    MRS study of meningeal hemangiopericytoma and edema: A comparison with meningothelial meningioma

    Intracranial hemangiopericytomas (HPCs) are rare tumors and their radiological appearance resembles that of meningiomas, especially meningothelial meningiomas. To increase the knowledge on the biochemical composition of this type of tumor for better diagnosis and prognosis, we performed a molecular study using ex vivo high resolution magic angle spinning (HR-MAS) magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) perfomed on HPC and peritumoral edematous tissues. Moreover, to help in the discrimination between HPC and meningothelial meningioma we compared the ex vivo HR-MAS spectra of samples from one patient with HPC and 5 patients affected by meningothelial meningioma. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in vivo localized single voxel 1H-MRS was also performed on the same patients prior to surgery and the in vivo and ex vivo MRS spectra were compared. We observed the presence of OH-butyrate, together with glucose in HPC and a low amount of N-acetylaspartate in the edema, that may reflect neuronal alteration responsible for associated epilepsy. Many differences between HPC and meningothelial meningioma were identified. The relative ratios of myo-inositol, glucose and gluthatione with respect to glutamate are higher in HPC compared to meningioma; whereas the relative ratios of creatine, glutamine, alanine, glycine and choline-containing compounds with respect to glutamate are lower in HPC compared to meningioma. These data will be useful to improve the interpretation of in vivo MRS spectra resulting in a more accurate diagnosis of these rare tumors

    HR-MAS NMR spectroscopy in the characterization of human tissues: Application to healthy gastric mucosa

    The HR-MAS is an ideal technique for the investigation of intact tissue specimens (10-50 mg) and permits the obtainment of spectra with a resolution comparable to that observed in solution in a time that does not exceed a half of an hour for a routine analysis. The potentialities of HR-MAS NMR spectroscopy in the identification of the metabolites characterizing the healthy gastric mucosa are here presented. The direct 1D H-1 NMR spectra enables only few metabolites to be confidently assigned, and the use of selected 2D experiments strongly amplify the analytical effectiveness of the technique

    NEW SECONDARY METABOLITES IN THE AMPHINOMID FIREWORM HERMODICE CARUNCULATA

    Eight betaine-derived novel compounds were found in extracts of the Mediterranean stinging fireworm Hermodice carunculata. The identification of their structures relies on 1D and 2D NMR (Fig. 1-3) and HPLC-ESI/HRMS spectra. Two types of terminal ammonium portions A and B and a series of different alkyl chains were identified (Fig. 4a,b). Their matching provides the structures of uncharacterized secondary metabolites, named carunculines, and their related isomers. These molecules differ from already known trimethylammonium inflammatory compounds (i.e. complanines) isolated from another amphinomid species, for the structures of the terminal ammonium groups (Fig. 4c) [1]. Carunculine anatomical distribution within H. carunculata was assessed by screening through HPLC-ESI/HRMS (Fig. 5, Table 1): their occurrence was revealed in all the body parts analyzed, both involved in predator-prey interactions [2], and mainly in the digestive apparatus. The results achieved reveal an array of different novel compounds from a chemically unknown species, improving knowledge on Marine Animal Products with chemical and biological potential for bioprospection [3]. Overall, these data reinforce the necessity of studying poorly-investigated taxa to expand knowledge on animal venom biology, their mechanisms of action and exploitation as promising source of drug molecule

    Ex vivo HR-MAS Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy of human gastric adenocarcinomas: A comparison with healthy gastric mucosa

    The present study reports the characteristics of the biochemical profile of human gastric adenocarcinoma in comparison with that of healthy gastric mucosa, using ex vivo HR-MAS Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. Healthy human mucosa is mainly characterized by the presence of small metabolites (more than 50 identified) and macromolecules, whereas the adenocarcinoma spectra are dominated by the presence of signals due to triglycerides, whose content on the contrary is very low in healthy gastric mucosa. The use of spin-echo experiments enable us to detect some metabolites in the unhealthy tissues and to determine their variation with respect to the healthy ones. We have observed that the Cho:ChoCC ratio changes from 20:80 in the healthy tissues to 80:20 in the neoplastic gastric mucosa

    Mindfulness as a protective factor for dissatisfaction in HCWS: The moderating role of mindful attention between climate stress and job satisfaction

    With the aim of investigating the possible moderating effect of job control and dispositional mindfulness between different sources of organizational stress and job satisfaction, a correlational study was designed involving health care workers (HCWs). The following questionnaires were administered and completed by 237 HCWs: (1) Occupational Stress Indicator (OSI), to measure the sources of stress at work (managerial role, climate power, climate structure, internal relationships), and job satisfaction; (2) Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) to assess the individual's level of attention to what is taking place in the present; (3) Job Control Scale (JCS) to assess the perceived control at work. Hierarchical regression analyses were used to test the hypothesized relationships between variables; the results showed that, between the different sources of stress, the organizational climate dimension was negatively associated with job satisfaction; moreover, mindfulness attention moderated the relationship between climate stress and job satisfaction; unexpectedly, the interaction between job control and the organizational climate dimension was not significant in affecting job satisfaction. This study can provide useful information for Human Resources Management (HRM) practices regarding job and mental control interventions and empowerment, and possibly offer a new interpretation of the role of attention to what is happening in the present moment and autonomy between climate stressors and occupational satisfaction

