Spin asymmetries in jet-hyperon production at LHC
We consider polarized Lambda hyperon production in proton-proton scattering,
p p -> (\Lambda^\uparrow jet) jet X, in the kinematical region of the LHC
experiments, in particular the ALICE experiment. We present a new Lambda
polarization observable that arises from the Sivers effect in the fragmentation
process. It can be large even at midrapidity and therefore, is of interest for
high energy hadron collider experiments. Apart from its potential to shed light
on the mechanisms behind the phenomenon of Lambda polarization arising in
unpolarized hadronic collisions, the new observable in principle also allows to
test the possible color flow dependence of single spin asymmetries and the
(non)universality of transverse momentum dependent fragmentation functions.Comment: 11 pages, 10 eps figures; minor modifications, conclusions unchanged,

Transverse momentum dependent parton distributions in a light-cone quark model
The leading twist transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs)
are studied in a light-cone description of the nucleon where the Fock expansion
is truncated to consider only valence quarks. General analytic expressions are
derived in terms of the six amplitudes needed to describe the three-quark
sector of the nucleon light-cone wave function. Numerical calculations for the
T-even TMDs are presented in a light-cone constituent quark model, and the role
of the so-called pretzelosity is investigated to produce a nonspherical shape
of the nucleon.Comment: references added and typos corrected; version to appear in Phys. Rev.
A Resonant soft x-ray powder diffraction study to determine the orbital ordering in A-site ordered SmBaMn2O6
Soft X-ray resonant powder diffraction has been performed at the Mn L2,3
edges of A-site ordered SmBaMn2O6. The energy and polarization dependence of
the (1/2 1/2 0) reflection provide direct evidence for a (x2-z2)/(y2-z2) type
orbital ordering in contrast to the single layer manganite. The temperature
dependence of the reflection indicates an orbital reorientation transition at
210 K, below which the charge and orbital ordered MnO2 sheets show AAAA type of
stacking. The concurring reduction of the ferromagnetic super exchange
correlations leads to further charge localization
An interferometric study of the post-AGB binary 89 Herculis. II Radiative transfer models of the circumbinary disk
The presence of disks and outflows is widespread among post-AGB binaries. In
the first paper of this series, a surprisingly large fraction of optical light
was found to be resolved in the 89 Her post-AGB system. The data showed this
flux to arise from close to the central binary. Scattering off the inner rim of
the circumbinary disk, or in a dusty outflow were suggested as two possible
origins. With detailed dust radiative transfer models of the disk we aim to
discriminate between these two configurations. By including Herschel/SPIRE
photometry, we extend the SED such that it now fully covers UV to sub-mm
wavelengths. The MCMax radiative transfer code is used to create a large grid
of disk models. Our models include a self-consistent treatment of dust settling
as well as of scattering. A Si-rich composition with two additional opacity
sources, metallic Fe or amorphous C, are tested. The SED is fit together with
mid-IR (MIDI) visibilities as well as the optical and near-IR visibilities of
Paper I, to constrain the structure of the disk and in particular of its inner
rim. The near-IR visibility data require a smooth inner rim, here obtained with
a two-power-law parameterization of the radial surface density distribution. A
model can be found that fits all the IR photometric and interferometric data
well, with either of the two continuum opacity sources. Our best-fit passive
models are characterized by a significant amount of mm-sized grains, which are
settled to the midplane of the disk. Not a single disk model fits our data at
optical wavelengths though, the reason being the opposing constraints imposed
by the optical and near-IR interferometric data. A geometry in which a passive,
dusty, and puffed-up circumbinary disk is present, can reproduce all the IR but
not the optical observations of 89 Her. Another dusty, outflow or halo,
component therefore needs to be added to the system.Comment: 15 pages, in pres
Estimate of the Collins fragmentation function in a chiral invariant approach
We predict the features of the Collins function, which describes the
fragmentation of a transversely polarized quark into an unpolarized hadron, by
modeling the fragmentation process at a low energy scale. We use the chiral
invariant approach of Manohar and Georgi, where constituent quarks and
Goldstone bosons are considered as effective degrees of freedom in the
non-perturbative regime of QCD. To test the approach we calculate the
unpolarized fragmentation function and the transverse momentum distribution of
a produced hadron, both of which are described reasonably well. In the case of
semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, our estimate of the Collins function
in connection with the transversity distribution gives rise to a transverse
single spin asymmetry of the order of 10%, supporting the idea of measuring the
transversity distribution of the nucleon in this way. In the case of e+ e-
annihilation into two hadrons, our model predicts a Collins azimuthal asymmetry
of about 5%.Comment: 12 pages, 15 figures. Figs. 11-14 changed, minor changes in

Monte-Carlo simulation of events with Drell-Yan lepton pairs from antiproton-proton collisions
The complete knowledge of the nucleon spin structure at leading twist
requires also addressing the transverse spin distribution of quarks, or
transversity, which is yet unexplored because of its chiral-odd nature.
Transversity can be best extracted from single-spin asymmetries in fully
polarized Drell-Yan processes with antiprotons, where valence contributions are
involved anyway. Alternatively, in single-polarized Drell-Yan the transversity
happens convoluted with another chiral-odd function, which is likely to be
responsible for the well known (and yet unexplained) violation of the Lam-Tung
sum rule in the corresponding unpolarized cross section. We present Monte-Carlo
simulations for the unpolarized and single-polarized Drell-Yan at different center-of-mass energies in both
configurations where the antiproton beam hits a fixed proton target or it
collides on another proton beam. The goal is to estimate the minimum number of
events needed to extract the above chiral-odd distributions from future
measurements at the HESR ring at GSI. It is important to study the feasibility
of such experiments at HESR in order to demonstrate that interesting spin
physics can be explored already using unpolarized antiprotons.Comment: Deeply revised text with improved discussion of kinematics and

Sivers and Boer-Mulders functions in Light-Cone Quark Models
Results for the naive-time-reversal-odd quark distributions in a light-cone
quark model are presented. The final-state interaction effects are generated
via single-gluon exchange mechanism. The formalism of light-cone wave functions
is used to derive general expressions in terms of overlap of wave-function
amplitudes describing the different orbital angular momentum components of the
nucleon. In particular, the model predictions show a dominant contribution from
S- and P-wave interference in the Sivers function and a significant
contribution also from the interference of P and D waves in the Boer-Mulders
function. The favourable comparison with existing phenomenological
parametrizations motivates further applications to describe azimuthal
asymmetries in hadronic reactions.Comment: references and explanations added; version to appear in Phys. Rev.
Circularly polarized resonant soft x-ray diffraction study of helical magnetism in hexaferrite
Magnetic spiral structures can exhibit ferroelectric moments as recently
demonstrated in various multiferroic materials. In such cases the helicity of
the magnetic spiral is directly correlated with the direction of the
ferroelectric moment and measurement of the helicity of magnetic structures is
of current interest. Soft x-ray resonant diffraction is particularly
advantageous because it combines element selectivity with a large magnetic
cross-section. We calculate the polarization dependence of the resonant
magnetic x-ray cross-section (electric dipole transition) for the basal plane
magnetic spiral in hexaferrite Ba0.8Sr1.2Zn2Fe12O22 and deduce its domain
population using circular polarized incident radiation. We demonstrate there is
a direct correlation between the diffracted radiation and the helicity of the
magnetic spiral.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
