Variational Bayesian tracking: whole track convergence for large scale ecological video monitoring

fast alternative to numerical approximations for
Bayesian inference. We examine variational Bayesian methods
for filtering and smoothing continuous hidden Markov models,
in particular those with sharply-peaked, nonlinear observations
densities. We show that, by making variational updates in the
correct order, robust convergence to the tracked state may be
achieved.
We apply the whole track convergence algorithm to tracking
wild crickets in video streams and describe how animals may
be identified from the characteristics of their tracks. We also
show how identifying alphanumeric tags may be read under
poor lighting conditions

A combined high-pressure experimental and theoretical study of the electronic band-structure of scheelite-type AWO4 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb) compounds
The optical-absorption edge of single crystals of CaWO4, SrWO4, BaWO4, and
PbWO4 has been measured under high pressure up to ~20 GPa at room temperature.
From the measurements we have obtained the evolution of the band-gap energy
with pressure. We found a low-pressure range (up to 7-10 GPa) where
alkaline-earth tungstates present a very small Eg pressure dependence (-2.1 <
dEg/dP < 8.9 meV/GPa). In contrast, in the same pressure range, PbWO4 has a
pressure coefficient of -62 meV/GPa. The high-pressure range is characterized
in the four compounds by an abrupt decrease of Eg followed by changes in
dEg/dP. The band-gap collapse is larger than 1.2 eV in BaWO4. We also
calculated the electronic-band structures and their pressure evolution.
Calculations allow us to interpret experiments considering the different
electronic configuration of divalent metals. Changes in the pressure evolution
of Eg are correlated with the occurrence of pressure-induced phase transitions.
The band structures for the low- and high-pressure phases are also reported. No
metallization of any of the compounds is detected in experiments nor is
predicted by calculations.Comment: 26 pages, 1 table, 6 figure
Correlated optical, X-ray, and $-ray flaring activity seen with INTEGRAL during the 2015 outburst of V404 Cygni
Reproduced with permission from Astronomy & Astrophysics. © 2015 ESO.After 25 years of quiescence, the microquasar V404 Cyg entered a new period of activity in June 2015. This X-ray source is known to undergo extremely bright and variable outbursts seen at all wavelengths. It is therefore an object of prime interest to understand the accretion-ejection connections. These can, however, only be probed through simultaneous observations at several wavelengths. We made use of the INTEGRAL instruments to obtain long, almost uninterrupted observations from 2015 June 20th, 15:50 UTC to June 25th, 4:05 UTC, from the optical V-band, up to the soft γ-rays. V404 Cyg was extremely variable in all bands, with the detection of 18 flares with fluxes exceeding 6 Crab (20--40 keV) within 3 days. The flare recurrence can be as short as ∼ 20~min from peak to peak. A model-independent analysis shows that the >6 Crab flares have a hard spectrum. A simple 10--400 keV spectral analysis of the off-flare and flare periods shows that the variation in intensity is likely to be due to variations of a cut-off power law component only. The optical flares seem to be at least of two different types: one occurring in simultaneity with the X-ray flares, the other showing a delay greater than 10 min. The former could be associated with X-ray reprocessing by either an accretion disk or the companion star. We suggest that the latter are associated with plasma ejections that have also been seen in radio.Peer reviewe