    Migrant workers and psychological health: A systematic review

    Migrant workers show an increase in the incidence of serious, psychotic, anxiety, and post-traumatic disorders due to a series of socio-environmental variables, such as loss of social status, discrimination, and separations from the family. The purpose is to elaborate a systematic review and highlight the prevailing psychological pathologies of these workers and categories most at risk. Our research included articles published from 2009 to 2019 on the major databases (Pub Med, Cochrane Library, and Scopus) using a combination of some keywords. The online search indicated 1.228 references. Using inclusion and exclusion criteria, we analyzed 127 articles, in particular 12 reviews and 115 original articles. Principal emerging disorders from the research are depressive syndrome (poor concentration at work, feeling down, or anger and somatization), anxiety, alcohol or substance abuse, and poor sleep quality. This causes low life conditions, which is also due to marginalization from the social context and strenuous work; in fact, migrant workers may suffer verbal or physical abuse, and they are often employed in dangerous, unhealthy jobs. It is therefore essential to increase the role of occupational medicine and promote wellbeing for this vulnerable job categor

    Central pancreatectomy: comparison of results according to the type of anastomosis

    INTRODUCTION: The mild pancreatic tumors are more and more treated by central pancreatectomy (CP) in alternative with the widened pancreatectomies. Indeed, their morbidity is lesser but they are however burdened by a rate of important postoperative fistulas. The purpose of our study is to compare pancreatico-jejunal anastomosis and pancreatico-gastric anastomosis. METHODS: This work was realized in a bicentric retrospective way. Twenty-five CP were included and classified according to two groups according to the pancreatic anastomosis (group 1 for pancreatico-jejunal anastomosis and group 2 for the pancreatico-gastric anastomosis). CP was realized according to a protocol standardized in both centers and the complications were classified according to the classification of Clavien and Dindo and the fistulas according to the classification of Bassi. RESULTS: Both groups were comparable. The duration operating and the blood losses were equivalent in both groups. There was a significant difference (P=0,014) as regards the rate of fistula. The pancreatico-gastric anastomosis complicated more often of a low-grade fistula. However, in both groups, the treatment was mainly medical. Our results were comparable with those found in the literature and confirmed the advantages of the CP with regard to the cephalic duodeno-pancreatectomy (DPC) or to the distal pancreatectomy (DP). However, in the literature, a meta-analysis did not report difference between both types of anastomosis but this one concerned only the DPC. CONCLUSIONS: This work showed a less important incidence of low-grade fistula after pancreatico-jejunal anastomosis in the fall of a PM. This result should be confirmed by a later study on a more important sample of PM

    An elevated level of TSH might be predictive of differentiated thyroid cancer

    Suppression therapy of thyreostimulin (TSH) using thyroid hormones improves survival of subjects operated for differentiated thyroid cancer. The TSH level might be different depending on the type of nodule. The objective of this study was to compare retrospectively the TSH level between two groups of subjects who underwent total thyroidectomy for a nodule, matched on sex, ethnicity, age and biological method of TSH measurement, one whose final histology was benign and one malignant. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of age, sex, family history of thyroid disease or thyroid autoimmunity. The subjects, whose final histology was malignant, had a mean TSH level significantly higher than subjects with benign disease (1.55 mU/l versus 0.96 mU/l, P=0.003). Cancer risk was greater when the TSH was in the upper tertile of normal range. There was no correlation between the risk of thyroid cancer and age, sex, family history of thyroid disease, or menopausal status. The relative risk of having thyroid carcinoma was higher when the margins of nodules were blurred or in the presence of microcalcifications. These data confirm a trend toward baseline values of TSH higher in subjects with a thyroid-differentiated cancer. However, we could not define a preoperative threshold that would reliably determine the malignant or benign nature of the nodule

    Molecular characterization of human gastric mucosa by HR-MAS Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

    The present study was aimed at identifying themolecular profile characteristic of the healthy humangastric mucosa.Ex vivo HR-MAS magnetic resonance spectroscopy performed at 9.4 Tesla (400.13 MHz for 1H) on gastric specimens collected during endoscopy, permits the identification of more than forty species giving a detailed picture of the biochemical pattern of the gastric tissues. These preliminary data will be used for a comparison with gastric preneoplastic and neoplastic situations. Moreover, the full knowledge of the biochemical pattern of the healthy gastrictissues is the necessary presupposition for the application of magnetic resonance spectroscopy directly in vivo
