4 pages + 1 figure, ApJ letters, accepte

Structure of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in two-dimensional superconductors

Nonuniform superconducting state due to strong spin magnetism is studied in two-dimensional type-II superconductors near the second order phase transition line between the normal and the superconducting states. The optimum spatial structure of the orderparameter is examined in systems with cylindrical symmetric Fermi surfaces. It is found that states with two-dimensional structures have lower free energies than the traditional one-dimensional solutions, at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. For s-wave pairing, triangular, square, hexagonal states are favored depending on the temperature, while square states are favored at low temperatures for d-wave pairing. In these states, orderparameters have two-dimensional structures such as square and triangular lattices.Comment: 11 pages (LaTeX, revtex.sty), 3 figures; added reference

    Multi-epoch VLBA observations of 3C 66A

We present the results of six-epoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of 3C~66A. The high-resolution Very Long Baseline Interferometer (VLBI) maps obtained at multi-frequency (2.3, 8.4, and 22.2 GHz) simultaneously enabled us to identify the brightest compact component with the core. We find that the spectrum of the core can be reasonably fitted by the synchrotron self-absorption model. Our VLBA maps show that the jet of 3C~66A has two bendings at about 1.2 and 4 mas from the core. We also give possible identifications of our jet components with the components in previous VLBA observations by analysing their proper motions. We find consistent differences of the position from the core in one component between different frequencies at six epochs.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, received 30 January 2007, accepted 22 March 200

B\"acklund Transformations of MKdV and Painlev\'e Equations

For N3N\ge 3 there are SNS_N and DND_N actions on the space of solutions of the first nontrivial equation in the SL(N)MKdVhierarchy, generalizingthetwoSL(N) MKdV hierarchy, generalizing the two Z_2$ actions on the space of solutions of the standard MKdV equation. These actions survive scaling reduction, and give rise to transformation groups for certain (systems of) ODEs, including the second, fourth and fifth Painlev\'e equations.Comment: 8 pages, plain te
