Firm-level political risk and dividend payout
We use a novel measure of firm-level political risk based on a textual search technique on firms\u27 quarterly earnings conference transcripts to explain dividend payouts in publicly listed U.S. firms. We find a positive and significant effect of firm-level political risk on dividend payouts, particularly in uncertainties related to economics, institutions, technology, trade, and security. The effect is more pronounced in firms with better corporate governance, less analyst follow-up, and higher growth opportunities. These results support the signaling role of dividends rather than the role of agency theory in explaining dividend payouts when firms are associated with higher levels of political risk. We also find the effect to be prominent after controlling for an aggregate measure of economic policy uncertainty and in poor economic conditions and in major political event periods. We address endogeneity concerns by running placebo tests and conducting instrumental variable analysis and we alleviate self-selection bias by performing propensity score matching technique
Increasing the Tire Life Span by Means of Water Cooling
The life of tires depends on the frequency of usage,
tire pressure level, weather and friction level between tire and road
surface. Heat and friction will increase the wear and tear of the tire
during long distance travel. Consequently, the life of the tire is
reduced. In order to reduce the heat on the surface of the moving tire,
a tire cooling system with water jet spray is designed and tested. The
amount of heat dissipated from the tire is determined based on the
reduction of the tire surface temperature after the water is spayed on
the tire. With the immediate availability of the system components,
the purpose of reducing the tire surface heat is achieved thus increase
the tire life span
3D Indoor Instance Segmentation in an Open-World
Existing 3D instance segmentation methods typically assume that all semantic
classes to be segmented would be available during training and only seen
categories are segmented at inference. We argue that such a closed-world
assumption is restrictive and explore for the first time 3D indoor instance
segmentation in an open-world setting, where the model is allowed to
distinguish a set of known classes as well as identify an unknown object as
unknown and then later incrementally learning the semantic category of the
unknown when the corresponding category labels are available. To this end, we
introduce an open-world 3D indoor instance segmentation method, where an
auto-labeling scheme is employed to produce pseudo-labels during training and
induce separation to separate known and unknown category labels. We further
improve the pseudo-labels quality at inference by adjusting the unknown class
probability based on the objectness score distribution. We also introduce
carefully curated open-world splits leveraging realistic scenarios based on
inherent object distribution, region-based indoor scene exploration and
randomness aspect of open-world classes. Extensive experiments reveal the
efficacy of the proposed contributions leading to promising open-world 3D
instance segmentation performance.Comment: Accepted at NeurIPS 202
In vitro and in silico screening analysis of artabotrys sumatranus leaf and twig extracts for α-glucosidase inhibition activity and its relationship with antioxidant activity
Artabotrys sumatranus is one of the Artabotrys species, which lives in Sumatera, Java, and Borneo in Indonesia. No research has been found related to its activity. The objective of this study was to explore the potential of A. sumatranus leaf and twig extracts as the source of an anti-diabetic agent through the α-glucosidase inhibition mechanism, as well as the relationship between the antioxidant and the α-glucosidase inhibition activities in these extracts. Ethanol extracts from leaf and twig A. sumatranus were subjected to several assays: total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, antioxidant activity using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), radical scavenging activity, and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) analysis, as well as α-glucosidase inhibition. Later,
GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometer) and LC-MS/MS (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer/mass spectrometer) analysis were conducted to identify the compounds inside the extracts. The identified compounds were tested for potential α-glucosidase inhibition activity using a molecular docking simulation. As a result, the A. sumatranus leaf extract showed more potential than the twig extract as α-glucosidase inhibitor and antioxidant agent. In addition, from the comparison between the measured quantities, it can be deduced that most of the α-glucosidase active compounds in the A. sumatranus are also antioxidant agents. Several active compounds with a high affinity to α-glucosidase inhibition were identified using the molecular docking simulation. It was concluded that A. sumatranus twig and leaf extracts seem to be potential sources of α-glucosidase inhibitors
Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy as a paraneoplastic manifestation of colorectal carcinoma: What do we know?
The pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory demyelinating
polyneuropathy (CIDP) remains highly debated among experts. In recent times,
literature has divulged a riveting yet plausible association between colorectal
carcinoma and CIDP as its paraneoplastic ramification. Initially, research
suggested that chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) was caused
solely by macrophages. However, recent studies have insinuated towards an
alternative pathogenesis, one involving autoantibodies against paranodal
junction proteins. These two distinct mechanisms are the primary contenders
responsible for the development of CIDP, rendering it an elusive paraneoplastic
manifestation of colorectal carcinoma.</p
